Hey Dave! Thank you for this post. I got my Kronos 2 around December 2016 and yesterday I upgraded to the new OS (3.1.0). Your video is easy to understand and I know many of us really appreciate your expertise. I wish someone would make more easily understood Kronos 2 videos like you have provided. I've heard there may be a 3 year learning curve to master the Kronos 2, I sincerely hope not! But videos like yours give hope to those of us who want to learn. Thank you!
Thanks Andy! 3 years? I'd suspect longer. I've been working with the Kronos for about 2 years now, and there's no way I could learn everything left to learn in the next year. I mean, basic programming sure, but when you get into each engine having it's own nuances, (and there's 9 of them) and then the additional programming functionality, and then there's wave sequencing, and then KARMA on it's own needs almost a PhD, then there's sequencing, DAW integration... There's a lot more to it I'm afraid. That said, the MAIN things that will help you be functional, you can definitely learn within a year. Heck, getting good at it could take 6 months to get the basics for everything and then you can focus in on a specific area that interests you.
Hey Dave! I'm hoping you can advise all of us how to locate and download the updated PDF manual related to this new v3.1.0 Quick Layer/Split feature for Kronos. I have tried to locate a link but haven't found one yet. Your videos are Great! I really appreciate the time you took to help all of us! Thank You!
Thanks a lot for your good workarround! Just bought me a Kronos and coming from a Roland and Yamaha this makes it less complicated to learn the Karg language! There are a lot of unnecessary difficult video’s to be found! Great work!
Great video. This seems like a very useful feature, as I live in Combi mode for weekly live gigging. It seems like it would be a nice timesaver for when the worship leader wants a simple demo or simple combi, as most of mine are fairly complex (I hate cycling patches mid-song, so I spend a lot of time programming each song as a single combi via multiple splits and layers, also enabling quick recall of old songs when we rehash old material). Good job capturing a bug on video, too!
Thanks! Very nice video & easy to follow and understand, which isn't too common in Kronos Land. Just installed 3.1.2 which hopefully addresses the bug you exposed in this video.
Kronos is just an amazing machine. Ive had it for a year and a half. Its limitless for me. More than enough. I would probably get the korg collection software just to have different old school type sounds and maybe the roland module that has all the expansion cards built in.
I wonder if this update shaved off any more of the boot up time? The earlier update made the boot up time about 25 seconds quicker.I noticed some Kronos users were modifying their Korg's with new hardware to make it faster, but doesn't that void the manufacturer's warranty?Well...anyway...after many years of contemplation,I chose to go the Krome route, because the Krome's boot up time is tolerable(57 seconds) and I wouldn't have to worry about the OS crashing,as there is no way to overload the Krome(my old M3 crashed, due to the f**king Xpanded USB stick) and I love the simplicity of it.For the time being, the Krome is ideal(until such time Korg decides to progress past the dark ages and incorporates FLASH memory in their next workstation....whenever the bloody hell that happens!)
Walter Moss You have to be running 3.1.0 or newer to have the quick split feature yes, but you can always manually create splits in Combi mode as well.
The cutoff is a function of a filter which is dependent on the oscillator of one of the layers. There are certain things that are suited for Combi mode, and some edits and assignments that can only happen in program mode for individual sounds. You could go into the program and assign the filter cutoff to a specific controller, and that would work but it's not a layer/Combi function. It's a little more complicated than that.
@@AudoraAudio Hi Dave thx for all your efforts. I am having the opposite issue to Tymek - I'm trying to apply the sustain pedal to BOTH parts of the split, but it appears to default to sustain on the "Main" part only. Have you found a way of doing this easily, or is this another "filter cutoff to a specific controller" type thing?
@@777CCT You need to save the split as a combination, and go to the midi/filter tab which has the sustain pedal filter on the second layer. It's a checkbox that shows what's 'allowed'. I don't recall if there's a quick way to adjust that from the quick split screen as I tend to make my combinations from scratch. (There's just more control that way)
Good stuff - I just always wish a minute's more attention would be given to choosing a drum pattern besides the one(s) assigned to programs or combis. If you gig live in small club, restaurant, party situations where you want or need to cover the drum parts...you know...finding, choosing, setting tempos, saving, etc. the right PATTERNS is critical. Any help out there?
Real nice. ? for you, I can easily do a 2 sound split starting with this tutorial so thanks. I tried introducing a 3rd sound though. Seemed that I set everything up properly, created an additional split range, made the 3rd sound active in the menu, selected the sound but that 3rd range had no sound coming out of it. The first 2 from the original splits sounded fine. Any idea?
Wait a minute, that's not good, that the functions are not possible anymore, how come ??? I have that sometimes, but i dont have this quick layer and split. So Korg What is happenings when he freezes.
Without more information, there's not much I can do to help unfortunately. I'd recommend checking out or posting on the Korg forums: korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/index.php There's a section dedicated to the Kronos - in there you could ask your question but you'll need to include the steps you're taking in more detail so they can help.
mmmmmmmmmmmmm i had same problem, have you installed any usb thumb drives into its internal computer slots, if so , take them out then try again doing the upgrade then it shoul work, worked for me, then put your usb drives back in, [ also dont have a usb drive pluged into 2nd exsternal port iether, it appears that the kronos doesnt know how to find and load the os upgrade, if multiple drives are inserted hope that solves the problem, ok cheers
Hey David, I had a question about general live performance set up: I'm looking to perform my own songs as full arrangements, by myself, using the Kronos. What are the most essential features to learn? I just purchased the Kronos in October, and between KARMA and RPPR and God knows what else, I don't know which way is up. Your videos have been a great resource, by the way, keep emailing coming!
Danny Figueredo Depending on the songs? Get a second foot pedal that you can use to jump from one sound to another in Setlist mode. Second, discover setlist mode and how to make things happen in there. Finally, making basic combis (assigning effects, adjusting volumes, and layering sounds / making splits) From a performance aspect, those are the biggest / most important things you will use on a regular basis. After that, then you start looking into programming your own sounds to put into combis when the sounds given by korg don't quite work right. Give that a start, and I have videos that talk about the main top 3 or 4 things mentioned above. Let me know if you have questions.
Walter Moss 3.1.2 is the system version. It's a free download from Korg. Go to their website and look for system updates 3.1.2 and you should find it. A Google search for the same thing should help too
I'm not sure but i don't think this has anything to do with the system update. My Kronos froze a while ago and it had system version 3.0.4 at that time.
CL-Projects I've been following on the forums, and I'm not the only one who has been able to find ways and make the Kronos crash with the new update directly related to how things like KARMA is handled and such. Anecdotally, I've got 2 Kronos boards, and both on 3.0.4 and never had a problem with either despite thousands of hours of operation.
it just wont boot up bro...i just had it for a year and a half.what makes me disappointed is from where i am now there is no korg service center.so im stuck ..anyways i had all usb removed still not working....anything in mind?tnx for ur time really appreciate.
www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ There's a bunch of very helpful people here, I'd recommend checking out that forum. Other people have had similar issues in the past, so if you search on the same problem you're having, they might have solutions as well that would work for you.

If you change parameters too fast it will freeze. All versions do this. Processor is too slow. Korg should focus more on this issue than cosmetics. Organs still suck.

How can I record using Kronos2?
And how can you store it in Kronos2?
