2018 / 2019 Polaris Slingshot - Crazy Fun or Just Crazy?

  • The Polaris Slingshot is hands down the most unusual vehicle I have ever driven. It's simultaneously a blast, irritating, epic, engaging, grating, hilarious, impractical, crazy, flashy, quirky and weird. If you're looking for one of the most interesting vehicles on three wheels, this baby is for you. For the rest of us, there's a Mazda MX-5 Miata.

I'm a slingshot owner, my experience has definitely been amazing. It's a real head turner and a thumbs up magnet. No point in comparing this to any other vehicle within the price range because there's none.

Ok Alex. As a Slingshot owner myself since 2015, you do not buy one because you like anything remotely cool about a stupid Mazda Miata. We buy them because either we ride motorcycles or enjoy the open road feeling. Every time you said the word Miata I wanted to slap a baby. That is all.

This is the poor man's Lamborghini. Granted, its performance is mediocre at best, but from a fun-to-drive and/or head-turning standpoint, it's hard to beat at any price. Plus $20K gets you in one, and the off-the-shelf GM engine means that maintenance won't break the bank. As for practicality, who cares?!? I'll use my Elantra to get groceries. The slingshot would turn my daily commute to work into an exciting adventure and I can always toss my computer bag in the passenger seat.

  • @B.D.TRX4

I rented one it rides pretty horrible the seats are plastic the radios borderline useless. But the parts that frighten me about it was if you're the second car behind a car in front of you at a light the cars in the opposing direction do not know you're there and if they want to make a left turn while you're going straight they can't see you behind a truck or anything else and more importantly you can't see them because you're literally sitting on the ground. Also the place that I rented it from had many front end damage Parts in the back that they had to keep replacing because you can't ride over top of anything that falls on the road. It hits the front and shatters the front... for $30,000 you can buy a convertible car like a Mazda MX-5 or even a used Camaro because in the end that's what it basically is is a car without air conditioning it doesn't ride that nice and is extremely dangerous if you're ever involved in a crash with an automobile

In California this is able to go in the carpool lane if you're a solo driver but at that price range to do the same leasing a plug in is better. Otherwise I would get this as a base trim and aftermarket the lights, exhaust, backup camera, and the windscreen with a very good Motorcycle helmet I'm set to own it if I didn't already have a motorcycle.

I drove a motorcycle in high school and college, and have wanted one ever since. No, I wanted an MGB or Austin Healey Sprite, maybe a BMW Z4, a Mini, or a Honda S2000. No, I wanted a Miata. No, I wanted a Can Am Spyder. No, I wanted an adult go cart I could drive on the road. What about a nice used Vette, Boxster, or Mercedes SL? (I couldn't consider a vehicle that costs north of $70,000.) I carefully shopped for each vehicle in my range. As I shopped, I discovered that I didn't want a motorcycle, or even a Goldwing or Harley trike. Of the true "sports cars," I really liked the Miata best, because it is so much fun to drive. I also liked the Can Am. I even checked into another 3-wheel roadster, the Vanderhall. It's really cool, and only a little more expensive than a Slingshot. Each of these vehicles has its strengths and weaknesses. But not one of these other vehicles is more fun to drive than the road-worthy go cart I bought, a 2017 Polaris Slingshot SL. Hear me out. No, it's not "practical." For that, I drive my Subaru Forester. No, it doesn't get the highest gas mileage. For that, I'd have gotten a Prius. No, it doesn't blow the doors off anything else on the road in either acceleration or top speed. For that, I'd have gotten a crotch rocket. But let me tell you this. When I was 15 and first learning to drive, I would get in the car and just drive, with no place particular to go, for the sheer fun of driving. In a few months, that feeling wore off, never to return. Since I don't race, a vehicle hum drum way to get me from here to there. But wait! I've had my Slingshot for 10 months now, and every day I have that same first joy in driving that I did back when I was 15! Why? It's a combination of things. Even completely stock, it will go quickly when I want it to, more than enough for my needs, though I have yet to test the limits. It takes to curves like it's attached to a rail, though you can drift a bit if you like. No, it doesn't have much cargo space, though I've figured out how to take a guitar, acoustic amp, and gig bag secured in the passenger area, and my tux in the cubbies behind the seats. And though I have gotten wet a few times, I've had no problems in the rain. (I do slow down a good bit, which is not a bad idea for most folks!) I'm in Middle Georgia, and get to use my Slingshot as a daily driver much of the year. I completely understand people saying it's not for them. I get it! But, man, IT IS FOR ME! Whether it is for you is up to you, and I won't call you stupid if you decide on something else. I got what I like, and I LIKE IT!

