And I enjoy listening to the sighs of my girlfriend (who is a British English lecturer) while I am watching your videos :D It is a fine Lego set selection you got there. Although, I am a bit surprised that the new Razor crest has not been mentioned. Maybe, we need another category (the best big Lego set?) to fit it in? :)
I got super into Lego during the pandemic being mostly stuck at home with a lot of free time. I discovered this channel quite quickly and Tiago has helped me out with nearly every purchase I've made so far. This was a great video with worthy winners and I look forward to what next year has in store for Lego and this channel. Thank you, Tiago!
Was so excited for this video Tiago I started getting into Lego this year and I’ve really enjoyed your videos it has helped me massively when it comes to decision making and increasing my knowledge and for that I thank you. Looking forward to more epic videos in 2023
Not nearly enough! Thank you for that. It cost me a few hundred dollars but I'm glad I upgraded my cheap $20 tripod for a fluid head tripod setup. I even got some sliders and new lenses to up the video quality so yeah, this comment made my day! :)
@@TiagoCatarino It really shows. I like the fluid movement, lighting, nice colors. And, not being a native En speaker myself, I love your accent, 'category' and all!
“Let’s do this again next near, shall we?” Yes please, this one was great! But also all your other videos, without which this one wouldn’t carry as much weight. I’m just going to keep watching each one, it’s much easier than watching or playing every Oscar/Game Awards nominee
For me it has to be either the orchid or The Starry Night. Both make for absolutely gorgeous display pieces, and while I’ve taken down a lot of my sets to make room for new ones, both the orchid and The Starry Night have stayed up since I got them, both shortly after release. My best budget set, though, has to be the Halloween cat and mouse. All the budget holiday display sets from this year were adorable, but that kitty is just about perfect in its design. I say that with full bias, since I’m the proud owner of one amazing black kitty cat. As for play value, the majestic tiger is superb for the price. It’s very pose-able, and for much of the year I had it prowling around my orchid, ready to pounce on the little bird that comes with it.
@@BlackringIII I get your point, jazz and/or live music isn't as popular as it used to, but come on? How many people ACTUALLY know about Horizon (the game)? I'm on both pc and console, and have never even seen gameplay of it? Some cool musicians in lego-form would catch so many more peoples eyes? Would they not?
@@ZodeeRL Horizon is a pretty massive franchise; the first game (PS4, PC) sold over 20M copies, ans the sequel (PS4, PS5) sold over 10M, and will probably increase in due time (especially after it goes on PC).
The Galaxy Explorer was my pick. But I am sure if I built the Lion Knights Castle that would take the cake. But yes out of all the crazy sets I have built this year for 2021-2022 sets, the Galaxy Explorer took it for me. I really do love the Lighthouse and it comes up in a close second for me. Great video Tiago!
I really hope I can get the Lion Knights castle before it retires. I don't have any nostalgia for the theme either, but it seems like an incredible build, display piece and playset. I honestly wish more if the adult oriented stuff were more than just display pieces, I feel like I'd actually take them off the shelf to engage with them that way.
Late to the show, but had to chime in, the Lions Knight Castle is my first LEGO purchase in over 25 years. NONE of the others would have even come close to getting me to do that. (though the galaxy explorer was close, I just feel like I can't go into that many different genres) They really elevated the old theme, while keeping the classic theme but modern updates, and evolving it into more city drama than just military. In terms of Scale, beauty, fun for all ages and sexes, diversity in action and city life adventure, universal theme appeal, etc... all adds up to the best offering LEGO has ever created. The only down side is there is not much else to go with it, and if it takes 10 years to get a decent line of complimentary sets then some may lose interest. Being new to the LEGO market I must say I was not pleased how they did the forest hideout and this GWP enticement on such top of the line sets. They need to go full sail and release a line of products quickly to revive this theme!
The heart wants what the heart wants! I wonder if watching someone else build the set on UA-cam will make it easier for you to follow the directions. It’s definitely a skill that comes with practice.
