I did a brief stint in flight ops at RAF Gibraltar in 2000. I remember being given a tour of the tunnels by some signals folks. What a place it was! A time capsule. There was a cannon position hewn into the rock that had graffiti from the 1700s and which still looked as fresh as yesterday. There was a ww2 hospital built into a damp fissure no more than 3ft wide in places. There was a ship's engine in there for power. So much history compressed into that little rock. It was humbling for a hungover airman (long traditions and all that).

To the author: Gibraltar is a port and castle, whose use (only its use) and enjoyment (the port and its buildings) is ceded to the UK after the Treaty of Utrecht by Spain. That is to say outdated.
Neither the alienation of more territory, nor its expansion, nor control of waters or airspace, nor the construction of an airport, nor as a base for piracy, slave trade in the Peninsula, headquarters of fictitious companies, is contemplated. , a tax paradise, a center for mercenary companies and other prohibited activities such as smuggling and trafficking in people and drugs. Nor the granting of their own status to its inhabitants.
That is, neither jurisdiction nor the border is ceded, which leaves trade with Spain restricted except in case of emergency.
Furthermore, Spain reserved in the Treaty the right to redeem (recover) the colony if these points were exceeded and this has been done.
It is also declared by the UN as the only European territory pending decolonization.
      That's Gibraltar.

I was on Gibraltar a few years ago and consider it to be a horrible place.
My wife and I walked to a high point on the cliffs and were disgusted to see that rubbish was thrown over the edge.
It certainly wasn't just bits and pieces but looked like a major rubbish dump.
Down below we could see what looked like a major dump with masses of discarded rubbish, including mattresses and discarded furniture.
All down the face of the cliff was streaks of what appeared to be a mix of oils and paint.
We left and vowed to never return.

The Spaniards are not very happy about UK's ownership of Gib, obviously...
In 2000/01 my partner and I were on a road trip from Madrid heading south.
We rented a car and bought a road atlas (paper and CD). Two-three days into the trip, we discovered that, on the paper version, the detailed map covering the south of Spain was "missing" Gib altogether, in its place just blue sea!!! Later on we checked the CD and discovered that it hadn't been edited out on that version, Gib was there in all its glory and details. Go figure!!
We did go on and visit the place after all, it's very nice!
The other funny bit was stopping and waiting at the red traffic light for a landing jumbo jet... amazing!

It literally isnt the same, Ceuta and Melilla always were spanish/portuguese enclaves without any treaties or documents saying otherwise. @@walkerahl Thats the point I made, Morroco wants cause its contiguous with their territory, not caring for any historical or further reasons. Your welcome!

      @roflomaozedong Рік тому +2

@@cirodelatorrerojo3643 I think the meaningful reason was its sucessful siege against spain and france against uk/portugal. Without it , it could be a chance gibraltar could be spanish one day but it will NEVER happen now. sorry lol it is our fault (french). After the siege, the territory earned its british identity until ... english people disappear from earth? If the spanish/french won the siege, gibraltar would be spanish today.

Kilometre squared is NOT the same as square kilometre. Km square is not a proper metric for area, it’s a an indicative measure that can help visualize size, but is not a proper metric.

The story of Jabal Al Tariq ( The mountain of Tariq) anglicised to Gibraltar starts before the British.
It was the Muslim general Tariq bin Zaiyad who burnt his boats at Jabal Al Tariq ( Hence the phrase to burn your boat), so that his would fight to the end and thus conquered this land and the whole of Spain and the Muslims ruled for over 800 years before the Spanish Inquisition.
So please, credit where it’s due.