First its a dreadful horrible piece of plastic with no resale value at all.The suspension is worst than a wheel barrow .The radio its horrible cant get any radio station and the sound is pathetic. The rear view camera it a joke. The seats are too small you must be side 32 or less for a man or 10 or less for a woman. The pedals are way too close so you better be size 8 or less of foot wear.Too damn hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. The heat or the cold weather blow in your face right out of the dashboard. The oversized glove compartment is too heavy and the latch cant keep it closed. The front and the rear tires are different sizes so better get two sets of. spare tires.More over good luck trying to get this piece of crap insured.OH.. and good luck trying to change the oil filter canister.

A slingshot is not for everyone yes it is loud and the styling is crazy and only having 3 wheels makes it a true fun car or thing to drive if you know how to drive. After my experience with one it doesn't take much to spin the rear wheel and while going around turns allows one to drift very easy. There is not a car on the road that gives you the same fun factor for under $40,000. Its a pure drivers car that lets you have fun without having to go to a track it is true it doesn't have safety standards but that is what makes most cars suck today with all the extra weight with all that crap. I am sure that in a few years the slingshot will go away and its a shame because we live in a world there the only thing people seam to buy now is suv's and soon cars and especially toys like this will all be replaced by today's alternative choice to the mini van. Yes a Miata is more "practical" but it can not give you the same experience and life is just way too short to drive boring cars.

It is purely a cool toy. Using the word practical at any time in reviewing a pure toy shows that you don't understand the concept of "toy". I collect antique Brit sports cars and love that open air experience, no longer available in anything remotely new with 4 wheels. This has that classic open air feeling but can be maintained using 21st Century parts.

Seeing as you mentioned in the video to post comments about the car I thought I might add my experience with the Slingshot. I recently drove one on a recent trip to Hawaii and found it a bit of a mixed bag. I completely agree with your synopsis of it being raw and involving, however there one thing in particular I didn't like about it that you didn't mention. I found the steering feel (or totally lack of) to be a real disappointment. It felt like a first generation electric power steering system that was completely devoid of any feel/loading and made it very difficult to judge exactly whatever the front wheels were doing and how much you were asking of the front. It was that bad that it detracted from what was otherwise a very involving vehicle to drive. It had one of the worst 'turn ins' of any car with 'sporting pretensions' that I have driven. I understand part of it would be due to the single rear wheel, but the steering 'non-feel' doesn't help. Once it is turned and settled on the suspension it was quite good, but still lacking any feel.
Also to add onto your 'bang on' assessment of the exhaust on the passenger side, I will also add that exhaust fumes like to hang around in the passenger area, enough to give you a headache after any extended period of time.
Other than those points I agree with your assessment of the Slingshot. I really enjoyed driving it, but in some areas it definitely was on opportunity lost!

Would I get this if I was offered one? Probably not cus it would scare the crap out of me with how loud that belt and engine is and how that rear wheel probably wouldn’t have a lot of grip in the first place. I’d suggest Polaris do something to make the ride a bit more quieter Within the next few years if they wanna keep up in sales cus I’m pretty sure that’s what draws people away from it. Also I could imagine with all that wind coming through the windshield on how much pressure it’s gonna push against the seat belts if you had your seat belts on. Probably would leave some marks on your skin and make breathing really hard. They look fun to drive but personally I wouldn’t own one unless I wanted something to just drive through the beach on the weekends or use as a weekend getaway when me and my ex go out. Definitely wouldn’t use it as a daily driver

Basically its a fun toy with lots of flaws and annoyances and once you been round the block a few times and put a 1000 miles on it you will want to get rid of it and buy a real sports car. For the price you are being ripped off and being insulted of your intelligence by cutting all the important things out of a vehicle and charging you for a quality vehicle.