For me the best Lego set of the year is definitely the Galaxy Explorer so I’m glad you picked it for best value! While I didn’t grow up with Classic Space as I was only born in 2000 I did grow up with other space themes like Galaxy Squad & Space Police III. The building experience is definitely the best I’ve seen from the few other sets I got this year with the Fast & Furious Dodge Charger being a close 2nd. Plus, it also has 2 other alternate models for a 2 man & 1 man spaceship as well which essentially makes it a Creator 3 in 1 set. Also, it’s only $100 which is a lot more affordable than other 18+ sets like Bowser & The $400 Castle so a lot more people can get it without having to spend a lot of money just for an Adult set. I got mine for 25% off at Walmart though which makes it an even better value than it already was! Definitely the highlight of my 1st year getting back into LEGO & I highly recommend this set to anyone who likes Space.
Mine was the Galaxy Explorer. I have the Lion Knight's Castle as well, but I just love the nostalgic feel from the Explorer. Something about seeing the iconic space figures in 2022 puts a smile on my face.
Out of the sets I've built that released this year: Display Value: Botanical Collection (Orchids and Succulents) Honorable Mention: Lightyear XL-15 Function: Death Star Trash Compactor Diaroma Honorable Mention: Sanctum Santorum Building Experience: Boutique Hotel Honorable Mention: Botanical Collection Succulents Best Value: Lightyear XL-15 Honorable Mention: Boutique Hotel (pre-price increase), Mandalorian N-1 Starfighter Favorite Set of 2022: Boutique Hotel
The other big detail about the Lion Knights Castle is that it's a big source of medieval themed bricks and minifigs for your custom builds. It's harder to find good castle parts since Harry Potter makes up most of the fantasy themed sets. Personally, I just placed an order for a few sets online. My sister said that she's never really put together a Lego set herself before, so I got the Hogwarts trunk (she's a Hufflepuff), the mini Disney Castle, and the Succulents botanical build. I'll probably split those sets between Christmas and her Birthday. She's also a fan of the paint by number apps on her phone, so I might get her a mosaic set at some point as well.
I feel like the decisions made by the public most of them didn’t read the category and just picked the Lego set they liked the most which was most of the time the lion knights castle. For example in the best value, LKC had the worst ppp ratio compared to the other three yet the public still picked it.
You really got us with the thumbnail 🤣Maybe also do some Lego Razzies? Or would the Hulkbuster just win all categories? All jokes aside, thanks for all of the great content, looking forward for all that 2023 is gonna bring us!
Here's my hot take for the day. Stickers aren't that bad. They don't annoy me, and I don't dislike them. Feel free to get upset in the replies if you wish
Castle is indeed amazing, building it was joy, it is a cool display piece here in my office, and my kids love to pick up to play from time to time. All of that with no nostalgia from because even though I wanted Legos for most of my life, I only got my first sets last year.
I have and played with the original castle and I must say it's the set that I liked the most. If I had seen this castle when I was a kid, I'd be crazy over it. It really has everything you could imagine on a really cool medieval lego set.
Great vid but in my opinion I feel like the Optimus prime should have been a nominee for the best feature sad it can literally swap from a robot into a really good looking truck
Thank you for the video, it was a joy to watch :) I'm an 80s kid, I just love to see the classics comeback. Although I don't think it's all just nostalgia and these sets are really appealing for all ages
I am more amazed how lego has turned itself around to what it is making today. The have not slowed down at creativity in the sets. Yes some have not worked but failures show you are not afraid to innovate. Look at the old and current Eiffel Towers! No comparison between the old to the new sets!
Great Video Tiago! As somenone with most of these sets, I think all your comments are bang on. I'm only missing the foosball and Bowser. You're definitely making me reconsider the Bowser.
When I was young, my grandmother bought me the original harry potter castle, complete set. My stepmother ended up throwing it all out. I don't really think I got the interest out of my system. I would love to have some of the more advanced builds as an adult, but the price point on some of them is pretty high.
