Great video until you start talking about the range in the cost. First you’re not gonna find a brand new hybrid F150 for $35,000. Second of all the standard range battery gets 240 miles, and if you’re driving around town people routinely get 260 miles or more. More than even the cyber truck. Secondly, the extended range battery on a lightning is not that much more, especially for the new trim for 2024. In any case, I’ll lightning with an extended range. Battery is still cheaper than the Rivian.
Yeah brand new f150s are 57-70k in my area. My 23 lightning XLT was 56k. Extended range battery is 10k more. I’ve loved the lightning so far, when my lease is up, I’m excited to possibly try the Silverado EV, but the price on that is not looking promising.
Great Review! I’ve put 10k miles on my Extended Range Lariat Lightning now and absolutely love it. I came from a Model 3 Perf and MYLR prior. Our needs put us wanting a truck. Considered the Rivian but the space and vehicle to load sold me. They are both amazing trucks though. My only pet peeve on the Lightning Lariat is the larger screen and less physical controls. I wish I could have gotten the XLT screen on the Lariat. Then it would be perfect. But no other complaints. I avg 2.7 mi/kw driving in SoCal (Lake Forest) and calculated my gas equivalent to be about 48mpg which is amazing for a truck of this size. Right now the deals on 2022/2023 Lightnings are insane. Anyone in the market should def be looking at them if it fits their budget.
Thanks for this video! I am trading the Y for a standard range lightning this week! Can’t wait!, but i am a truck guy that uses trucks for work. Plus its super hard to get a sheet of plywood in the back of the Y
Really liked what you discussed in the video especially from 15:30 mins onwards. What you said about the quickest of a EV being a major selling point other than government incentives and climate action. While the Rivian is more luxurious with air suspension and tech the Lightning is nice vehicle with the V2L capabilities, cheaper msrp and very spacious interior. Tough choice but that msrp on the lightning is nice, if you can find a dealership to sell it atound that price.
Check around. I just purchased a new '22 (yes '22) Lariat Lightning with fully optioned 511A group and got $13k off MSRP + still have the $7500 tax credit coming to me. In my research I found many Ford dealers willing to discount below MSRP both '22s (if they have one) and '23s where 6 weeks or so ago, not so much.
Make sure your foot isn't holding the brake while the Rivian suspension adjusts, otherwise the suspension binds and can create the noises you are talking about. Possible its something else too tho and just needs service to look at it.
The truck part of the Ford is really good and it looks like the EV part is catching up. Roomy interior, great frunk, and a big bed. I am canceling my Cybertruck order because it does the EV part fairly well but sort of sucks as a truck. Looks like a Lightening in the near future.
100% agree. My 3rd EV (Kia EV6 & Tesla M3). I love this truck. Its use fits my life. I don't offroad or tow 10,000 lbs. The only issue I have is the standard battery. I wonder what it will be like taking a long road trip. But even if that is a problem, I may take only 2 or 3 a year. 99% of my driving needs are fully met.
@@Abebe345 probably why I cancelled my order also. It doesn’t offer anything the others don’t have plus you’re rolling around with an interior designed in 2017
Our R1S also make those clinks with the suspension. That’s just normal for Rivian. I’ve also had their loaners suv and truck and they all do that. You’d think they could figure something out to make it quieter, but it is what it is haha
FYI. the creaking you're hearing in the suspension really only happens when you are parked with brakes engaged. I think most people aren't moving suspension up and down while also parked. When you're driving it's mostly silent.
I have an F-150 lightning pro with a standard age battery. Love to have the extended range battery but it is so expensive. Would love a review and even more but it is way too expensive and there are no rivian dealerships in PA. If I could get and EV truck with 300 mi range for about 50 grand that would be perfect. I do love my F-150 pro and got it for about 50 grand (44 grand after federal tax rebate) but the standard range battery is too small for most people unless this is their second vehicle.
What’s up with the 2023’s still on the dealer’s lot? I found a nice Lariat with my specs and options. Are they budging on price? Other than heat pump and J3400 Tesla charge port, what’s the downside to a 2023?
Sadly, there’s just a lot of inventory in dealer lots, especially the further rural you go. That being said, I used that as an opportunity to get a fantastic lease deal on a ‘23 Lightning Lariat less than a month ago and those differences you listed were the only ones I found in my research as well. I think the Tesla port isn’t arriving until the ‘25 model so just the heat pump for ‘24. You should be able to get at least 10% off MSRP on Lariats. Likely even more on Platinums since it’s not a trim many feel is not worth it.
In Colorado if I drive up in the backcountry like I do with my current diesel truck, can anyone tell me how to get back to town? Where I take my truck I’ve never seen any charging stations.
My F 150 with the large battery pack has 32k on it. Driven in SoCal I’m saving nearly $1000 per month as my last truck was a 2022 Denali diesel…have a large solar system at my home and at work , charging is free. Yep free. Maintenance? Washer fluid and will need tires @40k. Love the ride and performance, software is awful but I can live with it. 100% write off for my business and a $1000 per month in savings…no down side to that.
I must be doing something wrong because I keep seeing all these videos and comments saying the ford is cheaper and that was NOT my experience when pricing them out. I compared to Lariat extended range because honestly a more fair comparison to the R1T and was consistently getting a higher MSRP and no incentives on the Ford. The Rivian was coming in in the mid-high 80s (dual motor, large pack, road wheels, upgraded paint) and the ford was about same MSRP but Rivian actually passed on incentives and had better financing and ford was coming in WAY higher on per month costs with financing or leasing.
In conclusion, Rivian definitely is still for high income people or content creators. The more videos I watch abour all these electric trucks the more I’m looking to buy F150 lighting lol cheaper and a real truck
I own a Rivian’s R1t quad motor. I actually had an order in for the lightening but I cancelled it because of the extreme mark ups. The Rivian is a superior truck in every way. The lack of range in the lightening to me is a deal breaker. A lightening Lariat with extended range will cost almost 80k. I have an early pre order price which was $71,500. Lastly the ford dealership model of selling and salespeople is a joke. No one wants to play those games. Rivian was purchased via the app no games no BS. Until ford offers direct sales they will look a lot of sales
Question on your Rivian steering wheel: In the shot at the end I noticed the stitching on the wheel looks to be pulling apart - or was that just an optical illusion?
Enjoyed the review of both trucks! Great job. I don’t get people with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I drive a 2016 Toyota 4Runner without these and my life doesn’t end. I’ve rentals with it and honestly I don’t miss it. The only thing with the F150 Lighting Ford is reducing the EV production starting this year. I’ll stick with the Rivian.

