  • After talking about Riesling before I now need to talk about the other great white variety. The number one shapeshifter and terroir transporter: Chardonnay!
    It is the most widely planted white grape variety in the world after Airen - and Airen is also used for Brandy rather than wine. So you could argue that it is most widely planted white grape variety used for winemaking.

    I am a “Wine ambassador” at a winery in California and I am in love with you. My guests love that I lay out the truth to them about wine in easy to understand terms while questioning things at every turn. and I am thrilled to find you as I feel you do the same. Thank you for information that I will attempt to pass along to California wine lovers.

    Still flying under the radar: Chardonnay from the Jura, especially the Sud-Revermont. Producers like Labet, Ganevat, Courbet and Buronfosse should be on every Chardonnay lover's list.

    When first learning about wine generally, the wine that taught me my most serious lesson was a Californian 1998 Fetzer Barrel Select Chardonnay. I recall seeing either Russian River and/or Mendocino County on the label. Instantly I knew what 'oaked' meant. £8 a bottle (a lot for me then), I've never tasted a wine with so much impact since. So I have tried a few since, within my humble budget, from Ca and Hunters but never recovered that wonderful moment. In my search however, Jerome from Calais introduced me to and encouraged me to try Les Setilles (Olivier Leflaive) which was then about £9 and a new chapter began which is happily bankrupting me! (hee hee!)

    I got to try and purchase a half bottle of a late harvest Long Island chardonnay, the color of motor oil, very viscous, sweet and raisiny. It was memorable. Perhaps not very refined, but memorable nonetheless.

    We have a lot of lovely Burgundian Chards in the cellar but our mid-week go to, especially in Canadian winter, is Le Clos Jordanne, from the bench region in Niagara On The Lake area in Ontario; by Chard master Thomas bachelder 9who also has holdings in Burgundy!

    While I have had some incredible Burgundian chardonnays and have a special puligny montrachet waiting for me in my cellar, the best chardonnay I have had was a Cullen Kevin John from Australia. Australians tend to shy away from patriotism when it comes to culture, but I have to reluctantly say that this was better than anything else I have had.

      I live and work in Gold Coast, Queensland and I have this amazing Chardonnay on list at the restaurant where I work. Unfortunately it's not easy to obtain here in the subtropical Australia, but I had a chance to taste once the 2011 and 2016. Rich and structured but the acidity is always lively.
      Australia has still many things to learn from Europe, but some producers are amazing.
      Especially the ones with german and scandinavian backgrounds with the passion, seriousness ,scrupulosity typical of those populations, that I truly respect.
      PS: I'm Italian so I'm not biased 🙂

    When I started to drink more white wine, I was desperately searching for a good affordable Chardonnay and I have almost given up (remembering the Leflaive Wines I enjoyed at my father's home). Eventually, I found the Napa Valley Chardonnay from Black Stallion for around €20. I am very happy with it.

    Nice video, thanks. In Zagersdorf, Burgenland (Austria), a burial mound from 700 BCE had an urn within and seeds inside the urn were identical to chardonnay seeds.

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  3 роки тому

      Very interesting! So how did the seeds get there?

    • @duncansalmon5718
      @duncansalmon5718 3 роки тому

      @@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine The urn apparently contained wine, and a few seeds remained in the bottom. There is some suggestion that chardonnay may have moved from Austria to France with the monks.

    Thanks for a really entertaining video again. My best Chadonnay by now was the "Würzburger Stein Chardonnay - R - 2015" from the Bürgerspital winery in Franconia. I also had some French ones and a few from California aswell but non of them was better (although I have to say I never drank some of these really expensive "icon Chardonnays" so far). Still have a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay in my cellar, but did not open it by now so maybe I'd like it even more but I don't know.

    I love a chardonnay from a small winery in Missouri named Riverwood. It is definitely their best wine, but I don't think they know that. It has notes of apple, butter, and minerals with a really nice body. I wish there was a way I could help the winery promote their chardonnay

    You had a bottle of Dry River in your screen shot for this video.... but then you never mentioned New Zealand? I’m sure our good stuff isn’t easily accessible to people on the other side of the world, that’s a shame! I think you need to come visit some day :) Pretty sure Jancis described NZ as THE CHARDONNAY COUNTRY.... maybe because it’s a varietal that is produced at very high quality from one end of the country to the other.. encompassing every type of climate and style. So for a Chardonnay lover it would be one hell of a holiday!! Although if we could travel I would be off to Burgundy... or somewhere closer like Margaret a River in Australia! Isn’t wine great :) Cheers Konstantinos 🍷

    The best I ever had was Giaconda Estate Chardonnay... better than all the best GC in Burgundy I ever tasted, but other than that ... my favs are around Meursault most of the time, and some Puligny :) recently the SB County were a good surprise, but still they follow the reduction, lees and sort of Auvenay/CD style which every white wine producer seems to be trying to do like in every appellation in the world... hopefully there are rieslings :)
