  • We just learned about plate tectonics, so let's see how that fits into a global-scale model for the formation and destruction of supercontinents called the Wilson Cycle. How do supercontinents like Pangea form and split up? It's an awe-inspiring process that takes millions of years, so let's check it out!

Absolutely fascinating! I think the hardest thing to grasp is the time-scale over which these powerful changes occur. Just like it's difficult to grasp the enormity of distance between our galaxy and those formed 13 billion years ago, it's hard to imagine these processes playing out over hundreds of millions of years. It's so impressively humbling, yet super exciting! Thanks, Professor Dave. Really enjoyed this one.

Saying thanks as a Canadian for discussing Tuzo Wilson's work on plate tectonics. He deserves much more recognition than he's gotten in the past.

For an in-depth dive into the history of this epic discovery, there's nothing better than Henry Frankel's The Continental Drift Controversy (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2017) - 4 volumes. Masterpiece of scholarship and a deep dive into how scientists came to accept a theory that was long considered preposterous.

hi, anyone konw, when stage 1 the continent separate apart, rifting system, but it is rifting system stops and the subduction begins and consume all the oceanic lithosphere , which they rejoin again? am I right? idk why the divergent system stop.

Would slab pull from the subduction of one or more of the tectonic spreading plates be a possible mechanism for passive rifting?

I'm starting to see why Plate Tectonics theory met with such stiff resistance in its early days.
It requires a hell of a lot of mechanisms and explanations, without which the idea of shifting continents seems mysterious and even absurd.
But that's part of the beauty of science... When mysteries abound, people go and research them, and when all the results point in one direction, a new theory is formed.

Henry Frankel's Continental Drift Hypothesis (Cambridge, 2017) chronicles scientists' long resistance to the theory... what made the difference, ultimately, was the discovery of sea floor spreading

@@Riogrande1964 The sea floor spreading is fine. The subduction and all "plate tectonics" is a poor fantasy.

I love Professor Dave... but... yeah, but. You have too much talent and knowledge to spend all of it spoiling the ramblings of mad people. There is madness that has crossed over into the mainstream and that should be your calling. I know you don't want to dip into politics, but, if that's where the mud is, we need someone to sort through it. You know what I mean.
