  • Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), as well as other bee balm plant species, offers us so many benefits! The gifts of bee balm include promoting digestion, helping you recover from colds and the flu, fighting fungal and yeast infections… That’s just naming a little of what bee balm can do. (Really, bee balm can be some of our most potent herbal medicine against infections and stagnant conditions.) One of my favorite ways to enjoy wild bergamot bee balm is as a tea, so I’ll be sharing my bee balm tea recipe with you as well! (Be sure to download your free, printable recipe card. You can find the link in the resources section below.)
    Speaking of bee balm tea…
    Feeling chilled? Brew a mug of bee balm tea, settle in with your favorite comfy throw, and prepare to be amazed as you sip.
    Need to treat a minor burn? Try a wash of cooled bee balm tea.
    Gut feeling heavy and uncomfortable after a meal? Say it with me… bee balm tea.
    These are just a few of the potential applications for spicy-hot bee balm tea… This episode goes into many more.
    Besides benefiting us medicinally, bee balm makes a delicious addition to many savory dishes. And to say the bee balm plant is beloved by pollinators might just be the understatement of the year.
    As you make bee balm’s acquaintance, I’m sure you’re going to fall in love with this beautiful plant, too!
    After listening in to this episode, you’ll know:
    ► Why bee balm is such a powerful, one-stop pharmacy for the cold and flu season
    ► Who should NOT take bee balm in medicinal doses
    ► Why bee balm is an herb to consider growing yourself
    ► Why taste informs how to work with bee balm
    ► When to combine taking bee balm internally with external application
    ► My favorite combination of herbs for soothing an inflamed urinary tract
    ► and much more…

    Oops! At 4:15, I accidentally said lemon balm, rather than bee balm tea. 😳 Just a slip of the tongue; bee balm tea is what I meant.

    Thank you for this tea recipe I have BeeBalm growing in my garden and I’m going to try right away. Now I don’t want to deprive the bees and hummingbirds so is okay to wait until the petals drop.

      If you harvest the flowers while the plant is still vibrant then it will regrow new flowers, often numerous ones! So by harvesting you can increase the growth of the plant. Once the plant is done flowering the taste of the plant changes significantly. I strongly prefer the taste before that stage.

    You are so right! Impossible to find Bee Balm dried herb! Easy to find seeds or even starter plants, but sadly my current location just is not conducive to any kind of gardening. Maybe someday soon!

      I understand! Here are some ways you can find herbs:
      1. Search for herbal apothecaries near you.
      2. Visit Rosalee’s listing of herb farms and wildcrafters within the US and Canada to find fresh herbs near you. www.herbalremediesadvice.org/Herb-Farms-Wildcrafters.html
      3. Visit Mountain Rose Herbs, an online apothecary that sells high quality organic herbs. They are Rosalee’s first choice for herbs she’s not able to find near her. bit.ly/2KXdWIA
      And, keep in mind thyme and oregano have quite a bit of overlap with bee balm, so you may try either or both of those wonderful herbs, as well.
      Warmly,
      Karin Rose

    Rosalee, I so value your approach in sharing this information. Reliable, experienced thorough and kind warm friendly presentation.
    I love to explore nature whereever I go..It's where my attention goes..like a bee😅🐝
    I collect leaves, flowers and herbs.
    Do you write and memorize your presentation? You do this very well. I would love to see you doing free style visits in a garden just hang out and see what happens ..Bergamot is one of my favourite scents in perfumes I recall like Aqua di Parma.. I recall it from decades ago living in London..Do you know much about perfume making?
    Enjoy your time off❤ Lia

    Informative video; thanks! I came here b/c I thought I read somewhere that this is the herb used in Earl Grey tea. I bought some of the dried herb at my local herb store. I was hoping to use it to re-create that taste as an herbal tea. It did not happen, but I learned a lot here about Wild Bee Balm. Thank you.

      On a separate note, my copy of wild remedies arrived! Now that the fires in Kelowna seem to be settling down, I look forward to have a good read! I have it packed in my bug out pile.

    Hello Rosalee - I’d like to know how you dry your herbs

    • @HerbsWithRosalee
      @HerbsWithRosalee  3 дні тому

      Hi, there are many methods to drying herbs and the best way really depends on your climate. For those of us in arid (dry) climates, it is pretty easy to lay them out in a single layer and air dry. For small pieces, a paper bag can work well. For those who live in humid climates, you may need to employ low heat. No matter how you dry your plants, keep them in the shade or inside in a darker room. Airflow helps, too.
      Cheers,
      Karin Rose

    Can you use the flower heads for anything after the petals have fallen off?

    • @HerbsWithRosalee
      @HerbsWithRosalee  3 дні тому

      Hi, we typically use herbs/plants when they are vibrant and putting their energy into the part we are harvesting. For flowers, this means harvesting and using the whole flower (or the petals, usually petals only are used in food -- not herbal medicine) when it is vibrant and just beginning to open.
      Cheers,
      Karin Rose

    My bee balm always get powdery mildew. What do you do to avoid this (besides not watering from above)?

    • @HerbsWithRosalee
      @HerbsWithRosalee  10 місяців тому +3

      Most of my powdery mildew problems went away after I stopped watering from above. Another thing you could try is getting new plants and growing them in a slight different location. Changing it up a bit may help.

    • @lourdesskidgel5597
      @lourdesskidgel5597 10 місяців тому

      @@HerbsWithRosalee I had the same question. I have both red and lavender varieties growing in my pollinator garden. I do not water from above, but am constantly dealing with powdery mildew. Neem spray helps to some extent if I catch it early and spray regularly (which I don't 🤭). I may just try growing them in a different spot. Thank you🌸
