A video interview with the developers of the new JSR was shown on the official Sega channel (Japan), and there was an announcement that the development phase is still in less than prototype progress and that they are currently looking for volunteer developers from around the world. I don’t get any complaint about Crazy Taxi yet. Crazy Taxi was never cartoony aside from the 2D art of characters having an anime look. We haven’t even seen a up close look of any characters yet so I think Crazy Taxi looks pretty good so far.

No matter the visual aspect / Artstyle, I hope what won't go done the drain is the immaculate vibe inspired by HipHop and the Designer Republic Y2K design. Music is at the core of the experience, and currently there is a whole wave of artists reviving breakbeat, this is not to be missed. Hope they will be true to the initial spirit.
To be honest, all fans know that cell shading was the graphic identity of the saga, but these new kind of grapichs, even that they're WIP, look so fucking clean, so fresh and adding that the original creators are working again on it, it creates a huge amount of hype to play this new game of JSR. The only thing that i kinda dislike is Beat's jacket, but maybe it's that, a fresher image to my beloved graffiti punk.
I feel like most of the criticisms of the JSR3 art style comes from a place of nostalgia, and people forget that the reason why the JSR games had a strong Y2K aesthetic is because the game was literally made in the early 2000s. Like, I fully believe if SEGA had released more JSR games, it would've eventually come to this art style.
JSR also has some comic dots (not sure what they're called) in the background. Also every game is still seemingly in early especially if a sign in the Crazy Taxi part simply say undecided.
TBH, the new JSR still kinda looks cel shaded, but in a less solid color cel shade and more in a cell shade you would see in games like sifu, but with more color. i also think that its pretty stupid that people don't like that its cell shaded, but at least the amount of people that don't like that its cell shaded is pretty low
I feel like they just kept the cell shading but just upscaled the models drastically. Plus, I love the effects that were on beat's skates when he jumped off the telephone line, looked like comic effects and added a cool touch to his skating. The civilians do however look like generic anime characters which I don't really like. Also, I love Professor K's hairstyle in this game. It went from crazy spiky poking out dreads, to white pointy hair, to regular but long dreads. Love his constant hair changes.
I really like the new style, I think it's a good upgrade. It IS cellshaded, and the more I look at it, the more I can't wait to see more in this style.
Jet Set Radio is definitely still Cel-Shaded. Graphics are literally so good now that you don’t see the polygons on Cel-Shading anymore. It looks like a comic but it’s smooth.
I actually like the new look, gives more life to the city rather just seeing it as just a bright obstacle course. Cel-shading just wouldn't capture that Japanese metropolitan look I seen many times in Japan.
I’m open to seeing what they do, but I’m not convinced as of now. To echo what you said, I do believe it’s leaving behind some core values of its identity. But like I say, Im interested in seeing if things do change or perhaps new footage will change my mind.
I like that the new JSR3 looks new and different, honestly I think JSRF perfected the Y2K Neo-futurism asthetic and if they went for minimilism instead of detailed it would clash with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. I'm so happy all the signs were correct, we finally got a new Jet Set Radio! Funky Uncle must be thrilled!
I think it’s looks beautiful. It’s obviously cell shaded, just cell shaded with more Polly counts because it’s being made on more powerful machines. It will easily stand the test of time like the other games visually. And with modern developments, mechanically it will almost certainly play far smoother than the others. I’m beyond excited to get my hands on this game, and hopefully play it well past its expiration date like the others.
Honestly i do still prefer the older artstyle as it feels more inspired and looks better imo, however style isnt the only reason why i play jsr, the new features like the parkour look really good, and are an excellent evolution of the gameplay from the previous two games
If you want something that looks like, but plays way better than old Jetset. We already have bomb rush cyberfunk. But that didn’t even get so much is a mention at the game awards. Real sus, considering how jets that was announced there.
I genuinely don't mind JSR taking on a different visual style, I am just so happy to see the game get some much needed love after so long. And after the great time Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was for getting people interested in the type of game it is, I think the announcement came at a really good time as well.
I agree with everything you said, but am kind of surprised you didn't mention how so many people loved Jet Set Radio: Future, a remake of the OG game with it's own unique traits, also happened.
I just hope the new Jet Set Radio revitalizes the style of music it uses because oh my god after listening to the original, Future and even Bomb Rush's soundtracks. It felt like i was ascending to heaven.
generally looking forward to the game but i cant help but think the visuals feel a little cheap, hopefully they'll be improved once the games actually finished
it’s not 2001 anymore 😂😂😂😂 People thought the new Jet Set is gonna look like Bomb Rush or JSRF lmfao. Super trippy trippy cuz literally just a couple days before SEGA showed this Power Surge trailer thing, I was thinking exactly of how a modern day Jet Set game would look with the power of hardware today. The reason the original two games look that way is due to technological limitations (oh I just got to that part in the video) but I don’t think I gotta say that. New game looks really good, new Professor K looks super cool too! The art style literally looks like the original Jet Set Radio, but redone with modern fidelity. I love how it looks, can’t wait.
