- ✤✤ Welcome to “TDubs Outdoors”
In this short clip, I was so focused on the tree branch ahead of my kayak that I didn't even notice I had two visitors sneaking up on me. Manatees are awesome and many times curious, but remember to respect them, give them their space and don't touch them. Manatees can move freely through saltwater, brackish and freshwater. These two manatees were encountered in completely freshwater.

I’d have to imagine that’s best case scenario for something in Florida stalking you
That's a great point 😂. I agree!
@@tdubsoutdoors quick question how did they get in the river because as far I knew they should be In the ocean not in a river in the middle of Florida
@@masterassassinaltairibn-la4698they be glidin’
Floriduh!
@@masterassassinaltairibn-la4698 They swam up from the sea.
@@masterassassinaltairibn-la4698 it's a manatee that lives in the fresh waters of Florida and canals along with gators
Count your blessings AND thank God they weren't a pair of equally big Alligators
gators would be more interested in stealing his fish the moment he hooks it. they all do that lol
@@marcusbullock630 From what I understand, alligators don't normally have any interest in anything as large as people. Not that I'd care to test out that idea as they are rather large, can move rather fast and do occasionally kill people.
Gators never attack humans. It's so rare. You're thinking crocs.
@@marcusbullock630 that's the truth for sure! Ive had a ton of gator encounters and never anything really aggressive but when there is a fish in the mix, that completely changes things. I'm really careful when reeling things in! You are 💯 percent correct!
@@SmallSpoonBrigade that's exactly right and for the most part they just want to avoid you. I've never had a bad encounter but I do think about it and take all the precautions I can
Had a Manatee by the boat for 45 minutes wanting to be petted then rolled over wanting it's belly scratched, like a big ole dog. I'll never forget.
I had that happen once. Literally look down as it popped up right beside the yak and spooked the crap out of me lol.
@@tdubsoutdoors I saw the "Manatee wake" and snapped my fingers under water to attract it to the boat. Scratched it's nose and under the chin. That's when it rolled over 😀
Your kayak might look like a fellow manatee, from underwater and at a distance. They probably wanted to say hello.
They were very curious
Unlikely, that they mistook the Kayak I mean. Surprising number of marine mammals are simply curious.
Oh thank goodness it’s a manatee.
Totally agree and thank you! If it was an alligator I'd be running up the bank lol
At first i thought they were alligators and im thinking you have to be crazy or stupid to be in a boat that small with alligators on those waters instead it turns out they were manatees which is by far the best case scenario here
No gators thankful for that, but it is Florida and the gators are everywhere in the state, so you have to get used to that, if your going to do much freshwater kayak fishing. In 12 years I've never really had any trouble, but I'd be straight up lying if I said it didn't enter my mind
@tdubsoutdoors I'm from NYC so we don't worry about alligators here but I wouldn't chance kayaking in Florida waters I get most of the time they don't bother you but just like sharks you never know if you will encounter that 1 gator that's hungry or just plain aggressive
@@davescire3004 I get that completely and ultimately your right. It is always in the back of my mind for sure. I just take as many precautions as I can. Ive fished my whole life up north and never had to worry about them. Definitely something you have to take into account down here for sure.
@@davescire3004 Everybody knows the gators in NY sewers are absolutely huge.
@tdubsoutdoors I hear ya I guess when you live in Florida you're uses to gators and you still go about your day I personally love gators but they're also much more dangerous in water then on land but at the end of the day you just have to live your life take precautions and go about your day
I used to go to Crystal River every February to see some manatees with my kids and they are beautiful creatures, most of the time the mothers will swim by us with their babies, it’s so cute
Manatees are really cool! My kids love to see them as well!
beautiful manatees!!!!
They are beautiful creatures!
I've seen better
They were gorgeous
@@unoriginalname4321 What do you mean? Have you seen better manatees, better fishing, better water, WHAT. Let the man enjoy his moment with a couple of passing manatees without you being such a jerk😠🙄
@@unoriginalname4321Your mom? 😂
Your video title led me to believe you were talking about the game wardens ....
😂 I didn't think of that
I thought they were alligators about to tag team you. 😂
Id been paddling as fast as I could have!!
a blessing of a moment
It was definitely that. I surely didnt expect to see them so far up the river, but I'm glad I did!
They’re cows. No sneaking. Just grazing
And being curious
Just shows how the rivers etc need to be clean, free from industrial waste etc for these beautiful creatures to survive.
Whoa! At first, I thought they were sturgeon! Where I live, they're catch-and-release, and they get used to having people reel them in just to pet them and let them go again. It's almost a rite-of-passage with some of the younger folk.
Just beautiful...
I wish! One of these days I love to see a huge wild sturgeon, that's for sure!
@@tdubsoutdoors Come to the Fraser River Valley in British Columbia! That's about sixty-ish miles east of Vancouver...
Manatees! How awesome is that! 😁
Very cool! I've seen them quite a few times on the yak but it never gets old
Priceless..thank you
Appreciate that, didnt catch much that day, but was really cool to encounter them
first glimpse, you're thinking massive stealth gator gonna eat him and the kayak
Literally that was my first thought for a sec as I looked over to my side
The two closest show evidence of being hit by boats. Not as common as it used to be, but ir happens.
