The fancy presentations are nice when you are able to do them (Personally, I prefer lectures by your real-self rather than the cartoon guy. He's a bit distracting), but your lessons and explanations are so well presented they don't require a lot of fancy graphics and fillers to keep my attention or to get the point across. I'm sure it takes quite a bit of time for you to prepare and post these lessons so, I very much appreciate them and hope you will continue.

@@jenianydots2 They are the same, but "bastante" is simpler. Both are adverbs, they serve to qualify a verb ("corre suficientemente rápido") or an adjective ("está suficientemente lleno"). You can consider "suficientemente" like a bit more formal, but they are equivalent. I'm a native Spanish speaker.

Yes, but to avoid cobfusion use it with lo also: lo bastante bien. The reason is that María cocina bastante bien can mean Maria cools quite well. If you want to stress well enough, use lo bastante.

Me gusta mucho este video. Me parece que no es lo suficientemente bueno como para aprender esta construcción solo una vez. Creo que se debe repasar muchas veces por flashcards como Anki con ejemplos en contexto. Debería hacerse como para que se pueda recordar estas frases en una semana, un mes y un año. It seems to me that isn't good enough to learn this construction only once. I think that one should review many times through flashcards like Anki with examples in context. It should be done so that one can remember these phrases in one week, one month and one year. I do appreciate corrections if you have a few moments.
Just one small correction - buena* rather than bien. “Fue buena” translates to “it was good”. If you said “me fue lo suficientemente bien”, then it would make sense again, since that translates to “it went well enough for me.” Usually (but not always) bien is an adverb paired with actions or describing a condition with “estar”, while bueno/buena is an adjective used to describe with “ser.”

Every time I watch one of your videos, I come out not only impressed at how my beginner-intermediate Spanish is improving, but with what useful tips I get from you hassle free. Even the complicated constructions here gave me no problems.

Really great lesson, thank you! I have a tangential question regarding the reference to spanish, or any language. Is it not true that in most languages, including Spanish one refers to the language as "the (insert language here). Like "El Español es muy facíl estudiando con Paul." Or, "Paul enseña muy bien el Español." We don't do that in English. Is it situational? Often overlooked in Mexican vernacular? I'm only asking because I was having a conversation with myself (in Spanish) about this just a day or so ago so it's fresh in my mind. :) TIA if you get around to answering this.
Great video, but was confused why in the sentence construction about “your son should speak Spanish well enough…” you use present subjunctive after the “como para que” structure since you used conditional in your principal phrase I.e., “debería “. Shouldn’t you have used imperfect subjunctive I.e., “pudieran” and not “puedan”. Thanks
You have a detailed eye for language. We often use the conditional of deber (debería) in sentences talking about the present or future. If the nothing in the rest of the sentence would indicate the past, the present subjunctive can be used. That sentence was actually taken from a Spanish-language site. For example, my wife might say to me -- Deberías sacar la basura antes de que llueva.
I use your videos... in order to learn English!. It's something like 'reverse learning', and I think it works pretty fine for me. Nice video as always, and I think your personality or way to do things is a big part of it. Regarding this video I can say that 'lo suficientemente' is perfectly correct, but it's way more common, at least in Spain, to use 'lo bastante'. It means the same, but 'lo bastante' is shorter and easier to say. If you say 'lo suficientemente' five times in a row you need to take a breath!! ;) it's a super long word and hard to pronounce even for us. 'Lo bastante' does the same role, and it's way more economical.
Before I would translate every word in the sentence to try and understand it, which brought much of my frustration to learning Spanish, but this lesson has given me more clarity by learning those little chunks. Great lesson, short but powerfully packed!
As always a brilliant lesson although I think this one was particularly special because it worked through examples, easy to difficult, so methodically. Could I please ask a question about the sentence in the last section re subjunctive? In the sentence 'At 3 yrs of age your son should speak well enough so adults can understand the majority of what they say.' I understand that como para que triggers the subjunctive in the verb that follows ie puedan but why is dice not diga. Perhaps I've got it wrong but thought that, once triggered, all the verbs therrafter were in the subjunctive? An explanation would be appreciated. Please keep these marvellous videos coming. Hi Barbara. That one actually came from an article I found online. You're right that you will often see that type of construction in the subjunctive, but not always. The difference is like this: ....la mayor parte de lo que dice. The majority of what he/she says. ...la mayor parte de lo que diga. The majority of whatever he/she says. Similar too: Puedes hacer lo que quieres. -You can do what you want. Puedes hacer lo que quieras.- You can do whatever you want.
Sensibly, you begin teaching Spanish with cognate tricks. However, as most of us know, there are those "false friend" traps. I suspect people who know about those traps have learned about the dangers of "embarazada" (inadvertently hilarious). Would a lesson on some of the other false cognates make sense? It certainly could be fun! ;-)
Paul, I have been studying Spanish for years and am considered to be fluent, but you are answering questions for me that native Spanish speakers just don’t or can’t address and I appreciate it enormously. I am wondering why it was necessary to use the conditional tense of deber in the example about the child at 3, who should speak well enough to be understood by adults. The would/ought to combo confuses me. If you or anyone else can clarify this for me, I would be very grateful.
Hi Kathylee. Thanks for watching. That example came from an article online, but I can tell you that when you use the conditional, you are not saying that it must happen -- but that "ideally" that should happen. It is also a common way to offer advice. Using the present tense would be like saying "it must happen". I should do a video on these nuances.

