Sigma dp0 Quattro - The "mini" Medium Format
Вставка

- This is a camera that I have wanted to try for five years. More specifically, this is a SENSOR that I have wanted to try for five years.
If the five minute video is too long, here is the TLDR version;
This is essentially a medium format camera, which requires the careful use of a medium format camera, delivers the medium format results, but has a smaller-than-medium-format sensor.
How's that for magic?

I am having dp2 and dp3 quattro cameras. It is painful to get images when compared to other bayer sensor cameras, but the reward is fantastic image quality with tons of details. These series of quattro cameras are highly underrated, but are hidden gems.
I'm shooting landscape with DP2 merill and I cannot agree more. sharpness, tonality color reproduction is beyond fantastic.
Foveon colors look like film. Just stunning.
Great video. I ordered an SD Quattro from Japan and can’t wait to shoot with it. As a photographer that shoots mainly film, I wanted a digital camera that would help me shoot better night time shots without spending too much time and money developing and scanning. This seems like the closest a digital camera can get to actual film
You won't be disappointed. It's like shooting slide film
Peter Shayo I totally agree with you. Thanks for the reply
I shoot a ton of HP5 and I love the sigma cameras for the look and feel, I'm not saying it reminds me of HP5 but the process and feel of the digitals remind me of working with film... Just without the dev and scanning process lol
I’ve now had my SD Quattro for a few months now and the colors are amazing! The only bummer is the high ISO performance. I can’t shoot color above 200 ISO
@@red92diaz My use case is similar. I shoot mainly B+W film but I need a better solution for colour and "social" photography. (Colour film is too annoying to handle for me.) So, 3 years on, I am interested in what you think now about this camera. I am looking for an augmentation of my B+W film photography, not a replacement.
I have seen very nice prints in black and white coming from this camera, great tones and sharpness.
I'm a lucky owner of a DP2 and it's really a masterpiece that I did got for almost nothing
@Abdelkarim. Yes the images out of dp2 is unparalleled as for as I know. My dp2 quattro is giving images with unique look. These foveon sensor cameras are very slow but worth for IQ. The monochrome images are also gorgeous.
I owned all the DP Merrell series (DP1M, DP2M, and DP3M respectively) and do not like the Quattros Foveon Sensor nearly as much. I do love that DP0 though for its wide angle. I'd compromise to own it as I love the 21:9 ratio. The DP Merrells will always be my favorite for that full Foveon Sensor detail. The Quattros lost the even more detail due to making them a tad better for shooting in higher ISO, even though it isn't much of a range. Looking at 500 percent on a DP Merrell VS Quattro will show you that loss of detail. Still, it's better detail than many camera companies and at a smaller size. SPP was a royal pain to use as well. I did get a good work flow with it, but it is tediously slow. Once I convert the RAW though and bring into Photoshop, it was fine. The Merrell files brought into SPP to make Monochrome files are the best monochrome files I've ever seen besides from film. Nothing compares. Nothing.
I’ve REALLY wanted to get my hands on a Merrill. I’ve net even seen one in person...
I've been interested in that one for a while
Get one and enjoy!
Loving these photos! Are they SOOC or edited? Getting really close to purchasing one!
Nice review, I’ll buy this camera off you for $300, you come out ahead over the years. The dp0 has the larger footprint over the other models, dp1 and dp2 is a bit more compact.
Rumor has it , he's still up there. 😂
What?
Have you tried cropping your images to 3:1
I'm thinking of the dp0 as an alternative to panoramic field cameras
I have the dp 3 this one much different in sensor . ? Have you tried the viewfinder? Worth getting the vf . $300 is a steal
I have a DP2 and DP3 as well as SD Quattro and Quattro H... darn you for making want to get DP0 now lol
Nice review and fantastic photos. I do love these cameras and sensors 👍
I’m jealous of your Quattro H... they are incredibly hard to find, here, and I’ve wanted one for awhile
It's amazing, the quality is just unreal. I bought the 105 1.4 to use it for portraits... So good! Heavy as all get out to be completely honest, but worth it. I also use that lens on my Sony A7R3 with the mc-11 adapter... Works perfectly
To me, Sigma/Foveon cameras really are for the “medium format” shooter. Someone who doesn’t mind (or even enjoys) slowing down and setting up for a great shot. I’ve looked over so many DNG files from the Quattro H and the quality just blows my mind.
