Not just three guys soloing at the same time but each using different time signatures and magically blending them together to create a unique and melodic sound. These guys were the absolute best at recreating the studio sound live on stage with each guy multitasking often using their feet to play more than one instrument at a time. The holy trinity, there will never be another band like them.

@@De5O54 They are Canadian. No Irish links as far as I know. Amplification has changed over the years but, having seen them 17 times (and I've also been keen on their kit / stagecraft), I believe it's always been valve-driven' - a mixture of Marshall, Ampeg (bass), Hughes & Kettner. They have used a few triggered backing tracks from time to time but it's them playing. Geddy multi-tasked with bass, vocals and keyboards. He also used Taurus bass pedals when playing keyboards. However, on some of the more complex tracks, there was occasional use of a backing track. He also plays 6 string (he had a 6/12 Rickenbacker) and would occasionally play rhythm guitar behind Alex's lead lines. Unusually, they used a string section on their final album / tour.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!

The excellence of this band is of course undeniable once you watch this performance. I read somewhere that Geddy Lee’s speaking voice is definitely lower than his high tenor singing voice. Some vocalists have that discrepancy. For myself I choose the drums, because I’m very partial to them and can play a bit of percussion. And with that, a very big R.I.P. to Neil Peart, who was always such a phenomenal drummer.

Rush is the perfect example of "Progressive Rock".... A genre that focused on the TECHNICAL aspects of instruments, which is highlighted by the drums in this song as well as each artist getting a "mini-solo"..... combined with "cutting edge" electronic sounds (which is the synthesizer being added and using mixers to "bend" the notes from each instrument at times as well).
"Progressive Rock" is one of the few genres within the "Rock community" that gets a bit of a "bad reputation" due to being viewed as basically going "outside the range of instruments and cheating by distorting notes during recording". HOWEVER, on the flip side of the argument, it also brought about a TON of innovation and made the artists in the genre HIGHLY respected because of how much they "perfected" the instruments they played in order to know when/how to use the electric "bending sound".
Neil Peart is the perfect example of this. He is STILL highly respected by people in the industry NOT for being "a drummer", but a "percussionist". Meaning that it wasn't JUST the drum set that he was a master at, but ANY instrument that used the "percussion" technique. Drums, xylophone, cymbals, bells... ANYTHING that required a "striking" motion to produce sound, he worked to try and perfect it. His drum-solo's are LEGENDARY and a must see to experience the difference between "a drummer" and "a percussionist".

To answer your question about the triple-solo in this song, gotta give the edge to Peart's drums, not because he was Neil Peart (that recognition and reverence came after we memorized this album), but because those rolling-thunder fills created an absolute sensation. There were good hard rock drummers in 1981, but Peart provided the kick-your-skinny-little-a$$ edge we needed after the loss of Bonham and Moon. A new conquering hero was stomping in the sports-arenas across the lands, and he was pounding your head in with mathematical precision. He kinda became an instant hero. Btw, for most of us American pubescent kids, the album Moving Pictures and the song "Tom Sawyer" were our introduction to Rush; the influence was immense and we never recovered. 🤘

@Bisscute - I've been blessed to have followed Rush since their first album - when I was at school in my mid-teens. I grew up on a musical diet of the truly great rock bands of the late 1960s and 1970s. Rush toured the UK on numerous occasions and I got to see them live at least once on each tour. In my opinion, they are the best rock band ever. We can debate which of them is the most talented - and we'd all be right. Geddy's vocals are unique. The fact that he plays bass (brilliantly) whilst also breaking for keyboard passages (and playing a bass-line using Taurus bass pedals) is beyond amazing. Alex Lifeson has to be one of the most under-rated rock guitarists of all time. He has unbelievable phrasing and can play anything. Classical, folk, blues, country, reggae and, oh, awesome rock. Neil wrote almost all the band's lyrics. He was an original and critical thinker. He wrote books not just song lyrics. His life was turned upside down following the death of his daughter and his partner in successive years. He was a quiet and reserved person but part of one of the most successful rock bands in history. His drumming ability is legendary. Aside from Rush, he had projects paying homage to a drumming hero of his, Buddy Rich. The guy was a phenomenon. There's been debate as to who could fill Neil's shoes if Rush decided to carry on. The answer is no-one. Not because they are poor drummers but it would be like a tribute band. Who would write such lyrics? Who would blend the rock and swing influences? If you do more Rush 'reactions' try to pick some more obscure tracks. UA-cam is littered with many Rush reactions. Rush didn't chase chart success. They had very few mainstream chart hits. They were too good; too original for that. They were true to themselves, produced 20 or so diverse studio albums and played live shows the likes of which I've never seen bettered in the 50 years I've been going to gigs.

Neil was THE drummer that put the drums and percussion to the forefront of a band, just like a lead guitar and lead vocals....that is why he is considered the best rock/percussionist of all time. Just like your reaction was "I like the drumming", that is also the same reaction first time listeners have. That is just one thing of many things that made him a true music icon with mass audience appeal!

One of my personal favorite Rush songs is Armor and Sword. It's not one of their iconic staples like Tom Sawyer or YYZ but I just love it as one of their best underrated songs and it always makes me kind of emotional the way he sings it, the lyrics, and the music combined.

Biss, the beauty of Rush is that while all three are playing at the same time, the mixing is so good that no one instrument overplays the other so you can hear all three and you are right, it is as if all three are having solos. They were geniuses at allowing the sound of each instrument to be heard clearly

Closer to the heart, Freewill, Spirit of radio, Cinderella man, Limelight, Subdivisions, Time stands still, The analog kid, New world man, The Garden which was their last song on their last album. There is a great video of it live. Rush had to stop touring as drummer Neil Peart was very sick and has recently passed away from cancer. Very sad day for all music lovers. Thanks again for what you do. You are lovely, funny and cute as a bugs ear 😊

Geddy Lee the vocalist, bassist and keyboard player would play bass and keys simultaneously using foot pedals. When he needed to play a complicated piece on keys he would use the pedals on the bass line. Background keyboard parts would be played on the pedals freeing up his hands.

You were so right to say there were 3 solo's during the instrumental section. As a 3 piece this is often the case. You should listen to 'Freewill' by Rush off their 'Permanent Waves' album as that has just such an instrumental break where the 3 of them are doing amazing things solo but it all comes together for the song.

Rush was the first concert I ever attended in 2012. My dad took me to see them. Greatest day of my life. The drummer Neil Peart left such a major impact on millions of lives that we will never forget. Rush retired in 2015. He became ill but the news was hidden away from the public eye until suddenly it was announced that he passed away from a brain tumor in 2020. So many people were shocked and caught off guard by the news. My dad included who grew up listening to them. I only saw them Live one time, but I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to have such an incredible experience. RIP Neil

If you want to see the musicianship in the band, you've got to listen to their live version of Xanadu... it'll blow your mind. In this video, they show Geddy Lee as three people, as a singer, a bassist, and a keyboardist... watch them live and you'll see him do all three at once. It's crazy. My all-time favorite Rush song (and I've been listening for more years than I want to admit) is their live version of La Villa Strangiato; it's a beautiful song that tells a tale with the music alone.

The thing about Rush is that they never really *soloed* in the traditional "look at me look at me!" sense. They all had moments of allowing their phenomenal talent to shine within a song, but the playing always served the song, not vice-versa.

    1-2 1-2

    1-2, 1-2-3-4
    1-2, 1-2-3-4-5
    1-2, 1-2
    1-2, 1-2-3…
It’s magic on the drums you barely notice but it syncopates with the lyrics at just the right places. This is absolutely stupid GOOD.
