Spot on!! I ran a large power equipment dealership at an Ace Hardware store for 20-plus years. Toro was our stud brand, we sold hundreds of their walk behind units annually, and the Personal Pace drive, later known as Auto Drive, was the number one part of their machines that caused trouble for owners. Your tips on correcting problems on these drive systems are a big thumbs-up. Many times you could adjust the drive cable to correct the action of the drive system, for trouble backing up. As you said in another video, there is a sweet spot on these units which will allow easy backup. If you aren't in the sweet spot when trying to back up, it will drag. Toros have been like that since the SR4 series hit the market in the early 2000's. There is NO WAY to completely eliminate the backward drag issue. It's a characteristic of the drive system.
Last week I curb picked a 2006 sr4. I had no idea what a find this mower is. This mower was used hard. Cast deck was chipped up in the front and has a crack in the bottom of the deck at the side discharge. I repowered her with a briggs from an old murray and she is a mover. Now I have a back up for my 2001 personal pace in near mint condition. I found the 2001 at the curb also 2 years ago. It needed a new float. Old one was full of gas. Now I just need to find a plug for the 2006 sr4. Thanks for the toro vid's.
Looks like that newer model is a bolt but for most Personal Pace Recyclers and newer Super Recyclers (pre handle redesign for either) with a regular nut for the adjustment, you can buy the plastic knob/nut from the older Super Recyclers and put that on instead and make fine adjustments easily without tools or having to stop mowing. I also always put the optional “traction assist handle” that comes standard on the Time Master on all of my Personal Pace machines. Most of the newer models are compatible, older ones you have to find the correct angle for it and drill the holes yourself. Makes one handed turn arounds and hilly terrain much easier.
Honda flippers are ok. What about cruise control .... But you can't turn when the drive is engaged. I'm surprised the cheap craftsmans didn't keep the clicker drives to allow turning.
Excellent channel. I ordered the 21564 yesterday. I stupidly sold my 18 year old Honda HRX 217 that was still good so I can buy a fresh one before Honda stops production. Literally the same day I sold it Honda issued the stop sell due to the decompression issue in the cam. Nobody knows when or if Honda will start selling their inventory again and I don’t like borrowing mowers. I have a feeling I’m going to struggle with personal pace at least at the beginning after 18 years of Honda’s drive system. Does look like Honda, just like all brands now, no longer makes em’ like they used to anyway.
2-3 years ago I made that adjustment for my neighbors lawn guy when he thought the transmission on his Timemaster was bad. I made one small adjustment and it was not enough so I made another small adjustment and it was perfect. It only took 3 minutes to do it in his backyard and I have never owned a Personal Pace mower.
Hahaha that was a quick adjustment! It’s really easy for someone not used to these machines to think something like a major issue is wrong! Thanks for sharing this Eric! Have a good weekend!
4:00. Agreed. With so much competition in this space coupled with the market shift to electrics, I can't see how they can keep producing mowers with this obvious drop in quality and longevity (ahem, *plastic carbs* 🤮).
Just picked this mower up this past weekend. When you mean decrease traction or increase traction. Do mean slow down the self pace is decreasing traction and speed up self pace as increase traction? I cut this past weekend and felt like I was flying and the grass was cutting but I could see where it was leaving some blades uncut. Could be I was moving to fast.
Much needed! Thanks Do you have advice how to properly clean after use from dirt and wet grass and how to fix or replace the back plastic flap. Mine always get tucked in, where I have to lift the lawn mower up to release it to normal? Considering taking it off.

Heyman, big fan! This video led me to purchasing the same mower. I just finished mowing the lawn and half way thru the personal pace stopped working entirely. At first I thought something got caught in a wheel or below, but no its the self propel not working. Ever had that happen?

