      I'm in the planning stages of doing the same thing. I just want Rabbits for their manure. I want them to live a long, happy, natural, and healthy life on pasture and use their manure for my garden. How many acres per rabbit (or rabbits per acre) can I sustainably keep?

    As much as I love rabbits I have realized the need to raise them for food. as long as they have a good life, and a quick end. still sad since they're adorable and loving creatures

    I have 25 rabbits and would love to know more about how to feed them from nature. Unfortunately I don’t know much about plants and trees 😟 I also have a question 🙋‍♀️ I had read so many conflicting do’s and don’ts on feeding rabbits. I read they can’t have any fruit that has a pit or stone and then I see others say they can eat peaches and plums… I also read they should even have the branches from those trees either 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m so confused ! What is the right answer?

    • @ForgingFreedomTV
      @ForgingFreedomTV  2 роки тому +1

      Just think about this: If a rabbit is running around on its own, it has access to absolutely everything. It eats what it wants. I wouldn’t feed them a pile of peaches, but 1/2 of a peach is probably not going to hurt them. Just make sure you are giving them a variety. They usually won’t eat what is bad for them as long as they’re not starving

      Hay is important for rabbits! It keeps them healthy and wear their teeth down. Otherwise you’ll have to pay hundreds of dollars to the vet to grind their teeth down every 4 months. I made the same mistake. Please please don’t replace hay.

      Good for you! Hay is nothing more than dried plants. Good for winter feeding, but when you've got fresh, that's what they prefer and would be eating if they were running around wild and unsupervised.

    I live in the suburbs in Australia and i go out foraging on the grass in my front yard every morning for dandelion & grass.
    I wonder if you can dehydrate the yellowdock plant and save it for when there's not much of it around.
    We are looking to go on property, so foraging like what you are doing is exactly what I will do..... wanting to live self sustainably .

    • @desertedenblooms
      @desertedenblooms 2 роки тому +1

      Yes you can dehydrate anything but it must be done slowly and not at high temps. Preferable in a shade or sunless spot hanging upside down as to know kill the nutrients. You can also chop it up a long with other favorite herbs and dandy lions and berries, put in ice tray and give it to them for a cooling summer snack or allow it to melt and give as a water soup mix. Make a dry treat for them with some banana as binder...just beware of the sugar in fruits, even good berries have a sugar ...

    • @ForgingFreedomTV
      @ForgingFreedomTV  Рік тому

      It’s my understanding that the pit of those fruits has a small amount of arsenic in it, but I don’t feed them the pits or the fruit. Just the wood. Think about it this way, a peach tree or an apple tree dies and falls over in the forest. Rabbits come along and eat the branches. It’s like that with a lot of things. You just don’t want to overfeed them any one thing. I’ve been doing it for years and haven’t had any trouble

    • @ForgingFreedomTV
      @ForgingFreedomTV  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but you can feed either fresh or dried. Drying just preserves it so you can feed at a later date, such as in the Winter. Best to dry it slowly in a shady place so it retains its green color and all of the nutrients.

Around here we have to feed pellets at least in the winter, because there’s usually three or 4 feet of snow on the ground. Pellets are just a lot more convenient for getting the chores done quickly when it’s -10 outside

    Do rabbits eat French sorrel

    • @zone4garlicfarm
      @zone4garlicfarm 3 роки тому

      Probably not. Sorrel has oxalic acid. Lambs quarters and other plants with high amounts of oxalic acid are toxic to rabbits. I would expect the same with sorrel.

    • @ForgingFreedomTV
      @ForgingFreedomTV  2 роки тому

      I feed my rabbits Lambs Quarters all the time with no negative results. You can learn a lot from nature and when I saw the wild rabbits coming around and eating the lamb's quarters, I figured that was good enough for me. I think the key is everything in moderation. In other words you would not want to feed them a straight diet of one particular plant. Varying their diet seems to be the key.
