I own a 21386 Super Recycler. After watching this video, greasing the wheels had a huge effect on the smoothness of my mower. It’s about five years old and I guess I missed this in the owners manual which recommends you grease them every 25 hours after reviewing again . Mine were pretty rusty and I try to meticulously maintain my equipment. Applied some red and tacky grease and now they are like new.
Yet another great tip and vid JB. By far the best UA-cam channel for home owners and equipment! Your vid was posted BEFORE I had to let my chickens out of the coop…. wth JB??? Gonna nickname you the Rooster!
I also coat my entire mower blade with Fluid Film after every time I clean, sharpen, and balance it. It not only really reduces corrosion, but makes the accumulated, dried grass much easier to remove. I apply Red-N-Tacky to all the moving wheel parts using an acid brush to ensure I evening distribute the grease without using too much.
I've always used white lithium grease for this job or even marine waterproof grease. More so the white lithium personally but I agree at least once a year this video reminded me I haven't done this this year to my mowers. Iowas been in a dry spell and I've only mowed maybe 5 times this whole summer I'm kind of sad about this because I love mowing!
I have quite the story about that Craftsman 3300 psi pressure washer I bought. I actually had to buy two of them because the first one had a factory defect that was causing the engine to spray fuel out the carburetor. Luckily I was able to return it and get my money back. The second one I bought didn’t have this problem and unlike the first one it had the idle down feature on it. Overall I feel like its a pretty good machine for the price and it will last as long as I take care of it.
for storing the machine for the winter, do you do the following: Remove the spark plug, add 30 ml (1 fl oz) of engine oil through the spark-plug hole, and pull the starter rope slowly several times to distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent cylinder corrosion. Marvel mystery oil would be good for this.
I have this mower and the flap broke which requires you to take off the wheels to change it on SOME revisions of the 21564 at least (or maybe it's for the new flap part that early units did not get.) For 2 seasons I mowed twice a week and did two dethatchings in which the Super Recycler was like submerged in lawn debris during cleanup and there was even less blades in the axel cover than JB had. On one of the rear wheels I did have a bit of grass on the gear that's attached to the wheel, but I greased it anyway. The bolts on my rear wheels are stuck and looks like they used loctite on them. I think I'll take another look and try to hammer them out so I can grease them too.
Hey JB...AWESOME post! Couole comments FWIW...Really important for ppl to ensure that they have no cracks or holes in the wheel covers - this allows grass and debris to get in and clog up the gear/pinion. When i get grass really jammed in my gears, i use a folding knife to chisel out the debris as wioes just wouldn't do it...I was both impressed and disappointed with the build on that Super Recycler...the gears and axle bolts pretty sturdy...the fact no grease nipples - cheap as you said...but what would be a 'NO!' for me on buying one of these was getting a close up of the height adjusters - not up to the quality of the older model SR's or the John Deere's I just won't part with! Probably ok for light duty mowing - but with the price of those mowers - they should be built to last much longer than your standard big box steel deck mower IMHO...but, I still recommend that mower to homeowners looking for a great quality cut and decent machine...the 14SB/JX75 aren't in production so that would mean a commercial Toro/Exmark for similar durability and most ppl don't want to spend $1000's on a push mower...great maintenance video! Keep up the good work!
Hey Kirk! I wish John Deere still made those mowers! Those mowers were on another level. You have to spend a lot nowadays on a decent commercial mower to get a decent level of quality! Thanks for watching bud!
I wouldn't worry about grass being attracted to the grease. here in SW Florida it's all about the sand and grease definitely collects sand. Good video for those not mowing in a sandbox.
Typically you don't want to grease the interface of the inner diameter race and axle bolt/screw, you'd want something like green or blue Loctite. The reason is that you want to minimize the chance of any relative motion between the two. You always want the bearing to do the rotating. Locking agent will prevent corrosion and still allow easy removal of the bearing.
Thank you for posting this video. I learned something new today. I only used to spray some silicone lube to the wheels height settings but never applied grease on the wheel's gears...i will now though, thanks again and keep up the good work brother! 👍
Another great video JB! I’ve got to grease those wheel bearings and change the air filter on the Honda HRX. Would be nice to have fittings on these. How you doing with the ankle! Cheers my friend!
Definitely would be nice to have some grease fittings for sure! Ankle is feeling better everyday! Hardly any swelling anymore and movement is getting better. Another week or two and should be good to go! 👍how you feeling lately?
Please do an update video showing what it looks like inside there now. That amount of grease is going to collect so much dust, dirt and debris now. There is a reason manufacturers put a certain amount of lubricant on things. Plus, the bearings are sealed. No need to coat them in grease.
Definitely going to do these suggestions, ordered all the stuff in your amazon link. Regarding the common winterization debate and storage. Fun fact.....Toro and Briggs didn't make the debate any easier. Toro says to burn off the fuel and store empty. The Briggs manual says to fill to the top and store full to prevent moisture. Flip the coin, probably doesn't matter much in the end.
For all of my Toro gas machines, I store them with an empty tank. I make sure to drain the carb after each season. I run premium gas with Seafoam. My 13 year old power clear still starts after one pull.
@@GarageGear no problem. Thanks. I’ve been meaning to tell ya, I did this on my Honda a while back from your video. On many instances I have the mower roll off the driveway 😂 I love it. Buttery smooth
In the desert, there's sometimes more loose dirt (and a lot of dust kicked up) so the grease becomes a serious dirt magnet. To counter this, I use more grease to coat the inside of the deflector cup or plate and wheel. You might think that would attract more debris (or at least trap it), but it's debris that would otherwise stick to the gears only, so the larger grains never make it to the gears, only the silt which is a lot less abrasive.
y buy 4 months ago model 21564 the wheel foul a part, bad manufacturer making broke from the rear wheel ,the bolt that hold the tire,,the Bolt got stock on the pivot rear arm, terrible design, hope tis coment get to TORO,i will make the complient too,but this problem is not good
You can buy a tube of general purpose #2 grease for a grease gun (even if you don't have a grease gun-you could scoop out what you need)...if you want to spend more and get a great product - Super Lube...good luck
Putting too much grease is not the best thing. There is a reason they only put one drop of grease that's all you need. Then regular maintenance. Toro mowers are a great product.
Here is a LINK to the RED & TACKY GREASE used in this video! Thank you for supporting the channel! 👍