Hoping to get one if they comeback but I don’t know what to do for now. Assuming you may know more about the situation than others. I was an idiot. I ran the mower over an area that was real rough and had plenty of sticks. A back wheel came loose, so I tightened it. Not long after, the belt came off. I cleared it as much as I could, put it back on, and it only lasted about 25 minutes before coming off again. I'm going to get a new belt, but any thoughts, did I mess some sort of alignment up when fixing the wheel?
@@mik2585 I doesn’t sound like there should be an issue with the wheel but I would make sure the belt guide on the transmission is secure and in good shape.
The personal pace system definitely needs maintenance at least once a season. Take it apart one side at a time and lay out the parts in a very careful order. Clean them carefully and apply a good quality grease. Inspect tem carefully (gear, rocking pins, bronze wheel bushings). Put it back together. Now do the other side. The gears only need a small amount of wear before they don't mesh with the wheel gears.
Thanks for this video. My Toro 21464 was stalling when personal pace was engaged. After going through the carb and checking the auto choke it turned out the personal pace cable needed to be tightened. The mower is only two years old.
I’ve got the same model wonder if you had an answer to my question. I was going through some thick grass and all of a sudden the mower became hard to push. A little bit of white smoke came from underneath the motor and top of the deck and the personal pace stopped working. Do you think it was the belt smoking and needs to be replaced?
My toro recycler personal pace manual says to loosen the bolt and pull cable jacket toward the mower until all slack in cable is removed. Does this procedure not apply to all personal pace mowers?

I have the 60v version of this mower and the manual does outline the procedure you described. Your video encouraged me to adjust the drive in my mower more so than the manual
Hey LL! This is interesting because another 60V owner mentioned they didn’t see anything in the manual on this procedure! Wonder what’s up with toro on this! Thanks for sharing
@@GarageGear I’m in Canada if that makes a difference. I purchased it from a dealer.
@@LL-mt2nz hmm not sure.
My new super recycler locks tge wheels when i pull backwards sometimes. Not everytime, but more than id like. Haven't figured it out yet
Video coming out on that soon! Stay tuned Jay!

Too funny (NOT!!)
This seems to be an issue with lots of these. Curious to know if you figured it out cause I think my dealer is BS’ing me. Cheers!
@@apexiumim2741 here’s the link to the video apex! WHY DOES MY TORO SUPER RECYCLER 21564 NOT BACK UP?

I’m having trouble with AutoReverse on my recycler, I’ll be watching for that video JB. Thanks for the tips
That video comes out Saturday morning on the back up issue! Stay tuned my friend!
Great info. Have one of these and never knew.
ROCK ON Ed! Now you know! Enjoy the mow my friend! Have a good weekend!
I've got an SR4 and I need to check this out because it's been so long since i messed with this I have no idea anymore.
Oh ok it’s worth a look! Might improve its performance!
Replace broken front glass s 23 ultra
?
Hey JB, how do I find out what kind of spring to get?
Also, how often does the belt need to be changed? Do you have a video on how to change it?
Thanks
Hey John you’ll have to search your model number on a parts website. Vary rarely do you need to change a belt. Maybe after 10 years. I have a change out video on a front wheel drive model
@@GarageGear Thanks JB
Mine was set way to fast. I pulled the cable towards me 2 ribs and now it’s right for me.
@@fredpierce6097 awesome thanks for sharing Fred!
@@GarageGear god bless you and all your followers!
@@fredpierce6097 god bless you as well my friend
New Toro's are junk. I dumped my new one after only a year and instead fixed up an older John Deere JS63. Works so much better, and I prefer the bale bar for self propelled over personal pace
💯 agree with you my friend! Old deeres rock!
I disagree my 2020 toro recyler has been used to mow hundreds of yards and made over 1k$ with it although its on its second motor
@@conner5611 you must have gotten lucky. Within 10 mows, the left rear wheel came off, and one of the bolts that holds on the rubber bumper went missing. Plus, it never started in one or 2 pulls. Always 3-4 pulls, that's even when it was new out of the box
@@killaman7592 Wow, just wow. My 2015 SR4 still starts on the first pull with only basic oil changes, air cleaner cleanings and spark plug checks.. The only issue ever was a failed cable for the personal pace propel function. A $15 cable and 10 minutes of install time and that's it. They don't make them like this anymore.
you really need to hammer home to toro with their cheapness. All ur videos provide so much value to owners of these machines really makes it worth while to buy one Toro being stupid
Hey oz! I hammer them in a lot of videos lately! Still waiting on some changes to be made by them! Time will tell!
My belt came off last night which makes the self propelled work. Took it to my local small engine shop to get back on. Frustrating
@@brodygoalie been there before brody I feel your pain
Had to drop off yesterday Friday. Hopefully I will get back next week. Do you have any idea if the super recycler 21 inch mower is being revamped for 2025? Just seems toro can improve their super recycler. Your thoughts. Thanks
@@brodygoalie I have no idea if they are making any changes but if they do I hope they’re in the right direction
Well if you hear anything happening with changes for 2025 let us know! Much appreciated. Love your vids. @@GarageGear
@@brodygoalie will do my friend! Thanks for the positive feedback!