Awesome lesson, I get so much out of these, it feels like I’m cheating. I’ve wanted a better way to say “I speak ‘a little’ Spanish” to not oversell what I can do conversationally, and this construction works perfectly

It is just a set phrase. You have to resist the temptation to break it down. There are times when suficientemente can appear without LO, but in this type of construction, get in the habit of popping it in there.
This was very interesting. I learned a few new words along with the construction. I really appreciate understanding the "volver + a + verb" usage also.

this lesson had lots of learning and was incredible! I would prefer you spend less time set up w the cartoon and the blackboard etc and just spit out knowledge . You dont even need time w introduction , just put out content that is easier to put out yet keep throwing out facts
That sometimes happens when I do simultaenous translations. I will translate literally from Spanish to English and the English will sound awkward. In this case, I didn't even notice I had done it until I was editing it. The funny thing is that I don't do it in Spanish.

You will hear suficientemente used without the "lo" also with the same meaning. Some native speakers will say they are identical and some will say to include the LO when during formal writing. In formal documents and newspapers, the LO is more often included.

Pienso que ambas lenguas deberían ser más amigables la una con la otra, y también disminuir la histórica antipatía cultural entre nuestros países. You can say the same thing with lo bastante. Bastante by itself is often more like "quite" so the LO is often added to mean enough- La bañera es bastante grande. The tub is quite large. La bañera es lo bastante grande. The tub is big enough (for something). para dos personas etc. In many areas, bastante is primarily used for the first meaning and not the second so lo suficientemente will be more common. I googled both in quotes- lo bastante 3,590,000 lo suficientemente 42,300,000 That is a good indication of just how much more widely used lo suficientemente is.

I made it DICE becuse it was referring to "your child" in singular. I debated on that one a bit myself...lol.

We use como para in English. We say "as to" (are you good enough at driving "As To/como para" parallel park a trailer truck?)

You have a detailed eye for language. We often use the conditional of deber (debería) in sentences talking about the present or future. If the nothing in the rest of the sentence would indicate the past, the present subjunctive can be used. That sentence was actually taken from a Spanish-language site.
For example, my wife might say to me -- Deberías sacar la basura antes de que llueva.
I use your videos... in order to learn English!. It's something like 'reverse learning', and I think it works pretty fine for me.

Regarding this video I can say that 'lo suficientemente' is perfectly correct, but it's way more common, at least in Spain, to use 'lo bastante'.
It means the same, but 'lo bastante' is shorter and easier to say.
If you say 'lo suficientemente' five times in a row you need to take a breath!! ;) it's a super long word and hard to pronounce even for us.
'Lo bastante' does the same role, and it's way more economical.

