Ave Maria - Otamatone - behind the scenes

  • People have asked about how this video was done, so here's the raw camera footage from the Ave Maria video. I have a black cloth over the stem / noting area of the Otamatone, and there is a black music stand oriented horizontally just below its mouth to provide a "floor". All the movement, rack focuses, etc were done after the fact.
    The performance, however, is not really altered in any way (except I think there's a bit of reverb added.)
    I always geek out on SFX / behind-the-scenes videos for movies, so thought it would be fun to post this.

    I love how the camera shakes when they laugh, but besides that.. This really is a treat to see after viewing the video of this master piece.

    That vibrato is so beautiful I could never top that, even after singing lessons (cries at the beauty of this song)

    I like how the lighting makes it look like it has an overbite.

      It actually does, kinda. Or at least, the way I hold the mouth always bends it like that.

      I'd like to see you try adding features like teeth, a tongue, or a nose, to one of these things.

      Well..it's just an Otamatone Deluxe...I use only one finger and slide it so that there's never a "jump" in pitch, which is not possible with the voice either...and beyond that it's mostly vibrato and determining when the mouth should open.

      I'd like to see you do some kind of ventriloquist type performance with one of these. It could be like a character for a kid's show or something.

    How'd you get the background to be dark in the final video?

    • @michaelthomasconnolly976
      @michaelthomasconnolly976  7 років тому

      Final Cut Pro X's Color Correction tool in this case, but any video software which lets you adjust brightness and contrast could get you there..

    • @Melissa0774

      What video editing program do you use?

    • @michaelthomasconnolly976
      @michaelthomasconnolly976  7 років тому

      Final Cut Pro X. But I'm not doing anything fancy...I think almost anything would work.

    • @Melissa0774

      Did you see my previous comments where I said you should add features to the otomatone, like teeth or a nose or something - and do some sort of ventriloquist type performance with it? Maybe you could attach rubber pieces to it with tape or sticky tack or something similar, in order to not ruin it. Or maybe you could even do green screen (chroma key) inside the mouth somehow. You could make its mouth look like it's a portal to another dimension or something. That'd be really funny, but it'd probably be really hard to do, though.

    • @michaelthomasconnolly976
      @michaelthomasconnolly976  7 років тому +3

      Every time I've tried to add something, it's like the charm has gone away...it exists in this perfect balance / uncanny valley place. But I like the ideas! I am working on a new video right now but there's more work going into set design...:D

      Michael Thomas Connolly thanks. would you consider the price jump worth it? I seriously want one of these and as very advanced cellist I think I'd be pretty good 😂

    • @michaelthomasconnolly976
      @michaelthomasconnolly976  7 років тому

      Yes, definitely. The standard one can barely be played in a musical way. Just too small and the touch sensor is erratic / weirdly insensitive, then overly sensitive on the two little ones I've played. The deluxe is pretty nice.

      Ah, I was referring to the cadenza. It sounds familiar but I don't recognize it. I don't think that's how Ave Maria ends but I prefer your version anyways.

      I just made it up :) I guess that makes me a real purist (no written cadenzas for me!)
