The Bog Coat is terrific! Roxanne Richardson is exploring sock knitting through the ages, and has made a sock from a pattern from a pair found on another bog body. It's fascinating to see how these garments were worn and repaired. Clothing was such a valuable commodity up until relatively recent times. I also love your new hair do!
Thanks Mairead. You are right - we used to spend so much more of our income on things such as clothing and food, and so they were valued much more highly and were considered less disposable. Fascinating how things change. Thanks and take care xx
It was great to see you this morning. Betty wants her dinner, so she is staring at me. We have had two nights of hard frost and another tonight. My flowers are done. 🎉
Wow your big coat is beautiful and it looks so warm and squishy. Love the mittens and the fingerless mitts as well. The yarns are gorgeous, can’t wait to see what you create. We will miss your singing, but you deserve to have that time to yourself. Have a great month.
Hiya Lesley. Love your bog coat. Think we all need a bog coat, especially if they're warm. Simple and effective idea. A good stash buster, too. Seeing your sport weight yarn reminded me of a sweater quantity I've got in stash. Something to investigate tomorrow. Have a good week, take care. X
Hi Angela. Thanks so much. I am thinking of the "Aimee Cardigan" by Joji for the Sport weight - but there are certainly lots of patterns to choose! Hope you find something gorgeous. Take care xx
Hello Lesley, wonderful podcast, hello to ‘my mate Mandy’. Will miss your singing, but life can throw us curve balls. Oh and happy birthday cheer keep knitting. 🎂🧶🥳
Love the bogcoat. In fact, I love it so much that while listening to your podcast I hunted down the relevant EZ book with the pattern; pulled a bunch of the fingering weight yarn that I have lying around from my experiments dyeing with the plants in my yard (the colors suggest that they may have been in a bog) and I'm knitting a swatch. You are inspirational, thank you.
Hello Bog Princess, I love your coat, haha! I am knitting 6 pairs of fingerless mittens as party favours for my kids birthday. Thanks for keeping me company :)
Hiya. I am glad you are in your home - come on now, you were tempted to just park up the RV on the drive and carry on living in that, weren't you! Hope the box packing isn't too awful. Thanks and take care xx
Lovely to see you today Lesley 😊 so happy my tips are useful. I'm still getting caught up on all the videos, being sick off and on really uses up valuable podcast watching time! Love your Bog coat, so many options! And what a way to use up alot of yarn. That's so perfect!
@@NotQuiteEnoughYarn oh noo, I'm much better now! I meant just catching up from when I was off my feet, I'm always knitting lol, even when I'm sleeping I'm dream knitting lol ♡ ♡
I absolutely love your version of the bog coat & mittens! I've made a bog jacket before as well. Mine started out as a blanket and I just loved the garter stitch that was being created with 2 strands of scraps of sock yarn that I decided it needed to be a sweater. To that end, I cast off, then cast back on when it came time to do the sleeve. I then worked them across wrist to wrist with short rows, to narrow at the wrist a bit. I followed Elizabeth Zimmerman's suggestion for shoulder shaping with false seams. This is one of the very few sweaters that fit my shoulders perfectly because I was able to measure and put the shaping exactly where it needed to be for me. I didn't do any neck shaping, just a cast off and then back on for the remainder of the flat shape. Because of that I just created a little stand up, mandarin style collar to keep the wind off my neck, but not something that would flop around and get in the way. My sweater is very oddly shaped, as it's cropped sort of like a bolero, overly long, narrow sleeves (so I could cut cuffs off and resew as they wore out) and the little mandarin collar. But it works great for me. It's short enough that I don't sit on it and pull the shoulders back while working, high enough collar to keep neck warm, long enough sleeves that aren't too wide to work in, and it's just a bonus that it contains bits of all the socks and other sock weight projects that I've done for years. Like a nice memory style hug 🙂. I recommend the bog coat for absolutely anyone. I think I like it also because any modifications can be tried out in sort of a muslin fabric mockup, before charging into knitting or crochet. I also think that I want to make myself a quilted bog jacket from some of my quilt block leftovers. Leslie, you always inspire me to go off my own way in my knits! I love your combinations of yarns, colors, etc. It's just so darn fun! Thank you for sharing part of your life. Take care & hugs.
Hiya. Your bog jacket sounds amazing. And, as you say, a lovely memory item, too. The bog is rapidly becoming a new favourite, as I think of all the ways it can be made. Thanks so much for being here ans for telling me about your jacket xx
Will miss your vlogmas - but you certainly deserve some time to do something fun for yourself during advent💕Thank you for telling us about the Bogcoat - Such a wonderful idea! It looks so cozy. And warm 😁😍Love it too! Take care🌻
Hi Kristy. You should be getting warmer, shouldn't you? The Addi is expensive but fun (like so many things in life!). Hope all is well with you and thanks for being here xx
Hi Lesley Firstly, thank you so much for my pattern. Took me a while to narrow it down, but that's Ravelry's fault for hosting so much gorgeousness! 😇 We need singing!!! Love the new dressing gown. My late Mother in Law always called them House Coats. No idea if they are did items. Sorry mad ramble tangent! Well done on ALL the spinning. You have achieved some usable yarn from the pink bat, so it's a win! Hope Dad is doing ok. Have a fabulous November. xxJane 🐑🌈
Hi Jane. Thanks for taking part in the MAL - I know what you mean about too much choice! I've heard dressing gowns called house coats, too. I guess it makes it sound more like a "busy" garment than a "just going to bed" garment. All rambles welcome here. I am very pleased with the spinning and my latest (to be shown this month) is, I think, my best yet. Who knew that by practicing, we could get better at something? Now, where did I put the piano... Take care, thanks so much and love to you and yours xx