Before I would translate every word in the sentence to try and understand it, which brought much of my frustration to learning Spanish, but this lesson has given me more clarity by learning those little chunks. Great lesson, short but powerfully packed!

As always a brilliant lesson although I think this one was particularly special because it worked through examples, easy to difficult, so methodically. Could I please ask a question about the sentence in the last section re subjunctive? In the sentence 'At 3 yrs of age your son should speak well enough so adults can understand the majority of what they say.' I understand that como para que triggers the subjunctive in the verb that follows ie puedan but why is dice not diga. Perhaps I've got it wrong but thought that, once triggered, all the verbs therrafter were in the subjunctive? An explanation would be appreciated. Please keep these marvellous videos coming. Hi Barbara. That one actually came from an article I found online. You're right that you will often see that type of construction in the subjunctive, but not always. The difference is like this:
....la mayor parte de lo que dice. The majority of what he/she says.
...la mayor parte de lo que diga. The majority of whatever he/she says.
Similar too:
Puedes hacer lo que quieres. -You can do what you want.
Puedes hacer lo que quieras.- You can do whatever you want.
Sensibly, you begin teaching Spanish with cognate tricks. However, as most of us know, there are those "false friend" traps. I suspect people who know about those traps have learned about the dangers of "embarazada" (inadvertently hilarious). Would a lesson on some of the other false cognates make sense? It certainly could be fun! ;-)

Paul, I have been studying Spanish for years and am considered to be fluent, but you are answering questions for me that native Spanish speakers just don’t or can’t address and I appreciate it enormously. I am wondering why it was necessary to use the conditional tense of deber in the example about the child at 3, who should speak well enough to be understood by adults. The would/ought to combo confuses me. If you or anyone else can clarify this for me, I would be very grateful.

That example came from an article online, but I can tell you that when you use the conditional, you are not saying that it must happen -- but that "ideally" that should happen. It is also a common way to offer advice. Using the present tense would be like saying "it must happen". I should do a video on these nuances.

It really refers to any child, not necessarily a son, that's why I went with they at the end. Hijo could be son or child if gender is unspecified.
¿Considerarías mal que usé diga? "A la edad de tres años, su hijo debería hablar lo suficientemente bien como para que los adultos puedan entender la mayor parte de lo que diga".
Esa frase provino de un artículo que encontré en Internet. "Diga" también me suena bien. Sólo hay una sutil distinción entre las dos formas en este contexto. (dice - what he/she says; diga - whatever he/she says)

Why the "lo"?? To my English brain, suficientemente should slide right into where "sufficiently" is.
It is just a set phrase. You have to resist the temptation to break it down. There are times when suficientemente can appear without LO, but in this type of construction, get in the habit of popping it in there.

That sometimes happens when I do simultaenous translations. I will translate literally from Spanish to English and the English will sound awkward. In this case, I didn't even notice I had done it until I was editing it. The funny thing is that I don't do it in Spanish.

You will hear suficientemente used without the "lo" also with the same meaning. Some native speakers will say they are identical and some will say to include the LO when during formal writing. In formal documents and newspapers, the LO is more often included.

Pienso que ambas lenguas deberían ser más amigables la una con la otra, y también disminuir la histórica antipatía cultural entre nuestros países. Le leido mucho la historia de los EEUU y admiro ese país. Mucha gente en LaTAM odia los EEUU, y allá también hay gente que nos odia a nosotros. No es correcto, ambos están equivocados. Creo que es más que todo por la ignorancia, el mal de los pueblos. Gente que no es consciente que el mundo existe más allá de sus propios países. La labor que haces es muy buena, y sigue adelante.

What is the difference between this and bastante?
You can say the same thing with lo bastante. Bastante by itself is often more like "quite" so the LO is often added to mean enough-
La bañera es bastante grande. The tub is quite large.
La bañera es lo bastante grande. The tub is big enough (for something). para dos personas etc.
In many areas, bastante is primarily used for the first meaning and not the second so lo suficientemente will be more common. I googled both in quotes-
lo bastante 3,590,000
lo suficientemente 42,300,000
That is a good indication of just how much more widely used lo suficientemente is.
