- MRI scans are considered as one of the main diagnostic tools for the assessment of spinal pathologies. This video will explain how a lumbosacral spine MRI scan is performed along with the protocols, planning and positioning for lumbosacral spine MRI magnetic resonance imaging scan.

MRI's do not hurt, just noisy. I have had 3 and I like listening to soft music when I have mine done. ( spinal problems ) Lay still and enjoy the music. 👍🏻 Vickie

I had one yesterday for my lumbar spine and I couldn't take it..the machine was to loud and the claustrophobia kicked my ass..
@@80sfreak42 I'm sorry you disliked the MRI . I had ear plugs and I'm not claustrophobic so maybe thats why I had no problems. I had L1 to L5-S1 ruptured disks.

Just had a scan for my spine 5 hrs ago. This was my 3rd MRI and the first time I’ve been fully inside the scanner. It was a bit tight inside, but after the first minute I just closed my eyes and thought good thoughts and it was easy.

I got this today & went into the tunnel feet first. The scan was fine & the nurses let me listen to Iron Maiden while I was in there. Been a bit woozy since but was told that can be normal. The scan was Better than I thought it would be
I’m about to get lumbar mri too and all I want to know is if I can go feet first and if my head will be out of the tube. I’m 5”4 (163cm).

@@paulgavin2267 I had mri c and mri th done. One was 15 one 30 min. Yet the receptionist told me whole back is 1h. So it looks like it shouldn’t be another 30 min
I had a mri today and honestly it wasn’t that bad I had no music so just had to listen to the noises I will say that I did open my eyes in there and it wasn’t far from my face but it wasn’t too bad I just kept thinking of why I was there and luckily it only took 15 minutes
That's motivating....I'm sitting in queue for MRI and getting an idea how much time it takes. I'm quite nervous I must admit.

I had a mri in August on my spine in an open mri machine. I couldnt listen to music in that one but i was ok . And the noise wasnt that bad it took about an hour.
1 of the scariest moment in my life, the longest 45 minutes ever... DO NOT MOVE, they reminded me... the second i was inside this scary monster, I was screaming inside my head dying to squeeze the buzzer ball but thinking they will make me start it all over again so i just play dead sweating like hell & thinking "just get it over with already" somehow it feels like forever.. i did good though because i was in so much pain due to my lumbar spine injury (L3) & trying not to move was the hardest thing to do in that annoying monster's tummy 😭😭😭 unfortunately, i will have to do another 1 next month... I hope there's no tumor as they claimed to see the first time around... Wish me luck ❤️❤️❤️ i hate every second of it & it's freaking expensive too 😭 i wish to be sedated on my next one 🙏🙏🙏

I barely made it through my scan in November. Today, I couldn’t make it at all & we had to cancel. I KNOW this thing won’t hurt me, and will assist in my treatment. But a phobia is precisely an *irrational* fear. We’ll see how my open MRI goes on Friday, I plan on doping up, just in case....

@@ovelesha you re most welcome. ..yes I went in feet...I've been diagnosed with postero lateral disc bulge and trust me MRI is not at all scary..it was my second time...the high pitched sound may bother u but I was okay with it...my pain was severe at that time that I felt good lying down for sometime there.😅😅for I couldn't sit or stand at that time..just don't move...close ur eyes and be still...if u move it will take longer...best of luck..

I had one today, best advice I can give is wear a sleeping eye mask thing, put it on before you go inside. It's terrifying for someone who's claustrophobic but it helps if u cant see, and don't try and put your hands up to see how close it is to your face

Its time consuming and scary for a patient to wait inside a stuffy giant elephantic and laundry like machine for a radiologist to capture patient's information bfore the scan is to be carried out

I had one a year ago on abdomen. Now 24th I'm going to have one for my lumbar spine and legs. So scared, 45 minutes in a tube. OMG, hard to fuss about my dad lived for 6 months in an Iron Lung. Only his head was visible.