I did but the Grand Touring Slingshot last April and its well worth the money. Its a blast to drive and I am going to get a after market exhaust from Slingmods to solve the heat problem and for noise reduction along with dust reduction. Steve

Like Ken Lambert mentioned, I am older guy (+60) but as much as I like the allure of the slingshot in style and cool factor it just seems impractical. I'll probably settle for a Ducati monster instead. By-the-way, superb dissertation on the features as well as the very detailed pros and cons. Thanks Alex...

Another question for Slingshot owners out there: can you perhaps improve the rear traction by swapping for a wet-weather grooved tire and perhaps ignoring that 25lb weight limit for the rear storage compartment by deliberately increasing the rear weight over the drive tire by putting say 100lbs in weights in there? I had a friend in high school who tricked out a Volvo for racing, and one of the things he had to do was drop 75lbs in the trunk above each rear wheel to avoid spinning out, even with track tires. I'm wondering if this same trick could be applied to the Slingshot to improve safety/wet weather handling? Had anyone tried this, or can you direct me to where I can find out more about how and why it wouldn't work? I love to tinker with problems like this and try to figure them out. (Ok, so I went to uni for electrical engineer, not mechanical, but still... 😊)

Is miata also a threewheels car?

  • @jeffruebens8355
    @jeffruebens8355 5 років тому

The main competition are the Can-ams with their more snowmobile on 3 wheels look. The Can-am reliability has been terrible, however they recently came out with less expensive versions that would help pay for any repairs needed. Arial Atom is a more rare choice- a used Miata/MX-5 with rain protection, a heater and air conditioner seems a lot more practical for driving more days per year.

Great review with the exception the Miata references since it seems like your comparing it to a roadster ( a full -on car) . The sling shot is Neither a motorcycle of a car. its in a league of it's it own.. well with the TRex and other similar 3 wheeled 2 side by side seats - Its raw as you mentioned so can't compare it to a vehicle with all the amenities of a car (heat, air condition, air bags etc.. ) it's like comparing a DuneBuggy with a car.. you just can't. They have their reasons for being.. the Sling is a weekend (or weeklong) fun "mobile" - reminds me of a kid taking apart a carriage to use the wheels and making a "milk crate" go-cart (at least thats what we used to do here in N.Y. when kids ) - But just much cooler !!! Even the Can-am spider is different.. that is more like a motorcycle yet a "reversed Trike" so different than a standard trike.. Somethings just have to be set apart the the rest.. :) but if you have not ridden one of these I recommend it.. go to a Motorcycle shop that sell these when they have the "test rides" they are a blast..

I just purchased a 2018 SL a week ago, all I can say is it's a blast. I checked slingshots out for a year before purchasing mine. Mine was a demo unit which the dealership had put the widest tires on so the ride was better and it only had 250 miles. I get lots of thumbs up and have given lots of people a quick showing of the vehicle. The best is the look on their faces when you pop the hood to show the engine. I retired last year and went back to work and gave rides to all my old work buddies. I have been caught in the rain just once but even that was something my wife and I laughed about for an hour.

Wow, Alex you did a review on a Slingshot and it was excellent. There is another vehicle similar...the Can An Spyder. Would you be opened to doing a review on a Can Am Spyder?

We have a SL. No roof. We have put 10k miles on it in 1 year. Out truck now stays parked more. It is amazing what you miss around you in a regular vehicle that you see (and smell) cruising in the SS.

Whoa Alex...108ft stopping is better than a Corvette and better than any motorcycle! Motorcycles have only two small contact patches for braking.

For Con and Pro you should compare that to the T-Rex from Campagna ... and the bmw inline 6 should delight yours ears more than an Ecotec .

This thing is a blast. I commute with it. it's just like having a motorcycle, you just don't commute on rainy days and this thing is way more fun to drive than a mazada, you can rip donuts and drift corners with out even thinking. It is an absolute blast on a track as well. Yes it is a toy and not super cheap but just hold on the used market will start popping up as they become more common.

It's just too expensive. A lot of stuff that hasn't gone into the car should have made it cheaper.

I bought one a couple of months ago and I love driving it. My wife was skeptical at first but now she drives it as well. It's quieter to ride in than being on a Harley and I'm not putting down Harley riders, it's just quieter. If you don't like the wind and noise then by all means, stay in a car. Great review.
