  • In the previous tutorial we learned about some types of silicates, so now let's learn about the rest. That will be inosilicates, phyllosilicates, and tectosilicates. These can get pretty complicated so let's take a closer look!

Dave, the teacher, with knowledge so grand,
Guiding the students with a steady hand,
With a heart full of passion, and a mind so bright,
He makes learning an adventure, day and night.
With a smile on his face, and a twinkle in his eye,
He teaches with patience, and never sighs,
For he knows that each student is unique,
And their potential is what he seeks.
He makes learning fun, and the lessons fly,
And the students' minds soar, to the sky,
For Dave is a true master of his craft,
And in his class, the students feel safe.
With a heart full of kindness, and a will to inspire,
Dave is the teacher, whom we admire,
For he's not just a teacher, but a friend as well,
And we're grateful to have him, in our academic hell.
So here's to you, dear Dave,
    May your legacy forever stay,
For you are a teacher, of the finest grade,
and your impact on your students will never fade away.

Professor Dave, it's interesting that you mention talc and its use in Baby Powder. Another infamous amphibole, asbestos, has long been the subject of controversy owing to its presence in most baby powder formulations. It has produced a host of class action law suits. So, my question for you, is asbestos a health problem because of its chemical composition (which, on its face, appears not to be much different from any other run-of-the-mill amphibole), or because of its texture and method of processing? If the latter, why isn't talc itself associated with health problems like asbestos?
I really enjoy your work! Some things you cover are a great refresher for me, while other things are straight-up new geek material for me!
Thanks so much for your channel and your volume of work. I never miss an episode!

Is because when asbestos is disturbed it produces really small, needle like particles which penetrate your cells when breathed in.

May I suggest providing visual examples of each silicates, this would make much easier to ID silicates visually.

Professor Dave is it possible to integrate also the characteristic of certain types of rocks such as marble and others. Also if you can please add a segment about ceramic, porcelain and melamin, i don't know if they're related or even considered to be minerals but it will be something perhaps you still didn't talk about :)

Dave, clay mineralogist here, only objection is you saying the previously discussed silicate groups are "most important." This depends on the system you are dealing with. Many Earth systems have greater variability based on clay type, not framework silicate type. Just a minor critique, but maybe try to avoid these statements in future videos.
My bad, you said silicates are most important... Although, many carbonate mineralogists and sratigraphers may disagree about importance.