@@SkylerKing As long as you keep the lighting in check and ISO at 800 and/or below you'll be rewarded! I used to shoot pentax 645D's and the files very much remind me of those... It was a CCD but that and the sigma's have very organic and natural looking files. I just love them and similar to the 645D, I perpetually get asked "what is that" when I shoot with it lol
You sound really Rich.
$300! What a deal.
A polarizer filter should help to control to much lightness and color rendering
Foevon works best in soft light
Unfortunately the merril was horribly slow and a flux defect.
What are your thoughts on it's use for digitizing slides and old B&W prints? Seems like it could do some amazing macro shots.
I think that it would likely do a better job than any other digital camera. Because of the unique sensor, it’s ability to distinguish and replicate various colors is unmatched. The same sensor design also lends itself to incredibly detailed photos. One of the things I hear most often is that the files look “too sharp” and people will actually remove detail & sharpness in post processing.
@@SkylerKing because of dp's fixed focal length. In your opinion, which model would be the most flexible? If I were to take the old "film" approach, it seems like the dp3 with the 50mm makes sense. Although, I found myself using my 45mm medium format m645 more than it's standard 80mm for either landscape or portrait.
BTW, you created a very good honest review. Thanks!
Dennis Baker because you would be digitizing a pre-existing photo, in which all the various parameters were already set, I don’t think the focal length would be nearly as crucial. However, for the sake of simplicity, I would say that something close to a 50mm would likely be best. However, minimum focus distance on the lens may end up being a factor worth considering.
@@SkylerKing I actually use a DP3m to digitize my prints and slides, because of its macro lens. I make reverse processed b&w paper positives with an 11x14" large format camera, and I don't think that there is a camera around (may be with the exception of the Leica M Monochrome) which could produce better digitalised versions of those pics.
@@Dahrenhorstreversed black and white prints ? What is that ?
Where you got it for that crazy price?
Locally, here in Taiwan.
@@SkylerKing you are so lucky!
I have the SD Quattro since years and just now put on a cart but for 450 euro, it's offer, the dp0.
Your is mint!
I have owned the original DP1, DP2m, DP3m and still have my DP0Q, they're all good in its own unique way. I felt the DP3m produced the sharpest IQ, and DP0Q colour handling was much better then the Merrills. The original DP1 was a beautiful camera to hold and produced amazing images in right conditions and it was truly pocketable. I sold my DP2 and DP3 about a year ago to MPB Photographic in UK in exchange for Fuji XT3.
Just like medium format photography. More effort, but worth it.
I disagree, raw is overrated, the jpgs look fine too
You printed from it yet?
I'm waiting for my print shop to reopen (it's currently closed for Chinese New Year).
I've printed from my Merrells and they have SO much detail and tonal range.
I'm a UK brand ambassador for Sigma and have been photographing with Foveon cameras since 2004 with the SD9. In my opinion Foveon is digital photography's best kept secret and I can totally concur with Skyler King. I'm a landscape photographer and specialise in shooting square format with Foveon specifically using the dp0 Quattro and SD Quattro H. Both are wonderful cameras and can produce files that are up there with medium format film and the prints are just gorgeous. www.leatippett.com
The Quattro H is a bucketlist camera for me. I dream of being able to use one, some day.
How about the SD Quattro is that one any good? Or the DP3 I’m looking into those
Tell them to have me as ambassador too.👍
@@sciamachystandard3676SD is great more flexibility. Plus infrared
USD300 for that setup was an INSANE bargain, a regular STEAL. You should be ashamed of yourself. ;)
😂 ashamed?
Are you interested in selling?
As mentioned in this very video, I sold it already.
@@SkylerKing Not trying to be a hater but you do not actually say you sold it at any point in this vid :)
Really? Damn, could have sworn I did. My bad.
@@SkylerKing I managed to buy one from a really nice guy who was doing UA-cam videos. I’m going to tel you guys this camera is a game changer, I use it to take landscape photos and it reminds me of my days using Medium format cameras and large format because everything is slowed down due to the ISO restrictions