I saw that too, at least on one of them. It's a shame that some boaters do not slow down in the manatee zones. These animals are so curious and gentle.
i swam with them as a kid. was an awesome experience. 🍻
Those same ones, wow
They are very cool, curious and gentle
I was thinking gators and was getting a bit nervous for him. LOL
What body of water are you in, in this video?
I'm in a coastal river close to Tampa FL
Those were some full figured mermaids.
I do not envy the headache you will have when you wake, but in the meantime rest well and dream of large women
Yes they were
@@tonym2513 Not large - VOLUPTUOUS!
Inconceivable. @@tonym2513
I had one swim by the dock I was fishing from on the Matanzas River near Palm Coast when I used to live there. Didn't actually see the manatee, but the amount of water that was being displaced as he swam past was impressive!
Yea they can move some water that's for sure. I had one get under my kayak on the bay in 3-4 of water. It spooked and my kayak almost flipped
You can see the wound on the ones back. Poor creatures do not hurt anyone, and should be protected better.
They are amazing gentle creatures and I agree should be protected more! Seen so many boats flying through protected zones
Running the yak over the top of a sleeping one just before first light wakes you up better than a big cup of coffee.
I accidentally got the kayak over one in like 4-6 foot of water and it swam up and about throw me from the yak so that definitely woke me up 😂
@@tdubsoutdoors yes. It's happened to me twice, but only once when it was almost completely dark. Until my brain could process what happened, I felt like a topwater lure that had been hit by a whale sized snook. Almost had to change my underwear. They can move fast for big fat men. 😁
That's awesome. Thanx!
I didn't know Manatees lived in rivers , I always thought they were ocean dwellers
These guys essentially like shallow, warm water with plenty of plant and algae growth, so they can be found well up river. Really the limit is how navigable the water way is for them as they are not small animals.
They *are* referred to as Coastal, but I can tell you as a Marine Ecologist who specialises in Coastal Ecosystems, (though North-western European and Arctic/Antarctic) in my case, that the term 'Coastal' can actually apply further inland than many might assume.
Being mammals Manatees require few of the specialist adaptations that most fish would require to be able to switch easily between Marine, brackish and Fresh Water. Brackish water being that zone where fresh and marine water mix. Others may term it Estuarine, which works as well...
I GUESS THE MANATEES WEREN'T BITING THAT DAY. 😂 🤣 😂
😂 😂 thankfully
I want to name one Hugh.
They’re just saying hi.
They actually were. I had them come up to me before and just stare at me 😂
How rude.👀
Awesome!
Thank you! Appreciate it
Outstanding cast!
Thank you!!!
Dude that's cool!
Thanks, it's really cool to see them. They really are curious and pretty chill!
It's sad to see prop tracks on their backs...............
Yes it is, frustrating and sad!
I thought at first, that’s a big damn gator but then noticed it’s round body
The exact thought I had when I turned to that side and saw it!
You're gonna need a Bigger boat !! 😆 🤣
😂 I agree
@@tdubsoutdoors 😄
Narwol are not in warm freshwater streams.
No they are not
I’d have been SO sad not to be allowed to pet them! They’re so gentle and friendly!
For the most part they are very curious and gentle creatures. I've had them literally come up right beside me and just stare
So cool!!!
Thank you! Love seeing them and even luckier seeing them while fishing
Sad both of them scarred up with prop marks we just have so many boats in our state the encounters are inevitable
Yea it is a shame. I get that there will be accidental encounters, just hate it when the encounters happen in areas where folks are supposed to follow the rules but don't!
Nice casting!
Thanks!!! Appreciate that
Thanks appreciate that!
Really cool!
Appreciate that!! I've seen them before many times but it never gets old!
they are just chilling having a BUD. hehehehe
Hahaha they definitely act like that!!! They are so chill
Lucky they weren't gators!
_"You're gonna need a bigger boat."_
Yes very true. Not going to disagree on that point!
manatee, i had assumed gators, and you in a boat smaller than either.
Glad they weren't 😂
I don't wish to cause a stir, but the manatee on the back end, is that the one someone wrote on several years ago (and got severely fined for, which they 100% should have)? It's hard to tell with the compressed video on UA-cam and I *think* I can see writing on it but it could totally be that one rubbed up against something natural.
Also, 100% thought they were alligators at first but laughed when they weren't. That's a super cool experience and I'm happy you did the right thing by giving them their space.
Hope you catch some big ones (fish, not manatees or alligators 🤣)!
Hey great comment there and I appreciate it! I've been fishing in Florida for a while now and unfortunately most or many manatees have boat prop scars or gashes from boats. Not saying that is what happened but most likely it is. If it was an alligator I'd been paddling straight up the bank lol!! And yea I always give them room, but they are so curious that they literally will come right up to your kayak. I accidentally went over one in my kayak once, and it nearly flipped my yak, so I've learned to give them space, plus it's the law.
