  • In this video I am showing how to winterize my underground sprinkler system. This is very easy to do and you really do not need to pay someone to do this for you.

    Connor, I bought a new controller this past summer made by Orbit that is Wifi. Its called b-hyve. You can program the system from your phone and turn your sprinklers on manually which is really nice when blowing out the lines in the winter. You don't have to keep going back to the controller to change zones. It also gives you weather updates for the area you live in. I love it.

      @@@leopeyr313 Where in Australia do you live? I live in Melbourne. We're experiencing unseasonably warm weather and little rainfall. I'm seeing a lot of dried out, brown lawns that have been cut very short (some almost down to dirt level). I irrigate my lawn and after a top dressing and fertilising earlier in the spring it's looking healthy and green. I do get criticism from environmental activists telling me that by irrigating my lawn, what I am doing is wrong & immoral. I have to educate people that grass is water efficient in converting CO2 to Oxygen, prevents soil erosion and soil fertility loss, prevents establishment of environmental weeds, provides a visual and recreational amenity and that beneath the lawn there is a living microenvironment teeming with a diversity of life - microbial & insect.

    Connor, you forgot a step!!! You need to open the drains on the Backflow Preventer to blow the water out of that too. Failing to do so can cause the most expensive repair job because not only is the backflow preventer about $140, but it requires plumbing to remove the broken one and install the new one, which usually means a plumber has to do it.

    • @buckhorncortez
      @buckhorncortez 5 років тому

      Depends upon how the irrigation system is designed. Where I live, by building code, the backflow preventer has to be dedicated to the irrigation system and at least 18-inches above the ground. The preventer is on the incoming water supply in front of the valve box, and attached using pipe unions. When you drain the irrigation system, the backflow preventer automatically drains. You don't need a plumber to change the backflow preventer unless you don't understand how pipe unions work.

    • @curtmorehouse1
      @curtmorehouse1 5 років тому

      Buckhorn Cortez my point was to avoid having to change the backflow preventer in the first place, by simply blowing it out. Connor did not even mention the backflow preventer. Even if you don’t blow it out, it should at least be mentioned that the drain screws should be opened.

    Thanks for the video. My winterization procedure has always been to simply turn off the main water source to the yard and then I turn four screws located in a green box in the ground about 90 degrees to open them up (not sure what those four screws are called) but after I turn them, water starts draining from them.
    I'm going to go look to see if I have an air compressor connection somewhere and see if I can blow them out like you did.

    Connor, please stop charging your irrigation lines with air with the valves closed. If you need to recharge your air compressor close the outlet valve at the compressor leaving the irrigation valve open, once the air is charged back up then you can open up the air compressor's outlet valve. Also, folks do not blow out through your backflow always make the connect after the backflow check valves.

    • @Young_Star
      @Young_Star 5 років тому

      Why wouldn't you want to pressurize the lines all the way up to the zone valves? That is essentially more compressed air being stored in the lines and not just in the compressor tank alone. Since his compressor tank isn't that big it helps to use the pipes to increase the volume of compressed air.

    • @Techmatt167Official
      @Techmatt167Official 5 років тому

      TheWolf a compressor like that will work. It’ll push all the water out. But not all of it. The water that remains sits at the bottom of the pipe. It may freeze but it has room to expand so the pipe doesn’t break

    • @JoeEinMinne
      @JoeEinMinne 5 років тому

      Agreed with TheWolf... it's not the pressure, its the volume. That little compressor will be taxed pretty hard to keep up producing enough air - the motor simply will burn out faster, that's the real risk. Around my neighborhood, you can get your blow-down done for $50 or so. They bring a trailer-mounted compressor that can run at 40psi constant and have plenty of volume. Also, going higher pressure than 40-50psi or running too long at high volume or pressure can start to melt the gears in rotor heads. They rely on the water to keep "lubricated" and cool. Also, you skipped blowing out the backflow preventer/checkvalve etc. Be careful going too high pressure-wise through the backflow. There's a rubber diaphragm in there that flaps around and once brittle due to age, will tear under air pressure that is too high. Not super hard to replace it but why wreck it by being too eager with the tool pressure knob on your compressor? Sorry for so many edits/follow-ons... just passing along info from my experience working on sprinklers both in my own yard, and all over the golf course I worked at in high-school/college. One last thought - some compressors really heat the air up as it is compressed... they air can get too hot and soften/weaken plastic fittings/tubes. Take a spin through some of the DIY pages dealing with guys that plumb their garage air with pvc... No sense in blowing up your underground pipes!

  • @mkzenthusiasts
    @mkzenthusiasts 5 років тому

    Ok why would you THUMB this video down? Sorry bud i cancelled you out

  • @BLS2008
    @BLS2008 5 років тому

    Please don’t encourage the use of such a small compressor. Yes it may work for you now, but you got lucky. You have plenty of pressure, but no volume of air. You need at least 20cfm to blow out a small system. More if it’s larger. The air will simply glide over the water in the pipes at lower CFMs. Any low heads and the water will collect there and freeze. Pipes too. If there’s any water remaining in the line (and there will be with that compressor) you’re just asking for trouble. If you’re going to encourage people to blow out their lines themselves than fine. But don’t show them how to do it the wrong way. Use a pull behind compressor. You can rent them for a reasonable price. I’m not trying to diss DIY. Aside from being an irrigation contractor, I am extremely DIY in all aspects of my home, but you gotta get projects done right to save headaches down the road bruh.
