- Republican Kristi Noem made history Tuesday night by becoming the first woman elected as governor of South Dakota. Noem defeated Democratic opponent Billie Sutton in a race that was closer than expected.

South Dakota’s had one party rule longer than any other state - the last Democratic Governor, Harvey Wollman, left office back in 1979. Alberta had been under conservative rule the same amount of time when Rachel Notley won. South Dakota officially overtook Alberta in that category on August 27, 2021.
She may be the Governor, but drives like a woman. From 1989 to 2010, Noem received 27 traffic citations, including 20 for speeding[91] and other violations. She said, "I'm not proud of my driving record, but [I've] been working hard to be a better example to young kids and young drivers out there." She had paid her fines and penalties by August 2010.
