Greek and Turkish folk songs have always struck me as so similar the way they sound. Oriental. An Irani boy from London listening to a Greek song (mavra mallia) also said that it sounded like the Irani music of his father.

Couple years a go when I visited to Lesbos where my grandmother had borned, a priest realised that me is Turkish, came to next to me and talked to me in English tearfully. Before I leave from his table, he whispered to my ear that in Turkish "God is Love" Allah Aşktır. That explains & includes everything about peace, religious, friendship, humanity etc. Please just try to impose to the next generations that we are so close to each other. Turks & Greeks will be friends forever despite politicians.

Thank you so much to the person who posted this. Both my Greek Great Grandparents and Grandparents lived in Turkey until the exchange in the 1920's which was a dark time in history for many. I am grateful and happy to say my parents made it back to Greece as very young children through this troubled time. War is never good regardless of which country and at what time, it is always the innocent who suffer from all sides. Nevertheless I can see in my memory's eye, my grandmother dancing to this tune at celebratory occasions. The music and food of this region is shared and loved by both nations and in fact you can go even broader and say the music and food is also shared throughout the Mediterranean by all the nations in that region. Just a thought to note - if we go back far enough we are all related through Noah and his family or even further back to Adam and Eve. Thank you again for the memories of a very special, very much missed and very loved Grandmother. God bless you.

These songs are so much older than we know. And nobody knows if they are greek or turkish. And I say thats the best, because nobody can differ between two communities which lived together for almost 500 years. It's like there would be no turkish music without the Greek and Armenian composers.

I remember an Armenian version of the same song. Also a dialogue between a father and a daughter about who is the best suitor for her. Nice to see how the song travels from one people to next.
We are different nationalities, we just share some cultural characteristics because we have been living close for so many centuries, and all these songs are from Minor Asia where we were living together before the war. But this is a double edge sword so let's not talk about it and keep the comments as positive as possible. We did have lots of wars between us and the war turns humans into beasts, we had all been engaged into atrocities and we are all kind of mixed up but we can still have a great time together because this is what music is about. You all have to admit that We both have great songs and food guys, don't we? Is it the Mediterranean sea? Peace
+Petra Daskou I think the way to the future is to learn how to share differences and celebrate them. I think both Turkey and Greece have to be more open when it comes to the historical minorities.
Even the name Ottoman sends chills in the hearts of people of the Balkans. While it's true, Turks and Greeks have much in common, there are many ways in which Greeks are also similar to other Europeans. The Greeks are far more liberal than the Turks. That much is clear. Leftist groups are far more prominent in Greece in comparison to Turkey. Turkey is much more capitalist and religious.
Peace in the world relies on individuals findind inner peace. We do not have to hate each other. As a guy from Turkey, i love Greek people and their culture, especially Sirtaki. I have no reason to hating.

We must learn that there is much more that unites us than divides us. Let’s learn a lesson from the sad past.. live together in peace and friendship. Giorgos, Pireas, Greece.

Greek and Turkish folk songs have always struck me as so similar the way they sound. Oriental. An Irani boy from London listening to a Greek song (mavra mallia) also said that it sounded like the Irani music of his father.

Yes dude, agree. Our (Turkish ) government is corrupted as fuck. But we have really ignorant people that vote for fucking government. But we have also other half which is highly educated and did not vote for erdogan and never will. But it's too late for Turkey anymore, America and Israel succeded and they introduce us to worl as a terrorist but we lost our people every year because of terrorist. World only think how their media wanted them to think. This is very bad for Turkey and world cause they will never know what they missed after destroying Turkey.

Thanks for all this wonderful music plus fascinating comments.
