Two Wario types, handheld Sonic, watermelon madness, and even a mission based robot action game. Quite the year for arcade gaming.

I would love to hear you speak on your job as an instructional designer. It makes a lot of sense that people in a profession like that would also be interested in game design

"Warioware RPG" is maybe the best sales pitch for a game I've ever heard

Honestly I was on the fence spinning that section off as its own vid, just so more people could hear the good word of Knuckle Sandwich

2023 truly was an incredibly year for video games, I totally feel confident in saying it practically rivals 1998 as one of gaming's best years. I'm thinking about compiling a list of critically acclaimed and popular games that came out this year just to help reinforce this, though speaking for myself, any year Pizza Tower came out would automatically make it one of the best years in gaming by default. ;)

Isn't a Dream Team port unlikely because of Apple's funding of the project or something?

    • @hotcyder

A few games that secured Apple dev money eventually ended up coming to Steam (Mini Motorways comes to mind) so not totally impossible 👀 maybe a bit of a wait tho lol

I wanted to comment on your "a Better Gaming Diet" portion.
This has continuously been a frustration for me with people's attitude towards so many kinds of art.
I often hear people longing for new music, movies, games, that amazes them as much as their favourites did when they found those in their youth.
They often try to just ask "give me something like that again" without considering that it will never deliver on that. Sometimes asking their favourite franchises to grow up with them but getting upset when they don't deliver.
They don't consider that their favourites are their favourites because they're formative to them, shaping how they feel about art and making them rethink what art can do. But then they're not open to have art be formative to them.
I'm finding new cool art pretty regularly by pushing myself to engage with art that's quite strange and I might not enjoy. Sometimes you get lucky and you find some gateway-art that opens up a whole genre for you and you suddenly have access to so much new art you might love.

      @@hotcyder Thank you!
I do feel very strongly about this.
For example supposedly a lot of people's music taste pretty much established itself in their mid-teens, with their favourite music just ending up being something that got released at that age.
I think that's incredibly sad, to basically get your peak of an art-form when you still have so much more life left to discover things. I also really think it's not something inherent but is just a matter of attitude.

17:00 I don't understand you saying how foods were stolen from places rather than inspired. You don't need to be self-hating about your culture to recognize the crimes committed by it. All cultures have their evils, but we can choose to see them, reveal them, but also revel in the good parts of them. British cuisine doesn't solely consist of other culture's foods.
Finally, other culture's foods were inevitably inspired by microcultures neighboring them until unifying to the larger area.
Edit: 25:10 Your quote here about art is the same for all cultural things like dancing, food, etc. Even common behaviors are inspired as people mingle. So I hope you can understand my first message because of what you say here.
This is a great video by the way. I like that your insights aren't shallow for these games.

The section on Venba was written initially written a little meaner which fit with the tone of that comment, but lost some of that to focus more on the game. In hindsight, should have tweaked that line. Appreciate you stuck with the video at least!

How would you rank the 2D Sonic games: 1, 2, 3K, CD, Mania, Superstars from best to worst?

    • @hotcyder
      @hotcyder  8 місяців тому +2

Good question! To caveat: I haven’t played the entirety of Superstars yet so won’t include it here, and the first four I replay in the Origins collection for its QOL improvements.
Number 1 for me is Sonic 3 and Knuckles. A controversial pick because it’s two separate releases combined, but there’s so much content to it that it’s really hard to deny as the best of 2D Sonic. I like the change to the element shields, love the cutscenes. Coolest setting and story, really great level gimmicks - that end up repeated in later releases not quite as well as 3K.
Close second and my first if 3K was split up is Mania. Incredible graphics and sounds, plays better than the originals pre-Origins. Love the new level concepts, and adore its 3D special stages.
2 is third place: it’s a far smoother drink than the first sonic the hedgehog, and basically “figured out” what 3K and Mania would build on. Most memorable OST in my opinion.
Sonic 1 is 4th. Honestly it being this low isn’t because I don’t like it, but more I prefer the other choices over it. I appreciate its odd level ideas like marble and labyrinth zone, might be the strongest art style in comparison to the level of technology at the time - really love its kinda low poly 3D looking assets.
Last place is Sonic CD. It’s just a bit too strange and sprawling for me to appreciate, even if it includes two really great soundtracks. Makes me wish for the original concept of Sonic 2 (time travelling but in a linear order).