The only nitpick on art style overall is just missing stylized proportions. Since you noticed the exaggeration with large skates and headphones, even anatomy portions of characters included that worked with limitations. But the new entry’s style is welcoming and what I nitpicked is only just a design concern that can be glazed over, since the point of the game’s were made in their time. But it still ties in with the cel shading and its aesthetic in a more evolved way, that still has this fun, fresh look to it with differences of its style, considering its been two full decades a new entry has been released. So I say it’s neat they’re experimenting, and hoping the gameplay and it’s core mechanics are still retained once we get more trailer reveals. (and it would be nice for a possibility for rereleases of the two previous games come to light if the game is a hit)
Just happy to see they bring back jet set radio that game was head of time, from music to fun game play there's unique, very fun the type game that doesn't exist nowadays
I hope this means that many other Sega properties get revivals like Kid Chameleon, Lunar, old school Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Toe Jam and Earl, etc.
My only slight nitpick. Is that im not the biggest fan of Beats new outfit. Like the sweeter and shades are pretty good but. I don't know the skates, and headphones are kinda basic. Like i kinda wish that they took more inspiration from jet set radio futures design. By having the headphones with those pointy tips at the end, and more stylized skates. And other small things i miss, is that cool little green symbol on his shirt, or giving him his gloves back. But I might warm up the design once I start playing the game! But maan its so good to see jet set radio back! I've never expected to see one of my favorite sega games to make its grand return like this!
All of this... talk doesn't exactly manage to save JSR3 from any negative opinion, if that actually WAS your goal. Anyway that style? Just call it Uniqlo-core and move on far and away from it... with us. Also, yeah. It ISN'T what we or probably anyone likes. I thought that was the point...
all the people who don't like the new look are just Y2K hipsters who don't know how to move on from the past. the art style for the new jsr is literally the perfect evolution of the old look. The backgrounds could use some work, however the character models are reallly good.
From what we have been shown of the style, yeah I don't like it. It looks so... bland. So safe. I know JSR and JSRF came out at a different time, but to me this art direction just looks like Sunset Overdrive with a blender toon shader on. It has so very little style when the series is all about style.
Honestly, I think the art style in Jet Set Radio looks pretty good imo, the only thing that's bothering me are the trees that doesn't look very cel shaded or stylized, I hope they change in the final build.
Im sooooooo excited. I think this is the golden ticket for Sega to claw back their reputation and prestige in the modern era. The upcoming jet set radio is the dream come true of my 7 year old self who couldn’t stop crying when he beat jsrf and realized there was no more new parts to play. From Bomb rush, which I hope becomes a series, to this new jsr, my inner child is thriving
I like the new style and I kind of think I know why they made it different and that’s to appeal more to the Japanese crowd since Jet set actually did better outside in the west so now they want a style that’s in the middle and can appeal to both markets
i think what might scare me more, is that they MIGHT not get hideki naganuma back, for union reasons. i don't know too much about what is going on, and im probibally waaaaay off, but i remember him tweeting about something along those lines. if he does get to produce music for it, that would be so great
i guess on the surface of this trailer, I kinda wish the characters weren't trying to be realistic in proportion, I want them to look somewhat cartoon like, keep them in his unreal-engine setting with a funner character design. I guess more so with the main character. Super early days tho!!
My heart exploded with excitement tears and anticipation when I saw the new JSR pop up during SEGA's announcement and the last thing that was never on my mind was; "Oh wow this style sucks." I really dislike knowing there are upset fans out there not appreciating that SEGA is FINALLY giving us our childhood back and instead are complaining about the changed visuals. Like you mentioned, the ORIGINAL CREATORS ARE BACK and that should be what people focus on, we're getting a game from the creators themselves and they know just how much we loved the first installments, give the updated style a chance guys, the game isn't even out of early development yet!
The only thing I afraid of new JSR is the world size and traversal design, especially after seen Hover and Sunset Overdrive world. It's okay if it won't continue the futuristic stylized world but just make the size and traversal good enough.
I think even Golden Axe doesn't look cartoony enaugh... I like the look of Jet Set Radio though... Not sure about Crazy Taxi but something is off there imo
So much of jet sets radio’s theme and aesthetic is the time period it released in, including its limited hardware. I do think there is a bit of an overreaction though, it’s still cell shaded and it still looks really cool. I just prefer the og JSR games though.
i think the issue to me is that the original jet set radio's design philosophy exudes a punk rock energy that's missing here. not in the musical sense but in that ryuta ueda's character designs are kinda funky & ugly, in a charming way. it's sort of why hi-fi rush (a game channeling games like JSR) is a miss for me - the characters are too clean-looking. i would have been fine with a new stylistic approach for the new game if it matched the punk feel of the original. go balls to the wall, totally redesign the characters, make them funky-looking in their own way. instead they just took the original designs, stretched them out, and buffed off all the charm. it feels like the worst kind of compromise. and i get that this is the "safest" route for marketability, but sega sacrificing the game's punk sensibilities so it can make the line go up isn't something i'm a fan of.
