The MEMS mics in phones since ~2012 make nearly perfect recordings with 20Hz-20kHz FR and 120dB+ dynamic range. The limit is in the file compression. Probably better on an iPhone than others, if at all compressed, but only 192kbps mp3 playback on YT.

used to be a HUGE fan of Al; back…..40 years ago? Jeez maybe 50….but I’ve just never seen him develop anywhere past his amazing technique; GREAT guitarist, obviously but musically, just does nothing for me……

That’s raw but true. I’m waiting to see what Matteo Mancuso does with that gift that he’s been given.

By today's standards of electric guitar greats, he sounds dated, both in tone and technique. And I did own several of the albums from his Les Paul days.

There wasn't much room for him to develop as he was already amazing at 19 years old/ had the natural speed in his playing to never need 2-handed tapping acrobatics and the ability to slow down and play beautiful melodies all with killer tone and recovering from an onstage heart episode nonetheless !!!###

He did develop since his days with rtf. He did his thing with McLaughlin and de Lucia and did some great stuff there on Friday Night and Passion Grace n Fire. He did solo albums after that, some of which were unique like ciello e terra and his piazolla tango pieces which were good. That's pretty much as far as i remember... He has his unique sound and groove when playing solo n rhythm, both on acoustic n electric, and he does produce some moving, musical material here n there. Personally, i like what he did on passion grace n fire, i think his solo on sichia is great, and orient blue is beautiful composition...

Gotcha. But listen to him playing Norwegian Wood and other Beatle tunes. I never really was into him after RTF. Imo, he’s more than chops, at least at times.
