Nels Alling, the sculptor who created the George Washington statue, was my great grandfather. I was only 5 when he passed away at 94 years of age. He immigrated to NJ in the 1880s from Denmark where he had been awarded a royal gift for his work. After receiving the award, he left Denmark and worked in the terra cotta industry as a designer. My grandmother, Lillian Alling Jensen, had saved many old photographs and included was a photo of her elder sister Julia posing with her father before the statue of Washington when it was still inside the shops. In his later years he operated a monument company near the Alpine Cemetery with his son, Dens Alling. Thank you for creating this excellent presentation.
My family and I have been living in an old house from 1949 in VA for 7 yrs now, I recently cleaned the fireplace and noticed writing on the bricks but could only make out Perth Amboy and some random other letters, now I know it's bricks from Perth Amboy Terra Cotta Co. What's even crazier is that I'm originally from NJ and lived 5 mins away from Perth Amboy and I even use to hang out in the city. I'm just so amazed with the history! Thank you for the video.

During my 78 years, beginning in Fords, Keasbey, Woodbridge and Perth Amboy, I’ve never before gained such an appreciation of the terra cotta industry and the number of examples still remaining. I’d always thought of terra cotta only in the context of chimney flues and water pipes. I feel cheated that local history such as this was never presented in the public schools. Excellent history of Perth Amboy's Terra Cotta industry. I remember playing in the Woodbridge clay pits as a kid. My great grandparents arrived in Perth Amboy in 1901 from Germany. I live in Chicago now & after the Chicago Fire of 1871 many buildings were made from Perth Amboy Terra Cotta.

Nels Alling (@10:00) was my great grandfather. I still remember him from when I was a child in the early 50s. It is great to find this.