Love the bog coat and all the ideas you gave. Yours is beautiful! The fingerless mitts yarn is gorgeous! Your Dad's mittens are done in a beautiful color, too. Waaaaa, no singing this year... I'll simply have to go back to last year's vlogs for some. Completely understand, though. Have a wonderful week. ❤ 😅
Thanks so much, Judy - it has been a productive month in a crafting sense. Perhaps I should just go back over the last few years' Vlogmases and put out a "greatest hits" video!.... or perhaps not! Thanks and take care xx
I do love your bog coat. All the colors work so well together and flow together so cohesively. Try not to be too hard on yourself about the chain plying. My first attempt, I somehow got my right hand, which was holding the loop open and pulling up the yarn thru the loop, completely hog tied. My fingers looked like roped calf legs at a rodeo, all tied together in a bundle of tangled yarn. Chain plying does get a bit easier with repeated practice. I have not had to cut my hand out of yarn tangles again. Take care, and use your time and energy to do what makes you happy this festive season! harpingJanet
Thank you. Yes - it's important to stop and take a breath. Hopefully that means I'll be more discerning too - showing you the interesting things in the week, rather than just prattling on, because I need to put the day's vlog up. Thanks and keep well xx
All good here. I was away in the west of Ireland for out first fiber festival here since covid. It was great crac. Its so good to catch up with people in real life . And yes I broke the bank😁😆😁
Love the bog coat as I sit and knit on hubby's mitred square blanket thinking I have lots of mini crochet squares that would make a great bog jacket 🤔 You yarn haul is lovely and thanks for reminding me to re-knit my Magpie Tendency, the yarn is right behind me in a drawer and it wouldn't take long. Hi Enid. It was good to see you, too - sorry I had to dash away when my takeaway turned up. Yes, the coat could find itself being used in various settings. Thanks so much and take good care xx
Absolutely love your bog coat - I will have to definitely make one of these to use up some of my stash! I also love your fingerless mitts - a great idea to make the finger part so much longer than you can turn it back or leave it long to cover your fingers - I am going to try that myself now, so thanks for the idea!
Thanks Rosemary - I can't take full credit for the mitts idea - I think I got it from "Dunderknits", when Caroline used to record the "Knitting Vicariously" podcast. But it does make them even more useful! Thanks and take care xx
I absolutely love, love, love your “ house coat “ !!! I crocheted myself one 20 + years ago and wore that UGLY thing every winter until it tore completely up !! Considering you’re going into spring where the USA is starting winter you may not get a lot of use but never fear there’s next winter !!!😜😂 I’ve been making pot holder sets for a few weeks, stopped long enough to make a shawl by cinnamon stitches and it turned out so very pretty. If you get a chance check it out .❤. But…But….But, I loved your singing !! ❤️😂
Hi Becky. Thanks so much. I'm in the UK, so going into winter here, too - definitely hoping to get plenty of use out of the bog coat. Glad you are happy with your shawl. Thanks and take care xx
I was pretty clueless about the meaning behind bog coat. 🤷♀️ I thought you were comparing it to toilet paper. Thanks for the explanation. I think your bog coat is terrific.
Oh, the songs were always one of my favorite things to look forward towards. You new yarns are beautiful and I can’t wait to see what you end up making. One question, Are you WARM???
Hi Susan. Sorry that there won't be songs this year - I just don't have the time or brain space this year. Thanks so much and, oh dear, did I not mention the warmth? 😉Xx
Very entertaining video this month Lesley and I really enjoyed it! You actually managed a coherent sentence now and again (🤣sorry!) I was laughing at your “Art Yarn” as like you I’m desperately trying to teach myself to spin too and you are definitely better than me - but I keep practicing! I shall miss your vlogmas videos but totally understand as this year has been very hard for you. Hope you enjoy using your new Addi toy! Take care of yourself and thanks again for a very entertaining installment xx
Hi Heather - I don't know what was up with my English, especially at the beginning. I was tempted to re-record, but was afraid that it would get even worse! Hope that you are enjoying the spinning and even the "art yarn" can be used - I made a Stephen West "Jigshawl" from much or my early handspun - the shawl weighs a ton, but I rather like it. Thanks, as always and hope you are well xx
Love your bog coat, delighted to learn it was made on the Addi. Having just bought the 46 and 22 Addi, I am looking out for things to make on it and this is such a good idea.
Thanks so much - yes, I love my Addi (as you can tell). I am also trying Christmas stockings on my 22. Hope you have lots of fun with the machines - all of your friends and family will be very cosy this winter xx
Hiya. Thanks so much. I had a look at that pattern, but I wanted to knit flat, so went for the Drops, instead. I was tempted, though. Thanks and take care xx
But I looked forward to the singing! I have told you I spin to cope with strong feeling...may need to get more alpaca as 12 fleeces won't cover the current state of affairs. We have had nights down to -4 C already.Very happy to just stay in my little bubble as people are getting sick again here. Do hope you show me some Christmas dec later on.
Hi Cheryl. I will still record Christmas things, just not upload everyday - it's a time thing, this year. Hope you manage to avoid the sickness. Take very good care xx
I loved your London haul! What is the number of the Uneek colorway? Thank you for your podcast, which I'm sure takes a lot of time you could use knitting.
We will miss your fabulous songs, but I totally understand 🤗💖🎄
Thanks Susan - hope you're break is doing the trick for you. Take very good care xx
The coat is fabulous! It reminds me of those coats people sew from old quilts...like wearing a blanket for a coat. So cozy!
Thanks so much - it has that kind of feel about it, too. Take care xx