Don't want to say that most scars are from boats and props as they can be from other encounters, but unfortunately many of the injuries look to be from boats. Ofc it's hard to see them as well
I wonder if they taste good. Natives ate them in the old day's before they became endangered by colonizers.
You're lucky to be alive!!!
Manatees usually don't bite
I had one bump my kayak once. Scared the crap out of me!
@@David-qo7lz I hear you on that. Same here! Something bumped my kayak, looked down and it was two feet from me! Lol 😂bout jumped out the yak
No doubt they are up that far. Notice the marks from Boat Propellers on their backs? Yeah
Me-If you lived in Florida (or Lousiana) why would you ever go near natural bodies of water?
Manatees.......us.
I like fishing too much!
Don't pet the green bumpy manatees.😮
😂 I'll have to be careful
Why not pet the green bumpy ones?
Wow. Nice.
Thanks! It was pretty cool and a bit of a surprise
Everything in Florida is cute or lethal or both.
That's so true!! 😂 😂
Shit I could see them immediately. I would shit my self.!
If they were gators I would of lol, when I reached over for the log, they definitely spooked me! 😂
Both of them had wounds to their backs, usually from motor props, that also kills a lot of them sadly.
Yea its pretty sad and I hate to see these gentle creatures with the boat wounds
Anywhere there are manatee...'crocodile and 'gators are. And you're called bacon on ah boat... ☆
A peril of living in Florida for sure!
Funny every how alligators seem to always know the exact date and time their hunting season opens though…
There are probably Crocs in the water too.
No Crocs here, maybe 3 hours south
Saw a breeding pair at a dolphin sanctuary in Cuba.
The staff were totally amazed and excited at seeing them after years of working there.
Lucky me was there for just a few hours, in the right place at the right time
Thats cool! Its really fortunate to see them!!
Those are Manatees, not Narwhals. Whales do not swim up stream and spawn. There mammals and he is in the Florida area.
Yea I've tried to say that several times lol. I appreciate it!
I didn't realize that Waterway had access to the ocean. When I saw the manatee in that small body of water I was shocked they existed in there!
I honestly was surprised too to see them that far up the river, but they can go between salt, brackish and fresh water
@@tdubsoutdoors Of course, they are mammals. They do not need any of the adaptations fish require to do the same because they are not subject to the same osmotic pressures fish are.
So long as there is access to the ocean the only real things stopping manatees traveling as far up river as they choose to go are food availability (they need to eat around 10% of their body weight per day, you have seen them, they are not small animals!), and navigability. Do they have room enough to move?
If both those are fine you could potentially see them anywhere in their range they can reach.
@@alganhar1 for sure you are totally correct, I was just surprised to see them that far up the river, just never seen them that far up and is why they startled me lol. Yea some folks think this is fake, but as you say they really can go anywhere they want
Two Manatees, both with injuries from boat propellers - sad.
Yes it is! Totally agreed
Its not fun when your fishing and these show up. Because they are federally protected from any human contact, its illegal to fish around them in florida.
looks like one had a prop encounter
For sure and I hate seeing it!
this happened to me with a couple of salties. i didnt live to tell about it.
Yea them salties are a different story, ain't no kayaking then
I am sorry to hear of your demise. I am sure you are missed.
I assumed it was going to be anti-fishing Karen's sneaking up to disrupt your fishing on "private" property.
That would have been a lot more entertaining lol!
@@tdubsoutdoors but not nearly as rewarding
Yeah I thought gators.
Thankfully not 😂
Why fish around manatees?
@@crazybirdblonde without trying to sound flip, they are all over Florida, especially my area, I could see one any given day. It's just a random thing. I dont try to fish around them, I generally try to stay out of their way, but they are very curious creatures and often times will appear at your kayak when fishing
That is scary as hell
It was even a bit more sketchy until I realized at least they were manatees. But as gentle as they are, if you get your kayak over then accidentally in shallow water they can flip you
Prop tracks across its back, ouch!
Yea I saw that true, so sad, as much as can be avoided
@@tdubsoutdoors And I've heard a great many of them have those wounds. I'm up near Chicago so it's not something I'm familiar with. Thanks for the response!
So I was hoping for an alligator 🤷🏻♂️
Lol I've seen them too
Cool.
Thanks!! Much appreciated

I heard they taste like chicken
i seen them at 7 second mark.
😂 I know I was too focused on getting past that tree branch
Sea cow don’t sneak.
Hahaha your right, but they can kinda appear at your kayak very quietly especially in the darker river waters
Stalked by the rarely filmed narwhale. The boater is extremely lucky that these were juveniles. As they mature and head downstream to the open oceans they develop their trademark spiral tusk, and their paddlelike tail splits into flukes. They only return to the streams they're born in to lay their dark brown, furry looking eggs beneath palm trees near water's edge. Fact.
Mr. MARC. What kind of animal are you talking about? I never heard of one before. Thought I would ask. You sound like your quite familiar with these.
@@marcweiss5115 😂😂 well they are a little off course from the artic waters, must have taken a wrong turn in Albuquerque and ended up in Florida. Crazy