I got the orchard Lego set and it took like half an hour of people being in the same room as it to notice that it’s Lego. Only negative thing is the dust
Great video to sum up the best Lego sets of the year! I loved how you involved fan voting as well as giving your unbiased opinions on everything. Thanks for the awesome content and I hope you have a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
All worthy winners, good picks! And as you said, as long as you can afford it, you can't really go wrong with the Lion Knights Castle! It has so much fun details and also looks amazing!
Exactly, IF you can afford it, but that is a big if: a lot of people won't be able to. And that is also my issue with this pick as overall best: in my opinion it should have been a set that more people can afford (so out of the 4 nominees the tallneck or the delorean).
My favorite this year was definitely the Back to the Future set. I notice that you also made the same choice I did with my Ecto 1 and opted not to apply the rust stickers. I'm also not a fan of applying stickers to my sets but do so only when I must to make the set look right. Second place for me this year was the Hulkbuster. I get the critiques but I enjoyed the build nevertheless.
I am so proud of getting lion’s knight castle up to this day I keep playing with it. The Easter eggs I keep founding again and again and again, you are literally buying an adventure slash treasure, it is simply the best set of all time IMO
@@brosisjk3993 IMO the rivendell is not really a play set, in a way there's very little hidden feature, or changing form that you can play with. It is more of a collectibles, like each lego character has its own sword/weapon. It's beautiful set nontheless, though the amount of bricks i think most are spent in the roof tiles.
@@rochelimit55555 @brosisJK precisely... its a really beautiful set, but the LIon knights castle is something you give to a kid (or make an adult feel like a kid again) or group of kids of multiple ages and sexes and all can find something fun about it. First set I have gotten in 25 years, its the best LEGO ever made.
I have the Tallneck and believe that the 'dish' head should be horizontal. It's a bit finicky but there is a position for the joints that allows the head to be horizontal :)
My favourite of this year is the mighty bowser, he's always been my favourite mario character and he just looks so good and chunky, also one of the most solid builds. I can barely get the vespa to stand properly but this guy feels like a proper brick, as he should be.
Your taste is spot on. Most of the lego sets featured here are on my list. You make a good case for the Lion Knights castle though for someone who doesn’t have any nostalgia for it and it not having any license, I feel it’s a tad too expensive even though it’s jam packed with features. I’m sure old time and classic lego fans would love it though.
Loved your insights and opinion Tiago! Agree with most of your picks. And Lion Knight’s castle definitely made my set of the year. Loved building it and displays so well. And those minifigs!!! Chef’s kiss.
Great video, I loved that you looked at sets from a bunch of criteria and gave great overviews. For me the orchids win because theme and display value are the most important factors to me, but I'd love to build any one of the other sets you featured.
@@TiagoCatarino the only thing I noticed was the category name didn't appear on UA-cam unless you expanded the description. Maybe next time if you have the category name be near the beginning of the poll question so everyone would see that first. A lot of people voted without reading the whole thing.
@@rafaszczawinski4103 I get that but printed pieces are are kind of overrated as if you decide to take a set apart for pieces you can’t you the printed ones unless you hide them but you can always take off stickers
I totally agree with the best set of the year. Funny thing is I was building mine during my interview process with Lego. I ended up landing my dream job, and will most likely pick another one up at the employee store once I start. (along with a long list of sets, haha)
I was lucky to get the Galaxy Explorer for only $45 after a sale and coupon combination. It is the first set I had bought in months and over the course of 4 hours I built it while watching movies. It is (piece wise) the largest set I have ever built and while I have many of the same issues you mentioned in your review, still loved building it.
