Really a great series. I don't do wedding photography but it has been very interesting and I've learned a lot about what you do to shoot weddings (and now engagements).
Another beautiful session! So very informational and helpful. I do have a question, I know it is our job to interact and engage the clients, which I do fairly well. But "clients you never met, how do you ask them to pose and re pose and smile, no smile. Etc." you know these two so well, how do you continue this with clients you haven't met? Thanks in advance!
+brownieshere Great question, thats hard for me to answer because every couple is totally different. Some people I meet for the first time are super photogenic and love being in front of the camera, some people don't know what to do in front of the camera. It all depends on the couple, I use a lot of the "techniques" I use in this video for most couples once they have warmed up.
David Iliyn Thanks for the quick reply. I greatly appreciate it. Yeah, I get a lot of clients "Your the pro, tell us how to pose" But once we are in the moment, I end up not instructing confidently enough, because of the reaction I have gotten from the clients. As you say some are more Photogenic than other's so that does play a huge part. But thanks so much I will continue to follow your work and learn more =) Greatly appreciate your help! God bless.
This happens with me too! Ill instruct my clients to do something and they are not happy with that or they give scowling faces. One time I asked my clients to kiss and when I was editing the photos you could see her rolling her eyes. sigh
I love your videos! You do amazing at showing us your workflow in every aspect... Posing, lighting, editing. It's amazing how many different shots you got in just one location! What was the device you were using on the back of your camera?
Amazing photos! Great video :) I recently got a Panasonic gh4 which is awesome for video but my stills are coming out poorly. Using a 12 - 35 mm 2.8 lens right now thinking maybe a different lens would help me come out with better photos? Do you have any suggestions? I was using canon previously but have switched!
Great Shots! Do you use a filter on your lens? I love the colors in the background of the cliffs. For some reason, our images have a blown out background. Any tips?
I'm really loving these episodes! I have a quick question for you David - I noticed you use that screen cover sometimes to take photos with live view. Do you use that just to adjust exposure before taking the shot so you can get a glimpse of the photo before taking it? I shoot Nikon, so my live view does reflect exposure changes like most Canon cameras, but I'd be curious to understand your method.
+Ian Michelman I use it to check exposure, and also zoom in 10x on the screen and manual focus for some shots. This insures i have tack sharp focus. I dont do it with every photo of course, but for further back shots I like to use that method.
I"m a beginner photographer (hobby kind of got out of hand :p ) And I get so much info from your videos! Thank you so much for uploading this! I wondered though why you use your livevieuw instead of vieuwfinder? Is it because of a special reason or just because you prefer LV > VF??
Thanks! I use live view so I can get a preview of what the shot will look like before I take it, also I can zoom in and manual focus and make sure I'm tack sharp.
ALOT of my shoots I do never is the right time of the day. I always wanna shoot in that twilight hour but "clients' always cant work with that time. ;? thanks for the content!
kinda boring about 20 shoots in the same pose. Couple so stressed, i prefer shoot naturally but great job btw what is the object between you and your camera?
Hey Dave, just curious. How come you shoot with your ISO at 200 when you can easily get away with it at 100 or even 50 and still get tack sharp images since youre shutter is so high? Thank you for all your videos! -Rob
You seem to spend a lot of time with one pose for a long period of time. Is that just you making sure you'll have something to work with when you edit?
becuse i see some time in sun change the iso in 400 why? why need 1/4000 or 1/6000 in second in daily sun? iso is low is better this my Question in my mind
I don't think so. He was being straight forward and working with them. Maybe I don't think so because I am the same way. Thinking about our next move with the couple.
These are honestly so so good (and helpful!). Thanks for letting me shadow you- virtually.
+Brooklyn McKay (afondmemory) Thanks Brooklyn!
Really a great series. I don't do wedding photography but it has been very interesting and I've learned a lot about what you do to shoot weddings (and now engagements).
awesome video and I loved the color in the pictures!
Awesome video love the edits I really want to start editing for that moody look
Much prefer natural lit shoots like this, while I do like flash, i find that people are way more relaxed when its just them, you and the camera
+TheKiwiJobes Totally agree, also you don't have to fumble around changing lighting/moving softboxes etc.
David Iliyn Nothing better than some nice natural light too!
Were you using any sort of ND filter here? I noticed the SS's were high and ISO's were low, but you were very shallow with your DOF.
Thanks a lot for the bts! great shots
Really love these tutorials, and great results!
+newsgirl132 thanks!!
Natural lighting is more my taste as well

Thanks for this video! How much after (or before) sunrise would you recommend starting a photo session?
I would recommend starting maybe 30 minutes before sunset that way you can get some with harsh light and ride the golden hour after until done.
I love your videos! You do amazing at showing us your workflow in every aspect... Posing, lighting, editing. It's amazing how many different shots you got in just one location! What was the device you were using on the back of your camera?
+FitDisney Mom Thanks :) Its a loupe that clips onto the back of the screen, I use liveview and manual focus/check exposure from time to time.

