Hey Josh! Have a doubt in the final question of 2nd passage: The second option says "Europe’s feudal society was a reciprocal system in which knights and serfs served their lords in return for resources, protection, and land" - However, the passage doesn't mention anywhere that knights worked for resources, protection or land. It only mentions this - "knights gave military service to a lord and carried out his justice". Is there something I am missing here?
Hi, and thanks for the question. As you noted, the passage says Knights gave military service to the lord. It can be assumed or implied that was for protection or land, as this fits exactly what the passage is talking about. More importantly, the summary sentence is mainly talking about the serfs, as is answer B. I do see your point, though. :)
What I do not understand, there is a 0-30 in reading. But this test only has 20 questions (resulting in 22 points since the last question gives up to 2 points). How is the score calculated?
At the end of this practice test, you will find an answer key, information to help determine your score, and explanations of the answers - tstprep.com/opt-in-complete-toefl-practice-test-10-yt/
Hey, Josh! Thanks for the great materials! Can you please explain why the answer to question 8 is B? I chose D, and we find support for it in the first sentence. First, “the function of sleep is different for everyone” is rephrased in the sentence as “sleep serves no single universally adaptive function”; and second, the part “and the amount required varies” is the same as “different species have evolved different patterns of sleep in response to their unique evolutionary pressures”. Option D perfectly restates the information in the first sentence, and there is just no logical contradiction in any part. I get it why B could also be right, however, it doesn’t so explicitly expresses the idea of the text. We can infer it from the context, yes. But I can’t understand why, if there’s a better, more precise answer option such as D, the correct answer is B?
@@TSTPrep Thanks for your answer! Now I get it. My mother tongue played a trick on me. In English "everyone" is used to talk only about people, I guess, whereas in my language we use it for every living organism.
Hi, Josh. Thank you for your valuable videos, which help me to prepare for the updated test I am to take next Sunday. I have scored 20/22 this time, but I hope that on the actual exam everything will be even better! Thank you a million once again.
@user-lj1jl5nb2v I hope you got a good score. Can you help me understand if reading in the actual test is on a similar level as this test or more or less complicated than this?
I have a question... On the last question of each passage, it asks you to pick three choices that best summarize what you have read, and it gives you an introductory sentence with it. Are we supposed to answer that question based on what 3 options fit under that introductory sentence or just the three main ideas of the passage?
Thanks, Josh! Your guides are always helpful. I registered a test on Jan 13. Hope I got the best score to apply for a scholarship in 2024. Hi everyone! My test is in 3 weeks and I am so anxious about it. Your videos are really helpful. I reached 11/20 points at my first try. I don't know it is good start.
I got a free test of tofel from my friend that had recently registered for the exam , and i believe that the passage are more hard to read but the questions are more reasonable and easier , in this exam , i found many questions that have more than one answer right .. idk maybe its just me
We have mixed opinions about our tests, some people find them easier, while others find them more difficult than the TOEFL iBT, but in general, there are some tricky questions and answer choices in the TOEFL iBT.
Hi, @TST prep Please explain why the answer of passage 2 question 3 is D. Why not option B is correct? The passage mentions that “Lords owned the Land…” And the option says “ Landowners were referred to Lords…” . The explanation for why option B is wrong is not even there in the PDF. Please explain.
You make a good point. B is not explicitly stated, but the sentence does say the landowners rented out the land and then the knights worked for their lords on this land, so you can assume B is true. D, is clearly wrong because there was a feudal system that governed the farming of the land.
Hi Josh I am really thankful for your efforts, I just finished my exam and I screwed up in the reading sction (I got 20 out of 30) and I am really sad that happened specially that I practiced a lot and all of my scores were above 25. Although I got 28 in listening which is good, I still feel overwhelmed since I was depending on those two section to get a good score. Anyways I just wanted to thank and wish me luck regarding my speaking and writing scores.
I hope you get a good score in speaking and writing. Can you help me understand if reading in the actual test is on a similar level as this test or more or less complicated than this?
@@dhruvmakwana3367 Thanks for your kind wish, and yes it is actually so similar so don't worry, one thing I will recommend is not to spend a lot of time on summary qusetions since mine was harder than my practice and that prevented me from going back to revise my other answers. Also, keep an eye on the timing, it is really moving very fast in the reading section. My mistake was being too comfortable with it so be careful and good luck with your exam.
Thanks Josh!, The answer of "Why Do We Sleep Paragraph 3's" 6th questions answer provided in PDF is wrong, it misinterpreted the option between C for D.
This one is tricky. The main difference is one option says there is evidence and the other option says the results are mixed. This is how the test differentiate the two.
Hi Josh I would like to know what you recommend the most, reading first and then answering the questions or to answer the questions while you read the lecture? specially for this new format :)
You do not have enough time to read the passage and answer the questions. I recommend going one paragraph at a time. The style is up to you, but I usually recommend skimming the paragraph quickly first and then answering all the questions connected to that paragraph before moving on to the next one.
Hi Josh! My current level is A2+ and I am studying English at Boston University in Boston. I would like to know if I can achieve an 80/120 score on the TOEFL after the next seven months. Please, give a helpful schedule and some advice. Thank you so much
Hey Josh, thanks a lot for the videos!! I have a question regarding question 7: the correct answer would be c, but in my opinion, b is also right (in this context false), as it says that women and girls made yarn. The text firstly mentions men and boys and then women and children. So they are not necessarily girls or am I wrong?
Thanks for the question. B would not be the answer. The men and boys cut sheered the sheep but the women and girls made it into yarn. Thus, B would be true. Since we want the false answer, we would cross it out. :)
Hi there and good question. You can jump around the passages for the Reading section. However, this is only for the Reading, for the other sections you have to go in order.
Hi Josh, you have a video about "5 reading mistakes to avoide" But it was published in March, which made for the old exam the one before the changes in July So is it still helpful? I mean, is it possible to benefit from it and apply the ideas in it to the new exam? whether that video or other similar old videos
We are planning to update the videos, but you can still use them since the Reading section remains pretty much the same with just one less passage to complete.
Hi Josh, I want to know whether the "Fill in the table" is still part of new Toefl 2023 reading section? The last question of Toefl reading is either "Prose Summary Question" or "Fill in the table Question". As per the recent samples share by ETS, there is always a prose summary question not fill in the table (the last question am talking about). Please reply or share any relevant info in your video / shorts so that we know whether to spend time on "Fill in table" or not because it is more time consuming and lengthy as compared to prose summary question. Thanks
Fill In The Table questions are still a part of a test, however, they are less common. Most people will not see one and instead get two summary questions. However, you may indeed get one, so please keep practicing. :)
@@TSTPrep thanks for the updates. Please share a video of how to attempt it.. the tips n tricks coz it's difficult than the two summary/ prose summary question. Will be waiting

