  • In this brewing video we're making a brown ale as a homage to two of our favorite beers, the Columbus Nut Brown by Columbus Brewing Company and the Face Down Brown by Telluride Brewing Company. However, the recipe is modeled off of the Moose Drool Brown Ale by Big Sky Brewing Company. Before we start brewing, we teach you about the Brown Ale style guidelines found in the book "Designing Great Beers" by Ray Daniels while we drink a Brown Ale from Hi-Wire Brewing Company called Bed of Nails. This is a perfect beer for those that don't want a lighter ale, but don't want a super dark porter or stout. A Brown Ale is a happy medium. This video also teaches you how to grind grains by walking you through double crushing, grinder gap size, and how all this impacts the efficiency of your mash. The Brown Ale recipe we created uses Pale Malt as a base along with some Black Patent Malt and Chocolate Malt for added flavor and color. We use East Kent Goldings and Willamette to give our finished beer some bitterness. This recipe pairs great with meats like venison, duck, lamb, and pork. We also announce in this video that we're selling fermentation buckets! Check out the resources below for buckets, brewing equipment, a full recipe, and an educational article about Brown Ale history.

    I brewed this beer today but scaled down to 3g, got a starting gravity of 1.060 so I guess I’ll end up with a 6% ! Tasted amazing going into the fermenter !!! I’ll chime in when it’s ready and tasted. (No buckets where used though). Skål !

    If you mix both English Ale Yeast's and American Ale Yeast's you can really get the best of both worlds when it comes to taste. :)

    I allways wonder, what part of your process would be the vorlauf? Can you get clear wort using that method?

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  5 років тому

      We don't do that, since we're using the BIAB method.

    • @shadesofgold24
      @shadesofgold24 5 років тому

      Vorlauf isn’t necessary when you recirculate the mash. The entire mash is one big vorlauf

    You guys ever run into problems using the inkbird to heat your water? I use it with a 1600 watt element to maintain temp and it works awesome but i used it once to heat my strike water and it shit out on me. Had to return it for another one. Does your version controller have a similar issue?

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  6 років тому

      Our version does not have those issues. We also have a 1 year warranty on our controllers.

    Oh. This is what brewing looks like when you are organized and your brew partner isn't a tool. It turns in circuit training when I brew as I run around like an idiot until I am done. I usually get 10000 steps in

    Shame your videos don't include a tasting as well after kegging. Also as we use Celsius over here in England can you translate farenheit for us, as it's just the touch of a button on your controller, many thanks loving the videos.
    Am just fermenting out an old fashioned English milk stout right now.

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  5 років тому

      We now include tastings at the end of every video! I think we started doing it shortly after the Brown Ale vid. Yes, good point, we can switch to celsius with the controller quickly.

      It's possible we recorded it incorrectly in the video. Much more likely that misread one of the measurements or didn't temp correct.

    I am a homebrewer.
    I brew my own beer in 23 litre batches from a kit, so I’m not a PROPER brewer.
    Until I grow my own hops.
    Until I harvest my own barley and malt it.
    Until I buy a $5000+ stainless steel brewing system with WiFi - I will just be playing at brewing.
    But in the meantime I will go down to my local homebrew shop and choose from the 180+ different beer kits and ferment it in my plastic bucket.
    Then after a few weeks I will sit down with a foaming brew and count the $5000 I saved.
    CHEERS SUCKERS !!!
