Mad jack strikes me as being extremely similar to the run & gun game post void with the flashing lights turn down by 50%. (If you have epilepsy dont play post void)
Having played through three of the demos on your list in Mullet Mad Jack, Children of the Sun, and Crow Country those are my top three favorite demos of 2024 Winter Next Fest! Nice video btw.
Aaaaayyyy, nice to hear that you enjoyed Balatro! c: I hadn't thought about the idea of the game's setting being casino-like and using standard cards allowing for one to ease into deckbuilding stuffs easier until you brought it up, good point! All the other games you had covered were cool too, I'm not *too* much of a horror person, but Crow Country being a mix of both cutesy and creepy is interesting to me, might give it a whirl! As for other Next Fest faves, Joltzsi is a pretty cool take on Tetris and 1010! You move/rotate and drop tetrominoes onto a board from a topdown perspective to clear vertical/horizontal lines of tiles, but you can also place tetrominoes on top of spaces that are occupied with tiles to add 1 to their value! All tiles in a line must be the same value in order to clear them, higher values = more points, and stacking past a 4 causes you to top out. Harder than it looks at first, but pretty fun nevertheless. .u.
I've been playing the Balatro demos for months now, the game looks like it's gonna be huge in scope when it releases. Also, Mullet Mad Jack looks neat, though it does remind me a lot of [post void] in like general structure. Though it seems to have more going on, too.
Love the vid! The only thing I'll say, and it's just because I've seen others compare Mullet Mad Jack to Hotline Miami, but the game is much more obviously taking inspiration from Post Void. AKA fast-paced, roguelike fps where you gain time to live from enemies killed.
Known about Mullet Mad Jack since Gmanlives talked about it, and it's already caught my attention ever since. Cryptmaster might be the dungeon crawling Typing of the Dead game I needed. Children of the Sun, definitely wanna try that sniping puzzle shooter for sure. And Crow Country, I know Nitro Rad could stop gushing about it for its PS1-inspired graphics. So far, this has some great standings here
As much as I enjoyed Mullet Mad Jack, I'd say my favorite FPS this next fest was Echo Point Nova. From the same devs as Severed Steel, it's a mix of that game's fast paced movement-heavy combat with a Tears of the Kingdom-like floating island structure. A bit of a strange mashup of ideas but it really won me over by the end of the demo, definitely recommend it.
Always taken aback when someone makes a reference to Bizarre's The Club nowadays. That game came and went with the wind but it deserved better than that. Presaged a lot of what indie arcade games would do much later
BALATRO 2024 GOTY SWEEP

Balatro is going to be 2024's big standout roguelike

“.. it's
always good to remember that games can come in all shapes and sizes.”
But usually rectangles.
When are round games coming out

I'm shocked I never crossed paths with it before, it's spectacular.
Man, I missed out on some bangers this recent Next Fest. Thanks for bringing some of these to my attention!
Always next time!

Goes to show I haven't tried Post Void!
The games that gave me the most unexpected joy were:
- Duck Detective
- Kingsgrave
- Pesticide Not Required

Ooh, going to check that out. Thank you!
thank you a lot for making a video with your beautiful voice.
AYYYY NORTHERNLION REFERENCE??? IN MY HOTCYDER VIDEO??? POG
Mullet MadJack reminds me alot of Force Reboot. It's also a fast paced fps rougelike. It's pretty fun for those who want something like it.
You should still be able to play the majority of these demos now btw. Only demo noticed so far that no longer playbale is #Blud

I'm hoping to cover it the future! Adored Bizarre Creations work
Islands of Insight is the best, most addictive game in this fest.
BALATRO LET’S GO
very gud
So many cool games coming up and not having the time to play all of them it's not the type of hell I would envisioned as a kid
my personal favourite in nextfest this year
Gotta be "The Amazing Crackpots Club!"
Anyone know what is that dungeon crawling game shown rught before cryptmaster?
I love dungeon crawling games an i'm always looking for more new ones
Apologies - that was Monomyth!
you misspelled balatro in the description
No I didn't 😉
fair enough
Weird, these last two vids have been the exact same subjects as Skill Ups
Huh, weird coincidence
Nice selection of bad games
