Got to love the Cockatoos. Growing up in North Queensland, Galahs were far more common. 100s of them would meet up on the overhead powerlines in town for the evening. They were super noisy but an amazing sight when they all decided to leave.
It's amazing seeing that solid column of water from the clouds to the ground. Logically that's what most rainstorms look like, but it's still striking to see it.

Before the Dandenong Bird park was renovated it was quite a bit more open there, with a lot more with a lot more connection to the surrounding forest. This meant many various and somewhat obscure birds could be found if you were lucky. Now with a monitored feeding areas we only really see the more aggressive Cockatoos and some Lorikeets which is a shame but at least the birds are no longer grievously overfed like they used to be. The Dandenong Ranges are beautiful.
In Australia, Australians go to areas like this on holidays and to relax because we get next to no tourists, unless they are friends/family of locals, in these places. The 'Outback' is where all the tourists go.
Is this the trip where Graham came up with the Australian Dave's Spokesman "Dave's house of Lyrebirds and Direbirds" bit? I've always hoped that could get spun into a Crapshot.

Emerald is nicer and Lakeside is your best choice for destination especially once the state government builds the facilities they're proposing there. Gembrook is not really worth it although the change in scenery from mountainous forest to farmland is interesting.
So yeah, pretty much the entirety of Australia's eastern coast goes: ocean -> beachside bush/swamp (which is largely colonised only in the major cities and not really otherwise) -> mountain ranges with subtropical rainforest -> hinterlands/grasslands thinning out gradually to -> the outback. So it's mostly desert, but the east (and south) edges are pretty green.
The other common jungle sound effect is a Common Loon. Loons don't even live in the jungle, they summer in freshwater lakes in the northern US and Canada, and winter in the ocean.

Cockatoos from what I've seen and heard from various people in the know, will try to make as loud and obnoxious a sound as they can, just because they want to. The most clear example of this I know of is the video of a cockatoo screaming into a little cup to make its voice louder.
Had a Moluccan Cockatoo for a long time you did not want to get your hands anywhere near it's beak cause it could take a finger clean off if he wanted to. And he often did want to. He was a mean bastard, near as I could figure it he was pissed at humans for taking him out of the jungle. Which I can't blame him one bit. Now don't say I'm to blame for him being brought to the US. We didn't buy him from an importer. We were the third or fourth person to care for him the other couldn't handle his personality. If you still want a Cockatoo spend the big buck and get a captive raised hand feed bird they are a hell of a lot calmer.
Oscar was owned by my parents but they had to get rid of him when my older sister was born He enjoyed dragging tables, imitating phones and trains in the middle of the night, diving headfirst into chip bowls, and swearing like a sailor. Also smoke. When Dad took him to the pet store he told the staff to put an actual lock on his cage, not just a latch. They said "Sure" but didn't listen. The next day when they opened they found every animal let out, running around the store and Oscar sitting atop the counter, snacking on a dog biscuit, like the King of the castle. Afterwards they used a lock. A sweet elderly couple came in looking for a companion. They looked at him and asked how much he turned to them and shouted "Too f***ing much!" They immediately fell in love with him and took him home. Long story short I really wish I had known him personally, he sounded amazing!
I grew up in the this area, in a place called Belgrave which in near the bottom of the mountain. It's a beautiful area. Though Grants picnic ground use to have Roseallas(the parrots, as you say) now, unfortunately there is mainly cockatoo's. For us those cockatoo's are pest! They destroy houses, as the try and eat the roofs and gutters on the houses.
Have you guys ever walked the Arboretum during one of your various trips to Seattle? Absolutely gorgeous large park with a lot of nice views and gardens in it, seems like your kind of thing. I love it there.
BTW pro tip...magpies may look cute...but they are dangerous mofos. Particularly around spring...When they are on the ground they are ok but they may have a nest nearby and they "swoop". ie they try and pierce a beak shaped hole in the back of your head. Ain't fun. would avoid where possible.

Graham some of the birds you could have been hearing may have been lyrebird's, so you may have not been hearing the birds that you would think your hearing. I know they are in that area because that's the place I saw them in the wiled with my own eye balls.

Australia is significantly subtropical, not any more arid than a lot of other countries with deserts. I'm not even really sure where the misconception comes from. Possibly foreigners' only impressions being based on pictures of Uluru?
