    I do agree that Jim McElwain did have to address the issue, but in a more composed and intelligent manner. By yelling and screaming like he did to Taylor, all he will get is a knee jerk reaction. Rather, I would have just sent Taylor to the locker room and done my "yelling" in the office. McElwain has to learn to be the better man!

  • @johngoogly
    @johngoogly 9 років тому +5

    interesting that some people love his fire, I don't. That was completely unnecessary. All he had to do was tell him he didn't like it and bench him the next series. I have a feeling he's not crazy about Kelvin because he's not his type of player. Another player was flagged for taking his helmet off and he didn't go off on him Then he benches Kelvin next game and makes him third team, but he didn't bench the other player. You know Fred Taylor didn't agree with what he did, especially the benching. I understand making your players more disciplined but there are other ways than yelling like a mad man on the sideline at a player. It makes both the coach and player look bad.

  • @Eazey_Now

    That's not a throat slash. That gesture means game over. The way that reacted wasn't justified. He wants his players to show self control but, obviously he doesn't have any.

      It can also be construed as a throat slash I have seen people use it that way before, he does have self-control do u not see Nick Saban the way he went after TJ Yeldon for the same thing

    As a Michigan fan with Harbaugh at the helm, this is the kind of passion we like to see, and I think Gators fans should like to see this too. Particularly at the beginning of the season- coaches need to let their players know that kind of crap will never be tolerated.

      +AtrHoliday to scream, curse out a player and be generally belligerent shows passion. Celebrating a touchdown (throat slash, nae nae, raise roof, whatever) is 'crap that won't be tolerated'. Gotcha

    • @atrholiday2889
      @atrholiday2889 9 років тому

      +A Jackson That's not the point. Whether or not you agree with what gestures or celebrations should warrant a flag doesn't matter. The fact is that Taylor chose to do the throat slash knowing it would result in a 15-yard penalty, he preferred a personal statement over his team in that moment. And as for coach conduct, I'll admit that the cursing was probably a bit excessive but I think he had every right as a coach to be furious that his player would blatantly receive a penalty like this. If nothing else he's setting the tone and making it clear to his players what needs to be done to win, so I'd call that passion.

      Young athletic men only respond to animated discipline. It's proven. You have to put out energy in what you are saying or players will not listen to you. Sports athletes are constantly doing repetitive athletic moves and training. To break any habit you have to get animated and exaggerate your speech to let the athlete know and get his attention. It has to seem like a big deal to everyone because it is not only directed toward one athlete. It looks bad on TV but it is necessary to break a habit by an athlete and serve as a warning to other athletes.

    This was a complete overreaction by McElwain, totally uncalled for. Yes Taylor should have used better judgement, however McElwain's reaction was out of line. Come on dude calling out Taylor's manhood, yelling like a lunatic at the kid for a penalty. Someone in Gainesville better remind McElwain that he's in Florida now not Colorado, Kelvin is one of the few humble kids out of the Glades. McElwain is going to fuck around and catch some hands if he keeps selling out. And to the UF fans, boosters, and alumni. The state of Florida collectively hands down has the best high school football programs in the country. Do you'll think those kids from the Glades and South Florida are going to commit to UF with a Jackass like McElwain at the helm? Get real.......

      Because, by the rules stated in the NCAA, you can't do that and because he did it, it cost HIS team a penalty. That's why it's a big deal.. yeah, the fact that it's a penalty to "excessively celebrate" is pretty dumb, but that's the rules and Mac isn't going to allow his team to break those rules, especially on something so avoidable as a throat slash..

    I think officials need to just relax. It simple means the other team is finished and not that they are dead or are going to die. Chill out. I like how the coach took care of it though. Dumb penalty during a tight game. Relax people.......and as a UM fan, I hate UF but come on guys!

    Putting all opinions to the side concerning the validity of the penalty. It's a known rule concerning the gesture. Gestures of this nature aren't allowed in FB anymore without a penalty. All players know it. The player couldn't resist making it. It was more important to him than the team. Regardless of the great play call, regardless of all the other ten players on his team who executed well to make this play work - he wanted to call attention to himself with a gesture he knew was not allowed without a penalty. Selfish. The coach should've handled it better and looks as if he has his own issues with anger management. One "gesture" the coach made himself was that he wanted to slug the player. Wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. Both were out-of-line.