The new JSR seems like a reasonable evolution of the original art-style. I think they can (and likely will) add some more elements and filters to give it some edge before all is said and done, but I like the higher fidelity. Besides, it points towards potentially bringing something fresher to the table in the wake of BRC. If JSR wasn't changing the art style, I'd be less excited about it at this point because BRC already provided what I wanted from a JSR throwback sequel. Why have two of the same game?
I had these same thoughts, I think PCGamesN made an article that eluded to these trailers about how "art-styles are dead and hyper-realism bad". Similar to all these detractors completely ignore the game is clearly still cel-shaded just because it doesn't look like an N64 game anymore.
wait ppl didn't like the new design? my first reaction was loving it lmao Like, i understand with stuff like sor3-4 where the change was drastic, but jsr 3 looks basically what yo be expected from a modern entry in the series. I personally always seen sunset overdrive as what jsr would eventually do with its artstyle, use grafity and y2k as flair, and i love that game art. As a fan of the other franchises, yeah crazy taxi looks just about right and shinobi looks like a dream! the only game im skeptical is golden axe to be honest, and i don't even know how to modernize that series (maybe something like brutal legends... trully don't know)
I would have preferred if the new JSR looked like the old one, just with better pokygons and no pixelation (the eyes in even Future looked pretty bad if the camera got up close) the Crazy Taxi argument is stupid though, that wasn't even cel shaded, that was literally just the graphics looking so old that they still looked a little cartoony.
It’s important to look back on JSR and JSRF. They were sleeper hits. The gameplay was just OKAY. The style. Top notch. The sound track. Outta this world. Atmosphere was everything. If this game has a thumping ass sound track, captures a piece of counter culture, and handles like 50% as good as any other game, I will be plenty satisfied.
The new JSR looks like the game called Killer is dead's graphics, it's cool, but again wait and see... About JSR on dreamcast, tbh wasn't only about cellshading...
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god, I am so SO excited for JSR 3, I cant even begin to explain. I still listen to the dang soundtrack of JSRF. Though Im sad that some people are not happy about how the new game looks, the only thing I can say is... HAD the game been in an art style that I wasnt happy with, I might not be AS hyped for this game. Its really about what kind of video game style you like. Which is decided basically the second you see any game play of it. Luckily I think the new game is a new style that is reminiscent of the old game style, which I enjoy. Anyways, needless to say Im going to be playing this game and Im probably going to be buying it for every single person I know so I can talk to them all about it :))))))))))))))
Omg yes! Sega won it for me! Love them old games bout dang time they bring em all back!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though with Shinobi I dunno? Mean looks cool that’s cool definitely excited to play it for sure! But I dunno I love the old art style more for the Shinobi three game. But that being said I still dig it and can’t wait!
I'm hopeful, but I would be really surprised if it turned out as good, let alone better than BRC. It's just indie dev team that put their heart and soul into something vs big corporation that hasn't been in touch with their fanbase for decades. Not saying it's gonna be a bad game or anything, I just really don't see it reaching the same heights.
I have criticisms, but their mainly directed at sega themselves about timing. Like why now after Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has started picking up steam. Ofcourse they probably started development before BRC launched, but not before BRC was bulding up hype with its own development starting since 2020, and its amazing teasers showing off how it was growing. Basically im thanking Team Reptile for showing sega theres still an audience for games like Jetset and Aggressive Inline
Have you tried neon trail? Also roller champions some jet set radio based items and arena that dropped about 2-4 days agoI would love to hear your thoughts on both

I still wish they kept the y2k comic book aeshtetic. The reboot looks like it's trying to look like every other videogame on the market.
Ture... it was so special
I like it, reminds me of Gorillaz
Jet set Radio future was a blast. ^^
Oh btw i forgot to add this but HIDEKI NAGANUMA BETTER BE ON THE MUSIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM
Can't wait to see this game return!
DUDE I USED TO PLAY CRAZY TAXI IN MY LOCAL CAFE IT WAS LIKE THE ONLY "ARCADE" HERE IT MADE MY CHILDROOD
Cute :(
I really like the new style, I think it's a good upgrade.
I like your opinion
I think it’s looks beautiful. It’s obviously cell shaded, just cell shaded with more Polly counts because it’s being made on more powerful machines. It will easily stand the test of time like the other games visually. And with modern developments, mechanically it will almost certainly play far smoother than the others. I’m beyond excited to get my hands on this game, and hopefully play it well past its expiration date like the others.