II had a F150 Powerboost. I'll keep my comments to the electric side. I had the same infotainment screen and the same shifter. I only had that truck for 6 months. I ended up hating it. Very shoddy build quality. That shifter handle has a very plasticy feeling. The shift lock button sounded like it was broken. The antenna cable for the GPS had a loose connection somewhere, so the GPS worked 50% of the time. I did not like Ford Sync. The alert tones are weird and sometimes startling. That janky tailgate step. The plastic cover became warped and would not seat flat. At some point it would have needed to be replaced. It's just Ford's cheapo match to the GMC multi tail gate. And there's the size of the truck. It was too big for a garage. I had ½ and inch to the back wall and same to the door when I put it in the garage. So, if I were to get a truck again, I would not go with the Ford. Such a terrible experience, I'll never buy a Ford again.
The problem with the Ford Lightning is that Ford can't build it at a positive gross margin. They lose something like $35,000 on every Lightning they sell. That's not sustainable, and they've been cutting production drastically because demand is drying up. It's competing with Ford's own F-150 gasser. I would choose a product that's going to be supported for a decade from a company that will be around for a decade.

F150 has the better build quality, however their software S U C K S!! I own the Mach E, the software has gotten better, but its still pretty trash. The biggest advantage to the F150, in my opinion, is the big interior size. That said, that bigger mass causes a hit to the range. I can't see anyone buying the F150 without the extended battery, the standard battery is just way too small and for some reason finding the extended range is rare on dealer lots.

Adventure hole 😭
Also you are hilarious. If you want to get trashed at a football game and drive home drunk hahahah.
Yeah, but the rivian looks nerdy
👎👎Thumbs down for this video from me. Both trucks looks great.
There’s zero excitement with electric it’s like a soulless car.
You know each is losing $35,000 - $60,000 each truck, right?
Both are loss leaders, price means nothing about what it cost to make, or is worth.
F150 Lightning is getting discontinued! Whos this video for?
This won’t age well. Not sure where you found this announced.
Lol
My wife also has an adventure hole!
How often do u get to use it
All these EV are overpriced overrated. They need to really allow the Chinese to come into the market to lower cost and push forward the range and other things
China has come into our market a bit too much so let’s not become overly dependent upon them.
@@XX-166 of course not but we need to keep pushing the big four and the Europeans and the over priced Teslas to lower their costs and improve range. Have you see the current prices for new vehicles smh
@@Sam-gs7yb you only pay those inflated prices at the stealership if you walk in as an uninformed buyer. Know your worth and stay in control of the deal and you’ll be fine and at the first sign of b.s. … WALK THE HELL OUT. You give your money to china.. they gain the market share and control.. you’ll have to decide if that’s what you want.
💙💙💙💙Lovely
You should have mentioned the level 2 BS ford put in this truck. If you try to use a level 2 and are not at your house it takes 24 hours for the app to update to let you charge at a level 2 you found. This is SO STUPID. FORD IS STUPID
Lies
I’ve never had that issue on my lightning. Not sure what your talking about 🤷♂️