I had my MRI also
I have been having MRIs for 30 years and a year ago I had two new technologists and they kept moving the bed back and forth in really jerky movements. My shoulders were already pinned against the side of the machine and it was the first time ever I hit the panic button and they tried to convince me to stay in until it was over. I had already completed my neck and was working on my thoracic spine which I injured in a fall while scraping snow off my roof. They said if I didn't complete the scan I would have to redo it and I said I'll go to an open MRI before I let you two at the controls again with me. Before I left the hospital I got a notification that the amount that they were able to see on the scan was unremarkable but the pain remains unremarkable and I can't even get a repeat scan using my own money.
Wait a minute....so you're busy entering my name and patient info into the computer system while I'm *inside* the torture chamber??? Why can't you do that before you put me in.
We do, this video is just for demonstration purposes.
In the hospital that I'm doing my placement in, one of the techs is entering the information into the computer and loading the protocols while another tech is arranging the patient's position and putting them in the machine, so that the scan can immediately start as soon as you're in.
The video shows them filling in all the information manually because it's a test patient for the demonstration of the video. All patients that have appointments / are registered by the front desk already have a majority of the information filled in automatically (name, age, patient ID, physician). The only thing we have to add is what position the patient was arranged (supine/prone, head first/feet first), weight/height, and our initials. That takes at most an additional 10 seconds if a tech happens to be working by themselves (which should rarely happen).

i had my back mri today. i went in feet first not head first..they put headphones on my head and still the sound was loud i was deep in the machine all the way in only took 10 minutes i was expecting 20-30 minutes it was a interesting experience..

So did you get an MRI of your entire spine? My doctor recommended getting an MRI of my spine in case I have nerve problems, and for my hip MRI the clinic did exactly as you described

I am not an advicate of thsi axial technique. It will often create cross talk posteriorly, andit is essential to ensure your slices cover the entire neural foraman. Disc protrusion and posterior joint issues are more critical at the neural foramen when teh symprtoms are unilateral. this is NOT an examination of discs, it is and examination of the full pathway of the nerve root from its exit from the cord out to the paraspinal regions.

I had to go to do this scan as well a few years ago..I wasn't expect it to feel that..I thought i was the only one who felt like clausthrophobic ..but as i can read comments, not..
I have lots of scans if you did not need a scan you will not add a letter telling you to go for one

If you don't like tight spaces just close your eyes, that is what I do. I will say that in the US, they always give me a gown that would fit someone who weighs 3,000 pounds. This gown is much better in this video.

I had an MRI today. I have some bulging disks and dehydrated disks somewhere in my lower back. It’s interesting but quite annoying. It was my second time doing one, and I had completely forgotten what it was like. It’s quite claustrophobic and I ended up taking almost everything off just in case my outfit had metal in it.
It’s very noisy too. I can’t promise you you’ll sleep through it. But a tiny tip from me is to think about other things and PLEASE DONT MOVE SO MUCH!!! Also don’t wear anything metal because it’s a big magnet. If you forgot to take off any body piercings you may have, good luck trying to get out of there.

Why am I lying on my back for a spinal MRI, rather than my stomach? What's the point of the scan looking all the way through my organs to my spine, rather than just looking at my spine so it's positioned at the top of my body?
I presume because lying on your back, your spine is in its natural position. Whereas lying on your stomach your spine is bent/out of shape etc.
That's why it's not recommended to sleep on your stomach

Is your hearing okay? An MRI machine can damage your ears permanently without any decibel reducer.

@@kamalia4026 you can try to find an open mri depending on what it's for they have one you sit down for the mri. Ask around. If you're claustrophobic a regular. Mri can cause horrible after effects be very careful
I have refused an MRI of my back because of severe claustrophobia. Many techs do not understand that, those of us who suffer from it, feel like you re being suffocated and buried alive. It is no joke. I even had to walk away with mild sedation. Finally, my oncologist has ordered anesthesia. Still, I may be the first to ask for this ???? They are having troubles coordinating and scheduling . But when they do, I hope to be completely under… just the thought of entering the room is terrifying to me. Asking a claustrophobic to cover their eyes, put earphones on, etc, etc, defeats the purpose and makes it worse….
@@marianeill6234 I have the same problem, and I've had three MRI's in my lifetime. The technicians are not trained to be helpful or patient re: this at UCSF... they see it as a bother and added work to their job. They response is always just, "You can refuse the procedure if you'd like," and shrug their shoulders.
@@ratt57 That is inhuman…. I have received 9 calls in the past 2 months to schedule me for my MRI… immediately , if I want. They dont get it.. I am not walking in there until an anesthesiologist calls me… In the meantime, I wait, with a compressed fracture….
It's terrible for me, because l am claustrophobic, but l can stand it.
