Hi Barry, on drums and bass you used Pink 1, on Vocals you used Pink 4. Is not just the GUI, look at the name also. I know this plugin verry well and I saw your answers to the other comments, but it's not Pink 4. Only on vocals you used Pink 4.
To avoid the audio glitch when bypassing UAD plugins, always use the power button on the plugins gui rather than the daw window bypass button.

I’ve worked with a lot of actual API 500 series modules over the years, and to my ears, the UAD sounds a lot closer to real API hardware than the Acoustica Audio Pink does.
API is known for its “aggressive” character, so much so that, over the years, that’s sorta become their main signature; with an inherent pronounced and “forward” presence, particularly in the upper mids and highs. That character is what makes API so desirable for things like snare, brass, guitars and vocals…
Acoustica Audio’s version - while still sounding really nice - is quite a bit “smoother” (to me) in the upper mids and highs, and in that regard, I think it sounds a lot less like an actual API, and a lot closer to the smoother, warmer mids that you’d find in channel strips from Trident, or perhaps Harrison.
I’m NOT saying that I think the Acoustica Audio version sounds bad - not at all, as it has a really smooth and “polished” sound, but those things are not really the sonic signature that’s typical of what API is known for.
The only other thing that might be worth mentioning, is that (in my past experience), Acoustica Audio plugs have always been pretty hard on the CPU, and on some systems, I could see where it might be difficult to insert more than just a half dozen or so of their plugs…(although with track freezing, that’s not a deal breaker, as long as one is willing to commit to the sound of the tracks)…
Anyhooo, I think the UAD is far more accurate to the sound of API hardware, or at least it sounds that way in this video’s comparison.

Great video Barry! Both companies are on the top. I'm a acustica user because I never liked the Uad dsp model, it is a pricy dongle. Yes, acustica are cpu intensive, but my i7 9700k can handle quiet a lot with reaper, that now that you are talking about performance is the only daw that uses 100% cpu (I tested all of them before switching), and nobody seem to care about the multicore performance of a daw. For future videos with acustica I recommend to switch on the preamps or pres cause that is also part of the sound and mojo, and gain staging to -18db is strongly suggested, they don't saturate like algorithmic ones.
So on the drums example you have the UAD Api Vision set to NEW (Feedforward compression) and the Pink 1 (or 2, that definitely doesn't look like Pink 4) on feedback compression and you have a hard knee on the UAD Vision, but you have a soft knee on Pink 1. I also see Infinite ratio on the UAD Vision and 4:1 on Pink 1. Yeah, they definitely sound different alright.

hi Barry love the channel , you should update to PINK4 ( what you are in looks like the original PINK without any of the EQ and preamp models that were added in later version ) which includes many options for different API eqs ! CORRECTION ! as kept watching saw you use PINK 4 later in the video . perfer the PINK in general but , the UAD wins on the Bass to my ears .
Freeze and commit are your friends when it comes to Acustica! Not to mention their stuff just keeps getting better!
@15:00 "these plugins are resource hogs". With a MBP M1 Pro chipped machine...are we still dependent on dsp based systems like UA, etc ? Can we confidently ditch dsp hardware? Thanks.
I’ve got several videos that deal with the rub that subject. Go to mic channel and search for DSP. I have strong feelings about it. Acustica plugins are extraordinarily processor heavy though.

My take: On vocals, the Acustica Audio had a lot more depth and natural vocal character. On the others, Acustica Audio for this track; but UAD for lots of harder hitting contexts.

Wise move regarding Studio One, I started using it on version 4 and I'm staying, also use Reaper for certain things.
Agree with you, Avid tactics are out of control and that's why I never choose Pro-Tools.
I went the Ensoniq Paris route back in the day and headed back in that direction!!

I meant to say the top end sounds more tamed in the acoustic audio just giving you better over all Harmonic Balance…UAD plug ins in general handle. Transients very rough, which really throws off to EQqueuing of the mix.
I recognise that singer’s voice! (Or at least I think I do.). He’s been on Warren’s channel (PLAP). I feel like his name is Steve Magori? If I got that right Iill be impressed. I’ve only seen him once or twice but his voice stands out to me. All this considering I’m correct.. lol.

@@CharLessMajor7Music i was so close with his name too! I looked it up and it’s Steve Maggiora.. I guess with all this attention I’ve given him I should go check out some of his music. I did notice him labeled as New Age” when I just looked up his name a minute ago. I hope that means something different than what I remember from being a kid in the he 90s. Back then it was synonymous with elevator music, fake gurus and alternative medicine made primarily from sugar pills. But I did furtively listen to Enya back then so it wasn’t all a sham..

That might be a very early version of Pink. Doesn't look like Pink 4 GUI, unless it's an alternate skin.

@@BarryJohns Definitely NOT Pink 4. I think when you buy AA plugins you get all the older versions as well.
Interesting video - thank you. The gui for the AA plugin is for the original Pink, and not AA's latest version. This is significant as AA really revises with each iteration of their software. Perhaps do another video with AA's latest version? The version of Pink you are using is from years ago, whereas the UA version is the latest from UA.
i prefer the UAD version over Acoustica´s :-)
All modern plugins work fine and I used all the glorified hardware effects and mics and tape machines since 1972. I'm 70 years old and love my DAW system. The last console I owned was a 32 input API Legacy with (28) 550L eq's. Unless you're doing huge input sessions it's no longer needed. Pick a plugin brand and make music. AB comparisons today are just splitting hairs. Two great engineers I know think API and Neve are the worst sounding consoles there is because they want to reproduce a true sound and when you got a board full of transformers it's gonna alter the sound with distortion. The stock plugins in most DAWs are more than capable of making great recordings.
Ha Ha!!!! My experience as well.
Could always hear how the recording altered the input (blurred transients & bloated low freqs ) and were always trying anything to fix it. Dolby A, mixing to DAT, tracking only on a bounced copy to preserve the top end for mixing with original reel, etc.....!?!?
Then came SSL..... WOW!!! Crisp EQs, comp on every channe!, Total Recall !!

It’s like the UAD…. It’s pushing up more high mid… to make you think it’s more open but acoustic audio definitely has more dimension from the mid low to low and tames… the top anymore just making it sound more balanced as well that’s how you want to mix the sound you don’t want nothing, jumping all out out of balance, UAD is a rip off

But the other two together, give you much more of a real Analog, and full of sound, and even punchier

@@BarryJohns @Barry Johns Studio Talk it's not pink 4 for most of the video, it's pink 1, a less refined version. You only start to use pink 4 on the vocals at around 12 minutes

Barry, thank you for doing this. I quit Avid for Studio One back in 2015 for the very same reasons you complain about. Now, I want the API Vision Console Emulation in Studio One, but it is not available this way yet. I am hoping that by the end of 2022, UAD will both open this Vision Console Emulation to other DAWs as well as make it Apple Silicon Native. Walled Gardens suck!!! As for this test between the two, the UAD has more 'punchiness' which is why we want the API. By 'punchiness' I mean more 'air' and more mid-range clarity. The Pink sounds/feels more tame and 'smaller' in a murky way. API is for the Rhythm section. Neve is for vocals. For guitars (depending upon the type and application), Helios! And API! And Neve!

and Plugin Alliance....way better Ideas than overhyped UAD

Barry, Acustica Audio...blows UAD away....UAD might be ONE of the best Algorythim, plugins...4th...to Analog Obessesion, Softube, and Plugin Allinace....but......AA is live samples from an "Actual $500,000 API board...LOL...no way UAD even had a chance.....