My toro recycler has zirc grease fittings for the rear drive wheels. Hitting those with a pump of grease twice a season should be all I need correct?
That only goes so far in my experience. I would that then take the wheels off and see how far the grease actually went. You might be surprised.
Great tip JB. It keeps the mower moving and grooving. Have a bless weekend together with family 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I have a few year old super recycler. The rear wheels have grease fittings. Is your procedure instead of using those or in addition?
Those Zerk fittings are only for greasing the driveshaft collars, not the gears themselves.
I would hit the grease fittings and grease the wheels as well! Paul is right! 👍
Thx for the video JB! Checked my push mower wheels, they were pretty dry. The more you know!

You can also use a small curved pick and pull off the plastic bearing covers. Then you can clean and regrease the actual bearings.

I use a grease gun with a needle on it and grease inside those "sealed bearings", that aren't really sealed.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing beatenpaths!
I think a dry lube like graphite powder might be better so dirt doesn't collect on the gears. What do you think?
It’s worth a test
Great video - good tip on using Jack stand!
Thanks Mike! Have a good weekend bud!
Between fluid film and red & tacky there's nothing that can't be lubed lol.
RIGHT ON SMALLBLOCK! Works everytime! 👍
Should toro recyclers with plastic gears in the wheel and metal gears on the axle be greased or left dry?
@@johnd.5480 hey John not a bad idea to grease those. It will definitely cut the friction down.
Can you use brake pad grease on the gears or does it have to be specifically the red and tacky grease?
I would use a grease recommended for bearing applications like red and tacky!

What is your opinion of the grease trapping dirt that will increase wear?
That’s my concern too. These Super Recyclers have ball bearing wheels on all four corners and spin extremely freely.
My thoughts as well. I am now trying a dry grafhite spray which, for me, seems to work well with no grass sticking to the grease.