Love the bog coat! If you ever tire of it, I am offering it a good home. Enjoy the holidays. Enjoy the time with your family.
Thanks so much. I don't think I'll be getting rid of the bog coat in a hurry - sorry! I like it too much. Take care and thanks for being here xx
Best explanation of bog coat I have seen. The kitchen towel example really helped me. Thank you. Love your videos, projects, dog, everything!
Ah, that makes me happy - thank you - I always worry that I don't make sense! Thanks for being here - take good care xx
Wow your big coat is beautiful and it looks so warm and squishy. Love the mittens and the fingerless mitts as well. The yarns are gorgeous, can’t wait to see what you create. We will miss your singing, but you deserve to have that time to yourself. Have a great month.

Your Bog coat has my mind just spinning on using that idea for one of my own. I love the adaptability of the design.
Hi Joahanna - there are so many choices - hope you come up with something lovely xx Thanks and take care xx

Ooh - that is very exciting! I hope you enjoy the project - please let me know how you get on. Thanks so much and take care xx
Love you bog coat and mittens, what a brilliant idea with the construction of the coat that is very clever. Love your podcasts.
Hi Ann.
Thanks so much.
The coat is such an adaptable pattern - I must make another xx
Hope all is well with you xx
I love the bogcoat. It's an interesting construction. You have a safe and happy week.
Thanks Sharon - it was a fun project and there will be more in the future. Take care and have a good week xx
Thanks for the work you put into these videos. Bog coat looks very cozy. Hope it finds a spot in your wardrobe
Thanks so much - to find a spot in my wardrobe, I would have to take the coat off my back!
Thanks and take care - hope all is well xx
I love your colorful bog coat!
Thank you - I was very pleased with how it turned out. Hope all is well with you xx
Hello Bog Princess, I love your coat, haha! I am knitting 6 pairs of fingerless mittens as party favours for my kids birthday. Thanks for keeping me company :)
Oh - you are a better person than I am! Happy birthday to your son and good luck with the mittens xx
you know what Les , I’m liking the longer length of hair , looking good kid xx❤
Well, I have a choice - on the other side it's quite short! Cheers and take care xx

Good to see you! watching you from the new house in my own bed with boxes surrounding me. No one should move after the age of 50! 🤪

So often I knit the neckband one size smaller than the body. I always find the necklines are too big when the designer scales the pattern up
