Thank you so much for showing the bags that you use. Most UA-camrs don’t tell you what kind of concrete cement they are using. It’s refreshing to see the face of the bag. Thank you very much!!!
Nice video. When I was in my younger 20's a older stucco guy taught me his brick trick. First apply the stucco layer in the natural grey color. Then we would add some dyed (red, orange, black, purple) mix thin layer over the top to it to look like brick (different shades for different types of brick) Then you can add some rake lines with a rake tool if desired too, to look like raked brick. Now take a level to get straight lines and use a tool we would make from a handle and wire rolled into a loop at one end to carve out the mortar joints, this makes cleaner lines than a round over joint tool. You need to cut in deep enough to get thru the dyed layer and into the grey layer so your joints look like real mortar. When almost dry use a whisk broom or paint brush to fine tune the rough edges if wanted. Most people would never even know it was stucco and not real brick when finished. Oh.. and I been doing it over 40 years 😊hehehe.

I do a lot of similar masonry work and I found that if you take the eraser off of a regular pencil, then you can use the "eraser end" of a pencil to make the lines between the rocks when carving rock-type patterns into cement. It effectively gets the cement out while simultaneously smoothing out the cement. I also use a piece of 60 grit sandpaper to "stamp" the cement when doing a brick pattern. The sandpaper impression makes the brick carvings look more natural, if that's the look you're going for. Just wanted to share with everyone!!

Hey Mike, pretty cool. Watching you I couldn't help but think about some of your other vids creating molds and how they could apply to this, i.e. "Stamping" patterns for use on larger areas. Can you combine the entire process, coming up with a pattern for either walls or flat surfaces, making the mold, then applying the mold to the mortar or whatever type of material you choose to use to create a finished larger area?
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the vocabulary - parge/parging/parged! I've been calling it "putting the concrete on - you know, smearing it around..." I haven't (yet) tried any of the design techniques, but I've done plenty of parging. I learned a lot of this the hard way - but your tips are super-helpful. Hubs and I did some repairs to our front porch a few years ago when a piece of the corner broke off, exposing the bottom of the wood post. I was much better at parging than he was, so he let me do all of it, and just did the mixing for me. (he even took a picture of me doing it & posted it to fb to tell everyone how proud he was to have such a skilled/talented wife - sigh
"I do what I want"....now I can respect that. Seriously though, this was redonculously informative and fun to watch! Thanks. I'm wondering if this stuff will stick to artificial stucco?
my friend took some tiny projector it had a usb connection, he took any image off the internet of a brick pattern, then projected it on to the wall, it was good enough to see the brick lines. i thought that was pretty smart
After binge watching your videos I have to say that you have some really awesome ideas! And the tutorial parts are so down to earth. Like listening to a friend. Looks like I have lots to try here in AZ now since our backyard has a block wall around it! I look forward to the next half!
I'm a beginner. Let's say hypothetically I want to remove the design years later how do-able is that? Also could I do this to regular that's on the front of my house. I don't believe it's real brick, feels kinda real but super cheap and hollow sounding, would it still bond?

I'm thinking you could do this on a cement board... Take your time and controlled environment to do panels in your garage then transport it to the site and just fill in gaps. What you think?
It's official, You are my HERO!!! You are fun and easy to watch and the projects are awesome.
I get a lot of great ideas from you. Love watching your videos!
A big thank you! your explenation makes it easy to understand and takes away the mistery for the beginners like me. I will subscribe for sure.
Can you do this over hardy backer board... say like doing the front of a new build fireplace instead of stone veneer? Thanks for the video and your time.
Yes u can as long as you use stucco wire over the hardy backer
You absolutely can. Ive never done it but I know guys that don’t even bother with the metal lath
You could...I use backer board for my stain and seal samples....other product but it will perform the same!!
@@JuanMejia-dm2io I normally use fiberglass mesh over joints then use a primer over the cement board. No wire needed. I use this method for thinstone installations.
@Armando Hectic yes. It's not the milk but a product you paint on for better adhesion. Weld-Crete or Conproco Primer. Superior bond for smooth surfaces.
Duder! I learned sooo very much today w/you while having a ball 😀 !! Thanks for great entertainment during these challenging times my friend.
I've found myself with some time off right now can I count on you to help me do that to my house lol
My God... you are an angel... this rock design is what I am looking for...trying to build a cement oven and I have no experience but I am gonna make this as I am halfway there already 😀
That actually looks like fun. Gives me an idea for my house.
you have the right attitude for youtube man, thanks for the content. im already a fan.
Could you do a pour in place countertop over tile please. I cant wait to do my countertops, just dont know if i should tare them out or if i can pour over them.please please please
And add...make it a waterfall countertop continuous pour. Please!
A one inch chip brush dipped in water really works well to smooth out those rough spots and lines. I used the technique on a basement rubble wall and it worked well. Looks much better when painting. Nice video, thumbs up!
Thank you so much Mark! I’ll have to try that sometime
That would look great on a block grill in the back yard
This is just the project I had in mind for the doldrum hours of the pandemic! Thanks !
I'm in Texas. I've had that mortar set in while I was pouring it out of the bucket. Don't use in 90 degree weather !
Seems basic advice for a lot of materials
its the same if you're in SC, GA, TN, FL, CA, AZ, NM, LA, MS, NV, UT, Etc. Etc.
I'm glad I clicked on 1 of your videos months ago ( liked\subscribed ) you do a great job at them. This is what I'll do to old & weathered foundation maybe with cobblestone corners. Thanks for making it look so simple
Great video. I have a few front porch blocks that are cracked open. after watching your video I will fix them. Thank you.
“I’m not an artist.” .... creates the Mona Lisa.
Lol . Not quite but i get your point
The Mason Lisa....
Lol 😂 thank you so much William! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that!
@@MichaelBuilds Bob Ross would be so proud of you... Great video. Keep up the good work.
@@mxjman It's my name, lol. Mason meaning man of stone.
I have been watching your channel for 30 years man
Looking good! I’m guessing the 7 thumbs down have all been “doing it for 30 years”
You can't put that stuff on that thick!
hahaha
Lol!
Most likely
Yeah, guys like me who've been in masonry for 40+ years don't know anything. So funny.
You amateurs are endless comedy gold.
I meant mostlikely because a 30 vet of the trade knows how its supose to be done ive got 35 yrs in stucco an stone so im on the side of the 30 yr guys
I've been wanting to do this for 30 years! Hope it won't take 30 yrs for the followup! Learned a Lot!
lol editing as we speak! 👍🏻😊
I've been waiting for this video since your IG post..... Awesome!!!
Lol 😂 Thank you so much!
Yes you are an artist. And you make it look way easier than it is
my friend took some tiny projector it had a usb connection, he took any image off the internet of a brick pattern, then projected it on to the wall, it was good enough to see the brick lines. i thought that was pretty smart
After binge watching your videos I have to say that you have some really awesome ideas! And the tutorial parts are so down to earth. Like listening to a friend. These are things I have always wanted to try but didn't know where to start. I made a concrete bench around our firepit when we lived in Michigan.
Yes
Removal would be tedious, but lightly tapping with a hammer and a metal brush on a drill could get off details.
you are now officially favorite UA-cam. Thank you.
Can you do that on plywood like stucco the outside walls on a plywood storage building?
Good question...following.
I would like to know to
I beg to differ. You ARE an artist! Good job sir!