+Logan Reinard No filters, I shoot in RAW and edit everything in Lightroom. Depends what your background is! Lower your exposure if its blown out.
Hey fantastic shots and video as per! May I ask, you often ask your couple to re-set their smiles, what do you mean by this? Ta!
+monsurepik I tell couples to reset their smiles which basically means, stop smiling and start again. Its for when their smiles start to look forced!
Nice! Thanks for sharing this! What is your favorite lens for this type of shoot? What about a family shoot?
Thanks, 50mm I would say!
Wicked man - lovin it!
+mark thode thanks!
good video series David.
+albertr915 Thanks!
Thanks for this! What lens did you use? It looks so sharp
I'm really loving these episodes!

Great shots and great location!!! Where is this?
smith rock!
David, is that an LCD viewfinder you use? which one is it? I love that you can remove it so easily! Great shoot!!
also do you shoot with it in live view mode?
Its a kinoteknik and I use the camera in live view mode while I use it.
I"m a beginner photographer (hobby kind of got out of hand :p ) And I get so much info from your videos!

allright! Thanks for replying :D Do you really have to use the lcd-case for it or does it work without as well??
you need the eye cup when its really bright outside.
Just want to ask what mic did you use while shooting this? Thanks
they are sooo cute
queremos ver la edición de estas estas fotos David. (italiano) vogliamo vedere come hai editato le foto David
ALOT of my shoots I do never is the right time of the day. I always wanna shoot in that twilight hour but "clients' always cant work with that time. ;? thanks for the content!
+Andrew Carpenter Yeah thats always the worst!
Hiya, were the shots straight out of camera or with editing? :) They look amazin'!
+Jeremy O. They were edited!
kinda boring about 20 shoots in the same pose. Couple so stressed, i prefer shoot naturally but great job btw what is the object between you and your camera?
Yeah it kinda did, but oh well thats why there are tons to choose from.

Iso 100/200 will be cleaner than 50. Also you wont see much noise from 100-600 on the 5D3.
Maybe I missed that, but at what time of the day did you shoot? Also are you on Manual mode or using AV or TV mode?
+CZ Photography This was at 5pm in February. I have only ever use Manual mode :)
U da real MVP :-)
Death grip. Did he win combat?
You seem to spend a lot of time with one pose for a long period of time. Is that just you making sure you'll have something to work with when you edit?
+Emily Canwell Mostly for the video tutorial. It goes much quicker when not shooting video :)
question, when you're doing two people at f2, who do you have the focus point set on?
always focus on the closer person--depth of field is 1/3 in front of your focus and 2/3 behind so hopefully with proper aperture both will be in focus
also the closer you are to the people the higher you will need your aperture to be in order to focus on both
May i know what's your picture style setting?
+heri fury Standard
Why iso 200 / s1600 ?
Maybe (iso 100 / low s)
Thanks for the video. What's the reason to use iso200 in bright sunlight?
+Vendetta Some say its cleaner than 100. It honestly doesn't matter on the 5D3 anything from 100-800 is clean.
+David Iliyn thank you for answering
David, are you unfeasibly tall? It looks like you're shooting down on the couple...
+simianinc I was on a hill ;)
is it me, or was you just focus recomposing at 2.0?
Yes.
Distance to aperture ;-)
why choose iso 200 ?
your shutter speed 1/4000 is big control why choose iso 200 noisy why ?
Native iso is around 160-200 on 5d MK III. So it produces the least noise around there.
yes your camera is strong but why not iso 100? and little les shutter speed? like 1/800 or 1/2000 or ... why? why not full clear noise
perfect clean photo why not?
becuse i see some time in sun change the iso in 400 why? why need 1/4000 or 1/6000 in second in daily sun? iso is low is better this my Question in my mind
Exactly
wow, great like to dislike ratio david!
Glad to see!
his voice sounds so bored and annoyed..
I don't think so. He was being straight forward and working with them. Maybe I don't think so because I am the same way. Thinking about our next move with the couple.