That’s awesome, I had a similar buying experience. The set itself is already a bargain by todays standards, being an even $100 for over 1000 pieces, but Walmart was even selling it for $75 for a while, and then I used a Rakuten referral to get $40 cash back so I got the Galaxy Explorer for $35. Ended up getting a second one to keep sealed 😂
Great year-in-review! My favourite is also the Lion Knight’s castle. Second place Boutique Hotel. Third Place Tallneck. I have yet got to build the Eiffel Tower (still in box) but I think this might become my number 2. Edit - aah yeah I still gotta build Starry Night, Orchids, Succulents and Pyramid of Giza as well. Giza didn’t get a nominee in any of your categories but I think it will become a favourite for me as well (I just love the ancient Egypt time and Assassin’s Creed Origins is one of my favourite games ever).
I haven't seen any reviews for the Eiffel Tower, but my main concern would be repetitive building sections. If the instructions are full of notes and facts about the build, it could make up for it. On an somewhat related note, Savin Yeatman-Eiffel, great-great-grandson of Gustave Eiffel went on to create the series Oban: Star Racers.
I am no expert, though my understanding certain LEGO Friends etc types are actually the big sellers "bread and butter" of LEGO and may never go out like Nexo Knights etc did. I dont know? I enjoy your LEGO channel any who!
Series idea for Tiago: (day 13) Tiago should make a subreddit where people can post Mocs that he reviews and gives feedback monthly/weekly. It’s going to be good for both the fans who are looking to improve and will probably take Tiago less time to make.
Part of the review process would have to require looking at parts, building instructions, and the assembly process. If it was as simple as just looking at pictures before reviewing them, he could cut the subreddit entirely and just use posts on Lego Ideas or BrickLink to post feedback on. Managing a subreddit requires people to design the page, write the rules/FAQ/wiki, program the automatic functions of the page, and moderators to keep order.
@@jardex2275 he wouldn’t give a detailed review, just some thoughts. The reason I thought a subreddit could work is because he would be reviewing work from fans of the channel rather than people who don’t even know he exists. A subreddit was the simplest thing I could think of. After it’s all set up he can just get a moderator and review it every month. The videos will take a lot less time to make and might even bring in new viewers. It might work, it might not.
Only negative criticism of Lighthouse is the sound of the motor that turns the Light. It detracts from the solitary quiet beauty of lighthouses. You can't enjoy the ambiance and mediative quality of the oscillating light with the annoying sound been a distraction. Good for play, but not to enjoy as an adult who wants the feelings a lighthouse evokes. Could Lego do sound proofed motor, possibly not. A compromise possibly having a separate switch for light/motor and just light. I've had to partly take apart and rebuild as I've disconnected the motor wire.

best dfisplay value is the pyramid for sure
All worthy winners, good picks! And as you said, as long as you can afford it, you can't really go wrong with the Lion Knights Castle! It has so much fun details and also looks amazing!
I’d love to get it. My only problem is figuring out where to even put it in my room
Exactly, IF you can afford it, but that is a big if: a lot of people won't be able to. And that is also my issue with this pick as overall best: in my opinion it should have been a set that more people can afford (so out of the 4 nominees the tallneck or the delorean).
When Tiago rates it, you know its legit.
Same
Putting the hulk buster in the thumbnail was the ultimate joke
Nothin will ever beat the emerald night
I am so proud of getting lion’s knight castle up to this day I keep playing with it. The Easter eggs I keep founding again and again and again, you are literally buying an adventure slash treasure, it is simply the best set of all time IMO
im so torn between it and rivendell
I'd like to say thank you for wonderful reviews of the various sets you've featured. Keep on!
I have the Tallneck and believe that the 'dish' head should be horizontal. It's a bit finicky but there is a position for the joints that allows the head to be horizontal :)
Correct, I followed a UA-cam tutorial for it. Turns out, (a lot) more people were building it slightly tilted.
Yall did the Galaxy Explorer dirty
Razor Crest laughing at the corner
My favourite of this year is the mighty bowser, he's always been my favourite mario character and he just looks so good and chunky, also one of the most solid builds. I can barely get the vespa to stand properly but this guy feels like a proper brick, as he should be.
