    Awesome work, I didn't realize on a double nymph rig that it's pretty common to use a stone fly as the top fly. I tried a Bead Head Pheasant Tail above a hares ear and didn't have much luck.

      Thanks! It all depends what they want to bite that day. I mostly use a stone fly as the lead fly to help get the whole rig down fast. If I dont need that much weight i'll go to a smaller tungsten fly

    Love your channel, but I simply have to ask you given the sheer size of some of the fish you’ve been landing, why not have a fighting but cap on the end of your rod to make reeling them in a little easier for you? You can purchase a package of three for only $6.95 at the Mad River Outfitters website (and not to worry cause I’m not on their payroll). Just thinking about making things a little easier for you is all. 😇

  • @FlyTyer1948
    @FlyTyer1948 3 роки тому +2

    I disagree with the gentleman who said you are giving away spots. You usually don’t get very specific unless the places are generally quite well known. Grand Lake Stream is hardly a secret, & it’s heavily stocked.
    If you ever get to the West Branch above Millinockett, stoneflies work quite well, along with caddis for subsurface, as well as the dry version.
    Friendly correction, you were standing on a beaver lodge (house). A dam would go completely across the stream &. block the flow.
    Be well.
    Stoneflies work

    • @MainelyOutDoors
      @MainelyOutDoors  3 роки тому

      I disagree too but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I do get his point of view, but every state needs places where new people can go learn and GLS is definitely no secret. As for all the other spots with native fish, I leave that up to everyone to find on their own. In the end that's part of the fun.
      Thanks for the tip I'm going to try to make it out that way more this year but we'll see. I'm trying to learn GLS like the back of my hand this year before becoming a guide
      😂 yes, I'm not sure why I kept calling it that I noticed it when I was editing.

    in all seriousness, why do you feel the need to broadcast our fishing spots? what do you gain from it? i enjoy your videos but i just dont understand why youd risk spoiling our gems. ive seen the increase in pressure over the years and ive also seen the direct affect on the fish. theres already enough pressure on these fish, the last thing we neeed is more. maybe you should consider just saying a general location, like eastern maine, or western maine...

    • @MainelyOutDoors
      @MainelyOutDoors  3 роки тому +8

      I never give away spots to places that are not well known. Grand Lake Stream is a heavily stocked fishery that gets a majority of its revenue from people coming to fish it. Highlighting these areas can benefit Maine. Whether you like it or not places like grand Lake Stream or the east outlet are Maine’s sacrificial lambs that anyone will tell you you should fish if you walk into a fly shop and ask where to fish Maine. This is why I mentioned these spots. However, like in the video before I was on a native brook trout stream that also had native Atlantic salmon and I would never give away that spot.

    • @newmoon984331
      @newmoon984331 3 роки тому +2

      @@MainelyOutDoors dont forget about the people who've fished these places their entire life but now can barely find a place to wet their line on certain days. well known is exactly right, too well known. the sacrificial lamb is only so big, why do you feel the need to give my share away? let the people walk into the fly shop and get their info, its not up to you to play god. when you put too many people into a certain spot, some will be forced to find a different place to fish, you know what that does? it puts more pressure on those little places that have native salmon and brookies. youre putting more pressure on a sensitive fishery and ignoring the repercussions. wether or not you see can see it, by sharing your location, you're having an indirect effect on all of the fishing in that area. i enjoy your videos and admire the fact that you're out there, making good content, and sharing it with us that are too busy to get out there to fish as often as we'd like. other than you selling a few flies on your website, i dont see how broadcasting this location is beneficial.

    • @newmoon984331
      @newmoon984331 3 роки тому +1

      @@MainelyOutDoors i'll give you the perfect example. i was in this same location at the end of april when the fish were just starting to move into the rivers. i fished there 2 out of the 3 days i was supposed to, one of the days, there was double the capacity at all of the holes that hold fish that early in the season and no place for me to go (half were from another state). where do you think i was forced to go? i was pushed into a small stream with native fish. eventually, people will be making videos in these places. i just hope you can see the risks you're taking and reconsider.

      @@newmoon984331 Do you honestly believe that his videos are going to change how many people go to GLS to fish? This is a well known fishery world wide that guides in the area promote. What he is doing could very well bring others to the area, hire a guide and bring money into an area that does not have a large economy.

    • @jesseh1800
      @jesseh1800 3 роки тому +1

      @@newmoon984331 there are numerous websites and blogs on the internet with significantly more detailed info on these “secret” spots that have been available for years, UA-cam videos like this one are not the problem. A simple google search of “where to fly fish in Maine” will give you detailed stream and hole locations, times of the year to fish them and patterns to use. The info is out there on the popular spots mentioned like GLS and the EO and the experience fishing them is no longer like that of the old days you’re referring to, that’s just the reality of the times.