In general, when students are at a lower level of proficiency, I find that TOEFL practice is not the best. Students at lower levels of proficiency should work on the basics of English first. I would suggest investing time in a site like LingQ where you can do some extensive practice that is not connected to the TOEFL, that way you can build your skills and vocabulary with text that is a little bit easier before moving ahead with the TOEFL. www.lingq.com/

Hello! I was wondering if you could switch between passages during the actual exam? For example, can you leave 1 question in the first passage, move onto the second passage, finish it, and then come back to the first passage once again?
11:36 I strongly disagree with the answer B, as suggested by the keys. My explanation: "which increase in darkness" refers to predatory risks. So the focus of this piece of information is solely on the behaviour of animals who obviously tend to attack at night. Now, you can indeed argue that a) is incorrect, because the author merely suggests or implies but not explains so. But, b) is incorrect either, as if the predatory risk increases in darkness, why is the logical consequence for humans to go to sleep over this time period? Doesn't make sense at all - you are aware of danger but still go to sleep bearing the hope not to be eaten overnight. Now, the next sentence gives us the explanation: humans thus MOVED in the safe areas, like caves, to sleep there, protected by natural surrounding from the predators. Yet this sentence is not in the spotlight of the question: we are asked WHY does the author say that the predatory risks increase at night. I understand this question and reference quite literally. All possible inferences at this point are simply overthinking.
Thanks for your feedback. I understand your point, but B is correct. The sentence the question is asking about offers introduces the possibility of attacks, which increase in darkness. The phrase, "increase in darkness is there to explain why tht why that theory exists. I would suggest not reading the whole paragph because you may be overthinking your responses. The reason for why a phrase is used should be clear within 2-3 sentences of the phrase itself, so there is no need to read until the end.
Hi josh, I chose option A for question 5 and option D for question 8, but the answer key shows different options for passage 1. Could you please clarify this?
Thanks for your question. For question five, A is too specific and not linked to the phrase they are asking about. For question eight, D would not be correct because the functions of sleep are not different for everyone. There may be some basic functions that are the same for many or most people. Hope this helps. :)
Quick question to everyone. So, I have scored a 17 out of 20 on the reading test (practice). However, I don’t understand the math right now… Can somebody tell me what my score is on a scale 1-30. Because D state the the same research is giving the 2 results mentioned in the highlighted sentence but the sentence its written there is a research that mentions this and also mentions there are other researchers who mentions something else so isn't it clear that the experiments have mixed results?
During a question is the whole passage visible or its just the particular paragraph? Can it be the case that a question has answer related information in some other paragraph?

