    Very elegant experiment in its simplicity. Well done! I'm convinced that angle of incidence = angle of reflectance. Very straightforward demonstration.

    Why use paper thou?? Why not panda film or a material used in a grow tent that uses white for their reflective material.

    I’ve seen another vid that proves the opposite but they used two grow tents one white ,one Mylar , the white one was better at light reflection and didn’t create hot spots in the grow space.

    We knew this over 30+ years ago. I'm so disappointed that the indoor growing hasn't changed. LED lights are the only improvement.

    I completly understand, thank you so much for this video, in over a decade of growing this is the first time i have encounted this factual info, you have a great attitude towards this and these videos help give us customers confidence in your knowledge...if this is how you work in ref to reflective materials...the lights must be on point! Thanks man!

    I’m looking to get a grow tent and I’ve been lucky enough to stumble on the thought of which reflective material is best, black dog led just released a side by side test of gorilla grow tents vs budbox and I was wondering if you could let me know if that review/test is deceptive or not.

    I think this test makes sense from a standpoint where only the walls are reflective. In such a case it would make perfect sense to want the light to be reflected in a directional fashion towards the plants.
    But what about where all reflective surfaces were covered in reflective material? In such a case the light bouncing off the surface at angles not directly in line with the plants would hit other reflective surfaces and would eventually be reflected to the plant canopy (assuming a high rate of reflectivity).
    This is the theory (at least how I understand it) behind things like matte white paint and Orca Grow Film. The whole point is to diffuse the light so that you eliminate hot spots and more evenly spread out the light/PAR.
    I’d love to see you guys do a test video where you lined the entire grow area with the diamond Mylar, Orca, matte white, and maybe one of the other brands like Panda. Then took PAR measurements throughout.
    Not saying you still might not be correct that the diamond Mylar was better, but at least that would be a more fair comparison method based on the theories behind diffuse vs specular reflective material.
    Thanks for the video.

  • @more2knowgrow472

    It would be nice to see the test from a center point. You are getting only a reflective comparison, and I think something can be said for diffusion capabilities

    • @MIGROLIGHT
      @MIGROLIGHT  7 років тому +2

      Just demonstrating the principal that supports tests that show a shiny reflective material performs best getting light down onto your grow. Diffused light is useless if lighting the top of the tent.

      @@MIGROLIGHT Hi shane now if you did the same experiment with the diamond mylar VS flat mylar the flat mylar (it will contradict you'er other tests) would be more reflective and if you put a mirror in the test that would reflect even more than paper or any of the mylar products so whats better? reflection or scatter? white is 99% reflective in All colours of the light spectrum, but defuses all that light in all direction,s "the mylar best is 97% reflective but not 100% of all colors thats why it looks gray or silver " nothing can reflect light better than white sit in a dark room with torch same size piece of white paper and same size piece of mylar and see what ilights the room up better ? ua-cam.com/video/3ijPn9PjQ90/v-deo.html and this video says white is better ua-cam.com/video/zL_yj_b-rHg/v-deo.html

    mylar coated plastic film is definitely more reflective than white paint when its new but the grow room environment degrades the mylar very quickly and so after a few months the mylar becomes almost transparent and completely ineffective as a reflector and in my experience needs to be replaced between every crop.it is much easier to apply a fresh coat of paint to the walls once a year than to replace all the mylar several times a year.so for most growers
    white paint will give you better results in the long run

    Paper allows light penetration , so the experiment results are flawed ,,, flat white painted surface would yield different results than just plain white paper

    You are comparing mylar to white paint essentially. Concentrated light is bad for the plants. You want to diffuse the light as to avoid hotspots which can damage the plants, especially young seedlings.

    • @MIGROLIGHT
      @MIGROLIGHT  6 років тому +1

      I'm afraid we have to disagree. Just use the diamond Mylar to avoid hot spots. Silver mylar is more effective email than white in all tests we've done, even with orca grow

      MIGRO how about white Orca paper that is supposed to be far superior than white paint on a wall. What are your thoughts on the white Orca paper if you have ever used it? It's rather expensive that I do know as I've gotten 75 feet of it in the past and I've seen it to be better than the mylar that I have inside my tents.

    • @Hot_Topic
      @Hot_Topic 6 років тому +4

      Agreed, concentrated light IS what causes hot spots. I think we could all agree Mylar is better and more reflective than just white though. I don't think the results of this test tell us how much it is better though because of using white paper as comparison.
      White paper is not the same as white paint or other white surface. No one uses paper to reflect light and paper is different in texture, brightness and how much light actually passes through the paper instead of reflected. White surfaces of other materials and textures would give somewhat of a different result I believe.
      Having said that, it is a good demonstration on why Mylar is better and I surely respect and appreciate the info in this video.

      Seems to me that this video demonstrates exactly what everybody says about mylar is that it creates hotspots. It is well known that white reflects light the best

    How about the specially-designed Orca paper which is I believe 11 layers thick and somewhere around 11 ml thick as well. It reflects light like snow I've used it for a couple years inside my vegetation grow room and when you put the light on a wall you cannot see where the light comes out on the wall but if you put the same light against the mylar you can see the actual reflection of the light in the mylar where it's diffused in the Orca paper. What's your thoughts on Orca paper if you have any experience with it?

    • @MIGROLIGHT
      @MIGROLIGHT  6 років тому +1

      There is a previous video that tests orca. Basically it doesn't work as well as silver mylar. There is another video and blog on the website explaining why. Thanks for the comment

      MIGRO well that's reassuring that the cheaper material works better than the expensive Orca paper and I'm a bit embarrassed that I bought the 25 and then it $54 of it thinking it was better than the mylar. Thank you for updating me, and I will look around for the Orca paper blog you're talking about.

      orca film company is known to film live demonstrations at expos using their Orca grow film in a side by side comparison to diamond reflective Mylar grow film.... in the youtube videos it looks legit, but i saw their booth at MJBizCon and they had the mylar diamond reflector material UPSIDE DOWN to send light back upwards, away from their PAR meters
      i pointed it out to the rep there and he said i was wrong, that the mylar reflective diamond material could face any direction and still reflect light. i tried explaining to him that the indentations made are directional, and that they have installed it upside down so the light goes UP and he just ignored me and started talking to someone else
      Orca is a totally sketchy company