To me it was definitely the lego bowser, it was the most enjoyable for me to build out of all of the 2022 lego sets I wanted
Yeah. That had to be number 1. I’d have gone for that too 👍. Not picked it up yet, but I will. Just looks epic.
Aye orchid gang represent 😤
Your taste is spot on. Most of the lego sets featured here are on my list. You make a good case for the Lion Knights castle though for someone who doesn’t have any nostalgia for it and it not having any license, I feel it’s a tad too expensive even though it’s jam packed with features. I’m sure old time and classic lego fans would love it though.
Loved your insights and opinion Tiago! Agree with most of your picks. And Lion Knight’s castle definitely made my set of the year. Loved building it and displays so well. And those minifigs!!! Chef’s kiss.
Bought the castle months ago and kept it in box for christmas. Really looking forward to opening it as Castle is my favorite theme .
Great video, I loved that you looked at sets from a bunch of criteria and gave great overviews. For me the orchids win because theme and display value are the most important factors to me, but I'd love to build any one of the other sets you featured.
Can you show a single set you’ve actually bought.
I've shown 3. The Tallneck, the Delorean and the Bowser. Whats your point?
The lego Titanic is crying but I agree with all the choices
LEGO Titanic was a 2021 release :) My favourite LEGO set ever by the way!
I can't believe people voted for Lion Knight's Castle for best value. They need to learn to read before they vote. It was best VALUE not best set.
Exactly. I think I need to approach the fan vote differently next year. Not exactly sure how though.
@@TiagoCatarino the only thing I noticed was the category name didn't appear on UA-cam unless you expanded the description. Maybe next time if you have the category name be near the beginning of the poll question so everyone would see that first. A lot of people voted without reading the whole thing.
the amount of fun potential this thing is for kids of all ages and sexes blows all the monetary value out of the water.
You would swear a sticker killed his parents with how much animosity he has for them
Most Lego fans are like that. It is understandable, as many of the sticker-heavy sets are still too expensive to justify not including printed pieces.
@@rafaszczawinski4103 I get that but printed pieces are are kind of overrated as if you decide to take a set apart for pieces you can’t you the printed ones unless you hide them but you can always take off stickers
no hulkbuster what im shocked ;)
It almost made the list but not quite... :P
I totally agree with the best set of the year. Funny thing is I was building mine during my interview process with Lego. I ended up landing my dream job, and will most likely pick another one up at the employee store once I start. (along with a long list of sets, haha)
What do you do for Lego if you don't mind me asking
Genius idea putting the hulk buster on the thumb nail you got us good
I think I’m in love with these sets 😍
I'm waiting on a tallneck delivery right now, happy to see people like it
I keep coming back to that one. I have never played the game but I love the look. I’ll get it one day
People when there is 1 sticker in a Lego set 😢😢😢 😱😱😱😱🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😥😥😥😥😥😰😰😰😨😨😱😱😱😱😱😭😭😭😭😖😖😖😟😣😣😔😔😒😕🙁😫😫😩🙁😭😭😭
You needed some drum music, but great video anyway
Good. Choices in there - personally I don’t have the tall neck - but on your recommendation I will look out for it in 2023
I was lucky to get the Galaxy Explorer for only $45 after a sale and coupon combination.
Just sold and trashed all my lego stuff they sold out to the woke mob so no more lego for my family!
i hope this becomes a yearly thing!
I am no expert, though my understanding certain LEGO Friends etc types are actually the big sellers "bread and butter" of LEGO and may never go out like Nexo Knights etc did. I dont know? I enjoy your LEGO channel any who!
i really like the first one as it gets a lot of hight over a lego city
Series idea for Tiago: (day 13)
Tiago should make a subreddit where people can post Mocs that he reviews and gives feedback monthly/weekly.
Personally I thought the Technic BMW 1000RR motorcycle was the best set of 2022.
Best functions should have been NINJAGO marketcity or whatever you call it
edit: it should also win best value