Hi I just wanted to know if in question 10 we lose all 2 points even if we only get 1 or 2 choices wrong out of the three. And thank you for your help.
Summary questions are worth two points. If all three choices are correct, award yourself two points. If two choices are correct and one is incorrect, award yourself one point. If two or more choices are incorrect, you earn zero points for the given question.

Thanks very much for your question. The answer cannot be D because the passage says sleep varies among different species, not different people.
@@TSTPrep Thanks for your answer! Now I get it. My mother tongue played a trick on me. In English "everyone" is used to talk only about people, I guess, whereas in my language we use it for every living organism.

I have a question... On the last question of each passage, it asks you to pick three choices that best summarize what you have read, and it gives you an introductory sentence with it. Are we supposed to answer that question based on what 3 options fit under that introductory sentence or just the three main ideas of the passage?
More specifically, do the three answer question we pick have to be in direct correlation with the introductory sentence?
Thanks for sharing. I will be very helpful to add subtitles on the video 👌

My test is in 3 weeks and I am so anxious about it. Your videos are really helpful. I reached 11/20 points at my first try. I don't know it is good start.
Well, it depends on your goal score. Either way, keep practicing and stay motivated. Consistent practice is the best way to improve.
Hi, @TST prep
Please explain why the answer of passage 2 question 3 is D.
Why not option B is correct? The passage mentions that “Lords owned the Land…”
And the option says “ Landowners were referred to Lords…” .
@narmeenomer5313 Thank you for commenting and hope you get your desired score!

Hello, thank you for your video! Could you explain why passage 1 Q 8 is not C? Thanks!
Hello man, I think it is because option c is already stated in the text, so you are not inferring it. Hope it helps

Hi Josh and team!
Does the material of the emergence toefl is updated as the new 23 toefl?
Hey Josh, thanks a lot for the videos!! I have a question regarding question 7: the correct answer would be c, but in my opinion, b is also right (in this context false), as it says that women and girls made yarn. The text firstly mentions men and boys and then women and children. So they are not necessarily girls or am I wrong?
Thanks for the question. B would not be the answer. The men and boys cut sheered the sheep but the women and girls made it into yarn. Thus, B would be true. Since we want the false answer, we would cross it out. :)
On the online Toefl IBT exam, can you go back and skip questions? For both the listening and reading sections?
Hi there and good question. You can jump around the passages for the Reading section. However, this is only for the Reading, for the other sections you have to go in order.
Hi Josh,
you have a video about "5 reading mistakes to avoide"
But it was published in March, which made for the old exam the one before the changes in July
So is it still helpful?

Yes, it says "women and children," in the passage. It is safe to assume some of them are girls. Otherwise, it would have said women and boys.

Hi josh,
I chose option A for question 5 and option D for question 8, but the answer key shows different options for passage 1. Could you please clarify this?
Thanks for your question. For question five, A is too specific and not linked to the phrase they are asking about. For question eight, D would not be correct because the functions of sleep are not different for everyone. There may be some basic functions that are the same for many or most people. Hope this helps. :)
Well most of them are equivocal