    • @SCMTW
      @SCMTW 9 років тому

      +John Smith You didn't understand what I meant to say concerning opinions. I didn't think I would have to go into detail. But here goes - There were 2 very separate entities concerning this - 1) The contents and description of the penalty in general (or validity) as it is described in the FB rule book 2) The actions by the players and coaches concerning the breaking of that rule on the field.
      What I was trying to say was - let's put aside talking and giving opinions about the fairness and validity of the penalty (because that's not going to change, for now and it's simple) but let's discuss how everyone acted and reacted on the field concerning the TD and then the penalty. That's what the whole video is about. The part concerning actions is the part that the players and coaches have control over - "actions." So the most important part to discuss were the actions on the field by the player and coach and THAT's what I wanted to have a discussion and give an opinion about.

You can only sell the "new coach/staff" for two recruiting cycles then you'd better be winning. An unstable/fire breather of a coach + back to back six win seasons means the Gators new coach in 2017 will be Charlie Strong. chomp chomp keep chewing their arses Mac!!!

People defending the player and upset that the coach doesnt allow this behavior. The kid made a mistake and the coach let him know its not going to be tolerated, simple as that.

    McElwain is already one of my favorite coaches. I honestly fear playing Kentucky and Tennessee this year because they're so much more motivated and playing harder. I remember going to Florida games when Tebow was there and they were such a professional team and they just got the crowd going by how clean and efficient they were on the field. Seems like Muschamp ruined this team and McElwain has to fix it

    • @CodCentral17
      @CodCentral17 9 років тому +1

      I totally agree with you. Muschamp got pissed about things too but there never seemed like there was any progress in fixing them. I'm glad Florida hired a coach that puts more emphasis on offense. I don't think I could deal with the gtors losing to uk, since it's been an eternity since they beat us. Hopefully we get VH3 back and the players are fired up this weekend to go out there and play tough!

    I would've done it differently.. Saved that for the locker room.. You never want to embarrass a player especially when your parents aunts uncles and grandma are there cheering you on in the stadium and on TV.. Now this poor kid going to see this all over the net.. Grandma probably wants to punch the coach. Kevin Taylor will probably get some comfort cookies from Grandma on Monday..

      +Dan Troy Dan. I agree. Sit his butt on the bench, and rip into him in the locker room. Then sit him for the next game. If you're such a tough coach, don't show it by throwing a tantrum, show it by sitting the guy for a game.

      getyoasshome I know it's an emotional game. I'm not saying McElwain is evil. I'm not saying he's a bad guy. But if he sits that player for a game, that shows a lot more to the other players than screaming at a player. Sit the player for a game. Make the player apologize to the team, and promise it' won't happen again. The problem is the player "lost it", then the coach "lost it". I don't think that's most effective.

    • @Theycallmekenney
      @Theycallmekenney 9 років тому

      Bill Brown you don't need to do all of that he did enough with what he said...what he said was a message for the ENTIRE TEAM...he said "look at me, get your head up, BE A MAN" he didn't call him any names or any of that... These are Men 19 a and up... you have college players out here hitting women, doing ignorant shit on every campus in america it needs to be said there is no need for suspensions.

    That deserved immediate reprimand. You don't wait until the game is over and then rip him behind closed doors after he thinks all is fine. You call attention to that and shut it down immediately. As a player, you have to know that in today's college football any type of personal celebration is going to get flagged. Quite frankly, the way Florida played that night, he had no business celebrating. Florida is lucky that it was a team that wasn't on the talent level of a true Power 5 team because that would've been a loss. I bet you my paycheck that practice this week will be much more attentive and business-like than last. Go Gators. Handle your business.

    I think McElwain reacted fine to this incident... A gesture like that(cutting of the throat) is just way too violent and mainly really bad sportsmanship and that's what a lot of people forget about in sports now in days. You should respect the other team no matter what because you are both doing what you love, and you would want the other team to respect you. Signaling a "slashing of the throat" is immature, and childish.