Honestly i do still prefer the older artstyle as it feels more inspired and looks better imo, however style isnt the only reason why i play jsr, the new features like the parkour look really good, and are an excellent evolution of the gameplay from the previous two games
i hope cibo matto makes a song for the game.
Golden Axe looks amazing. If it's proper rpg now instead of stage based arcade, I'm down
If you want something that looks like, but plays way better than old Jetset.
Two franchises I lowkey wish Sega would at least play around with: Altared Beast & Kid Chameleon.
It did say that it’s early footage at the bottom
JET SET RADIO MY FAVORITE GAME EVER can’t wait to see how this turns out ! Also I hope they make lit soundtracks as the first one “ ahhhh memories
if you like jet set radio there a anime name air gear and it is good
it’s not 2001 anymore 😂😂😂😂 People thought the new Jet Set is gonna look like Bomb Rush or JSRF lmfao.
I'm Soo fucking excited for jet set I have not stopped talking about this game. Never
Same I always been hoping they make another one we never gave up hope
@@who1334 I have literally Not stop playing. Still have my og Xbox with the Sega GT /JSRF
All of this... talk doesn't exactly manage to save JSR3 from any negative opinion, if that actually WAS your goal.
Anyway that style? Just call it Uniqlo-core and move on far and away from it... with us.
Also, yeah. It ISN'T what we or probably anyone likes. I thought that was the point...
jet set looks good, but crazy taxi looks like your typical triple A game + a mix of yakuza which would ruin its identity.
all the people who don't like the new look are just Y2K hipsters who don't know how to move on from the past. the art style for the new jsr is literally the perfect evolution of the old look. The backgrounds could use some work, however the character models are reallly good.
I’m excited for these sega remakes… I hope Capcom does something similar with their older IP’s… Would love remakes of Final Fight and Mega Man Legends
Imma need a new ssx game now and my nostalgic sports games hype will be through the roof
They need to add all xgames sports…bikes and boards included I love that we can use our hands in jet set now.
I like the new style and I kind of think I know why they made it different and that’s to appeal more to the Japanese crowd since Jet set actually did better outside in the west so now they want a style that’s in the middle and can appeal to both markets
I hope NiGHTS will get the same traitment !
i think what might scare me more, is that they MIGHT not get hideki naganuma back, for union reasons. i don't know too much about what is going on, and im probibally waaaaay off, but i remember him tweeting about something along those lines. if he does get to produce music for it, that would be so great
i guess on the surface of this trailer, I kinda wish the characters weren't trying to be realistic in proportion, I want them to look somewhat cartoon like, keep them in his unreal-engine setting with a funner character design. I guess more so with the main character. Super early days tho!!
This
I can already see the comments agreeing with you, knowing they were talking shit about it 😶
I hope these games capture the feel of arcade games again that's something sega games always felt like to me
Let them do them I've been waiting 20 years maybe not sure how long but I'm going to buy it regardless
Beats OG fits drip is unmatched
Jet Set Radio being represented with a skateboard instead of inline skates might be a little foreshadowing for adding skateboards to JSR3, like BRC
The arstyle of jsrf specifically. I wanted atleast something close. But we need to see more gameplay^^
HOW did I not know this was revealed two weeks ago
I had these same thoughts, I think PCGamesN made an article that eluded to these trailers about how "art-styles are dead and hyper-realism bad". Similar to all these detractors completely ignore the game is clearly still cel-shaded just because it doesn't look like an N64 game anymore.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has some competition
Please Sega give Hideki Naganuma a chance again (also 0:15 McPig face reveal jumpscare)
We're in for a Sega Renaissance!
the sheen on the dj? you mean the dj standing in a dark room infront of the brightest light source?
Jetset 3 is gonna get me back into gaming! The new crazy taxi got me sold
wait ppl didn't like the new design? my first reaction was loving it lmao Like, i understand with stuff like sor3-4 where the change was drastic, but jsr 3 looks basically what yo be expected from a modern entry in the series.
Bro no World of Goo 2 mention in the intro? Best announcement of the show
The new JSR looks dope
My of my favorite games of all time
The new JSR looks like the game called Killer is dead's graphics, it's cool, but again wait and see...
If its the original developer than i trust the game will be fun buuuuut i will miss the y2k art
I'm hopeful, but I would be really surprised if it turned out as good, let alone better than BRC. It's just indie dev team that put their heart and soul into something vs big corporation that hasn't been in touch with their fanbase for decades. Not saying it's gonna be a bad game or anything, I just really don't see it reaching the same heights.
its the perfect evolution of the original Dreamcast visuals, it looks great.
think shinobi is the only one that looks off. it wouldve looked great with a more serious tone. jsr looks great and updated well imo.
