When done right, there's a LOT kids and folks can take away from stories that have mean spirited characters who, after everything they've done and put whoever through, face the consequences of their actions, or learn from their mistakes and try to rectify what they did, like Homer Simpson indeed. Thanks, and I agree that more shows can have mean spirited characters that allow the viewers to digest what happens instead of just seeing a character act like a jerk. If done right, the viewer can leave an episode with something to reflect on while getting a few laughs out of it.

Same goes with the villains, and I mean not the generic, typical, "misunderstood" villains, but the CLASSIC villains who're so evil, they embrace being evil and them having little to ZERO remorse, makes us HATE them all the more and push us to bring them down. Case in point, the Fat Minister in Demon's Souls. That character, with his sinister, evil smile, was designed for us to HATE him, and to push us to get payback on him, only for us to be DENIED such satisfaction, as he's taken down by ANOTHER antagonist. Imagine that, my man, the frustration we feel yet that's the power of such a villain.

On TV Tropes, we have these two certain character tropes called "Jerk With A Heart of Gold" and "Good Is Not Nice", which gives off a good list of characters that are still likable as long as they're handled better. Wilbert Awdry book it adapted from, aimed to teach its younger audience about facing the consequences when they make mistakes or cause any trouble in life as well as helping others without taking anything for granted. Also, other mean-spirited characters done right that I admire for their redeemable qualities are Jimmy Hopkins, Sesshoumaru, Trevor Philips, Jay Cartwright, Will McKenzie, Johnny Gat, Revy, Zora Ideale, Noelle Silva, Jotaro Kujo, Naberius Kalego and Velvet Crowe. There are plenty of other characters with such a personality I have seen in hundreds of games, films, games and shows, but I'll keep it short, however I can definitely concur that Beavis and Butthead, Peter Griffin and Bart Simpson are great characters too.
Those are all good characters that are mean spirited but done right, they definitely have redeemable qualities to them and more shows, films, and games could learn from how those characters are handled.
Well and look at Soldier from TF2 He's harsh and mean spirited but he's supposed too be he's like Drill Sargent . plus in War times when training recruits you have to be harsh and mean spirited so that way the Recruits are Trained to be better soldiers
I miss the juxtaposition of mean/dumb ass holes and the warping American nuclear family existence in adult oriented cartoons. Aqua teen was probably the last one great one before the tim and eric satire took over adult swim (i love steve brule) but nothing else was for me. Bob's burgers for example is what you get when everything is a flavorless paste, humor has to have edge. I know i'm 9 months late, good video.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is very good and I like how characters are portrayed, they're not cool or sympathetic, at least not all the time, but if anything, they lean towards the morally grey area.

Bender is the only "mainstay" "intentionally written as mean spirited" but everyone loves him. His "outa chr" is when he aint being "intentionally mean spirited". Anyone crying about chrs being "intentionally mean spirited" clearly needs to see if there's a moral to that action threw paying attention or stfu cuz they smooth brain.
Good list of characters that act mean spirited, especially Bender, because his character being mean spirited works very well in Futurama. I agree about Chris not really being a mean spirited character, because most of the cast in Family Guy can be considered mean spirited, unless modern Family Guy did a 180 with some characters.

Hey Revenant Remnant nice 1 & also good discussion & critique of Simpson and family guy i used to watch family guy in years but now i missed the series due to i dont have sky to watch it but the best thing is i have to see the full episodes in near future newer ones but what it is as it is the gen z style so leave it there at least family guy in my own opinion outclass the Simpsons cause there line & story is lame as hell sorry but it is true.
It seems that a lot of cartoon reviewers like Mr. Enter, Jem Reviews and a few others really don't understand that these mean spirited characters like the ones in the Simpsons and Family Guy might have some reasons for being mean spirited or it's the shows way of having some humor. Not every character has to be a goody two shoe moron that fans want to punch in the face for being so nice all of the time.
Exactly, if every character was a good guy that acts goofy for cheap laughs then it would get boring fast. Mean spirited characters can help develop characters and give them someone to overcome or try to lead in the right direction, or the mean spirited character can reoccur to make a good dynamic or a foil.

I would say at least current Family Guy can be funny at times, where current Simpsons tend to be boring and forgettable.
