Hahahaha yes! The Visit Chandwell Tourist Board sometimes struggle to paint Chandwell in a glowing light. But they work with what they have, and they try to do a good job! :) Michael
Truly marvellous Michael, it really is. The slope on which the build sits, although slights adds so much realism. The fire exits are brilliant as well - I can almost smell the beautiful aroma inside! And the clocktower with the illumination - wow. A great video, many thanks for posting, Ian
Hahah. You really can smell those fire escapes can’t you!? I am over the moon with how well the slope worked out. It is very subtle but when you get your head right down beside it, it looks so real. Sadly the camera doesn’t pick up on it very well. Episode 3 in this series will show how I made it.
I had model railways when "I was a lad" as they say. Since then my hobbies have included sailing (mainly in the Irish Sea), large scale radio controlled aircraft, playing in several R&B groups and renovating a 19thC French farmhouse. Now happily retired I was looking for a new hobby - and was I inspired when I chanced across this video. Absolutely stunning, with attention to detail which brought back memories of building aircraft for scale competitions. So a rejuvenated hobby combined with a wonderful childhood memory. Many thanks for this and I will start watching from episode 1 for ideas and methods to build my first N Gauge train set. Brilliant. Stay safe, kind regards
@@Chandwell lol yes I did. It’s amazing. When I get the space and time for my layout I will you use your techniques the best I can. I have been in the graphic design field for 20 years and will use my own software to design my buildings in like you do in Inkscape

What a stunning build! It just looks so right and I don't think I've seen a scratchbuit station to match it -definitely exhibition quality. With the station completed, you must be nearing the end of the layout construction. Looking forward to next week and thank you for posting. Stay well.
Thank you Paul. I am really pleased with how it has turned out. I agree that it works for the feel of Chandwell. The layout is far, far, from complete. There is still a lot to do. I have a whole street of shops, a high street, the industrial buildings along the canal, the back scene behind the station, the far corner, and the houses above the tunnels yet to do. I think there is at least 6 more years of work ahead of me! Michael.
That’s some incredible work....😯 A lot of dedicated work has really paid off, very clever with the design & execution. All those details like the posters & graffiti that make it personal to you make it even more unique. Well done 👏👏🙂

My biggest regret is this layout is not going to be on the exhibition circuit - as it can stand with the best of them! Looking forward to the next part.

Thanks for a well put together video showing us how to model a station building in card. I think you might consider making the artwork available online along the lines of Scalescenes.
Since the texture is Scalescenes, I would not be able to sell that. But otherwise yes, maybe one day I could make my drawings available. There would be a heck of a lot of work to make them commercially viable though.

I have watched with great interest the creation of so many wonderful buildings and structures. However, I have many doubts about using card - simply for fear that it will warp and change colour over time. Can you allay my fears?!
Hi Antar, I can only say what my own experiences are. I started using card in Scalescenes downloadable kits in 2013 in 00 gauge. None of the kits have faded or warped despite one layout living on end in a garage and largely being a home for spiders. Chandwell is in a windowless room so it’s not a fair test but I’ve never had any issues with colours fading. I think as long as you use genuine printer ink and non cheap ink the. You should be ok. I always brush in four layers of varnish and use proper photo paper to print onto. -Michael.
Another enjoyable episode! I really appreciate your methodical approach at scratch-building structures. It has totally changed the way I look at building them. Also, your series on using Inkscape to design your building has given me tremendous insight on the use and value of this excellent software! Thanks. PS - Have you considered adding a 5-10W diode laser engraver/cutter to your tool/equipment inventory to do all of the cutting that you currently do by hand? Just curious...
Thank you! I do sometimes ponder a cutter of some type. But I have such a limited budget I can always think of a million other things I would rather have, at least while my eyesight is good, my hands are steady, and I don’t have arthritis. I do get an amazing sense of satisfaction when I remember the hours of cutting by hand when I look at the layout. I think a cutter or a 3D printer would perhaps dilute that sense of satisfaction, so for now.... I’m sticking scalpel. 😀😀👍🏻
@@Chandwell You would cut a hole through the foam and the paper veneer and then use sections of craft sticks to make the surrounds for the windows. The windows could be bought in a package where there are several sizes or they could be printed. The craft sticks around the opening for the windows could use small sections of wood that can be bought from Walmart that are 3mm thick to allow the window cladding to attach to that. The glass (thin plastic sheeting) would be attached to the back of the windows as usual.
One of the best railway station builds in my opinion and it is in N gauge, totally awesome.

I would build a structure like that one from the craft foam that is about 6mm thick and has paper veneers on the sheets.
I’ve never tried building with that Paul. I’m curious though… how would you make the windows and mount the glazing? Michael
@@Chandwell You would cut a hole through the foam and the paper veneer and then use sections of craft sticks to make the surrounds for the windows. The windows could be bought in a package where there are several sizes or they could be printed. The craft sticks around the opening for the
windows could use small sections of wood that can be bought from Walmart that are 3mm thick to allow the window cladding to attach to that. The glass (thin plastic sheeting) would be attached to the back of the windows as usual.
Impressive!
Thank you James!
