From Clapton to Slash by turning the VOLUME KNOB! 1967 Marshall Bluesbreaker + Treble Booster

- In this video I shape the tone of a cranked 1967 Marshall Bluesbreaker (JTM45) using just to volume pot on the guitar (Gibson Les Paul 1959 Standard Reissue with Wizz pickups). I'm pushing the amp with a treble booster like Clapton did on the Beano album. This amp, believe it or not, does Marshall tones from Clapton to Van Halen and Slash.
Johan is made of tonewood that’s why he sounds so damn good
Hahahaha! Cheers ;-)
If his tone gave you a wood, is that tonewood then? :D
He wakes up in the morning with tonewood. [So the legend goes-I have no first-hand knowledge.]
Thanks man, whenever I feel down I just come to your channel and watch you completely gun a vintage marshall, always cheers me up. Keep up the great videos!
Absolutely freakin amazing amp. Probably the best combo you have demonstrated on our favourite guitar-nerd channel !!!
Glad to hear it :-)
Very cool, legendary amp. Along with my absolute favorite speakers when you push them hard. Great tones!
Excellent and informative as always, Johan. I loved the slo-motion shots of the water too.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
the sound recording, mastering and tone is absolutely perfect!
Thanks, it’s great to hear that!
nice to see your playing in the middle position! incredible tone throughout. as always, come for the monster amps, stay for the monster playing!
H it sounds awesome bro I'm loving it I listen to all your stuff
I love Johan Segeborn's videos! Gets me all tingly inside!!
Keep rockin'!
I started playing in the late 70’s , I wish I kept more of these amps , no one wanted a combo or a “ old “ Gibson once the 80’s hair and thrash metal boom started , music stores used to have bunches of these piled up while everyone was buying Mesa mk 3’s and ADA mp1 preamps
Bill Shaw. Yeah now everybody wants small combos.
I guess the bedroom/studio/UA-cam guitarist are the norm now.
No one has to play with loud drummers. Or they use in-ears on stage.
@@edwardmonsariste4050 - No, every club has a PA so you don't need a loud amp to keep up with a drummer.
Douglas Bell. Not where I play shows. Either you hire out or you bring your own.
The only time I don’t have to worry about a PA is the few times in the summer where we play outdoor festivals and such.
But 99% of the time, it’s small bars and medium clubs, in which every performer provides their PA.
A 15 watt combo amp is worthless to me 99% of the time.
Bill Shaw...... gotta disagree, I've been hunting good old amps since the 60's, had a vintage guitar store in the 70's-80's, old plexiglass Marshall combos were IMPOSSIBLE to find in the states, it was hard enough to find the good old American combo amps, they were snatched up immediately when offered for sale, but the old Brit amps.....forget it, not available in the states until the launch of the internet.
@@Johngonefishin I could buy old MkIIs and AC30s all day long for 3-400 USD over here, but couldn't find more than one blackface amp occasionally. Now the plexis are all gone to bedroom players, while there are plenty of old Fender amps over here :)
Passing by Kiss "I" from Music from the Elder and Pulp Fiction 😝. It is alway a big pleasure to listen to you. Cheers.
Great riffs, great sound!
Great sounding amp, plus the guitar & you!
Sounds amazing. This may be the best sounding amp I've heard you demo.
Great to hear that!
Even though I started making & selling “Rangemasters” In 1997( before anyone else).. I have found out from sources over the years that Clapton did NOT use a booster on the Beano LP. That myth was started by “Guitarist” magazine in their Summer issue in 1996! The way Clapton’s amp was wired in the output section is why it sounded like a booster was used. The output section was wired in a “Reflective matching” mode so that the amp could actually put out a true 50 watts instead of the normal 30-35 watts. I know it works as I wired my own hand built/wired 1962 combo in that way. Thanks!
I agree. There is plenty photography of Clapton in the studio and onstage from this era where you can see the amps, and there are no shots of a treble booster anywhere.
LPCustom3 pull the termolo tube out of the amp and see how it sounds. 😉
@@blacktoothgriner Yeah, they sound alot better without that tube as it really sucks down the B+ voltage. Take it out and it soundsmuch better!
If it’s true that his amp was wired to 50 watts, as you say, then he certainly wasn’t using the 15 alnico speakers that most Beano tone chasers believe he was. I don’t see how the 15 watt speakers would’ve survived the standard 30 watt wiring for extended periods at full volume. Clapton was certainly using the amp for the Bluesbreakers gigs. Even if the 15 watt alnico originally came in the amp I think he would’ve blown them or had to change them out long before they recorded the album. I’m sure he had the amp cranked to get his badass tone. The ceramic speakers were certainly available at the time the Beano album was made. I’m thinking the alnico speakers are another Beano tone myth. I’d like to hear other Beano tone lovers opinions on this.
Shawn Glass the alnico Celestions will handle more than 15 watts. I think Celestion has always under-rated their speakers. I’ve used alnico Celestions in amps that put out 20-30 watts.
Johan is a super talented guy LOVE his vids
That is the tone man! Range Master in front of a Marshall. The volume and tone nobs respond so well.....Thanks
The JTM45 is an absolute killer amp. I’ve got a blonde bassman that I think covers a lot of the same ground
Another great demo..love these amps..i could kill myself for not getting one in the early 80s when you could find em used for cheap..and i love your scenery in all the vids!!
Glad you like it! Cheers!
That’s so boss. I just got an 18 watt bluesbreaker clone earlier this week and Looking forward to pairing it with my naga viper (Rangemaster). Great demo as always Johan! Cheers
Amazing Sound. This amp, combined with that guitar sounds incredible. I would love to hear a comparison between this amp and a new hand wired reissue. Keep rockin'
Stunning tones, great balance and super sustain...just makes that Gibson growl, Lou would approve! ...sweet !
Thanks Gerry!
Love the tones at 10:59! That led Paul they that amps, wow. Love it! Cheers.
Love the Link Wray inspired riff, Johan!
Amazing as always dude. Like the new camera angles.
Thanks, glad to hear it!
I have a new Marshall 2245/JTM45 and it's my favorite amplifier, I'm 69 years old.
It does Jimi Hendrix, it does blues, it does Jazz. It sounds good at all volumes. It's my good fortune now to have one of these. -Peter
Beautiful Johan !!! 💓💓💓👍👍👍
Thanks David! :-)
Probably the best sounding amp you've demoed in my opinion. Simply cannot beat a JTM45/Bluesbreaker.
That's the rig right there..... nothing beats it 🤘
Hi Johan!I believe it!
Plexi amps rules!Long live old school!👌🤘🎸
Cheers Peter! 🤟
Johan with the obscure KISS riff starting at 6:35... Great sounding amp! And impeccable playing as always...
Thanks man, glad you noticed the Elder riff!
Hardly 'obscure'!
Johan, thanks for posting. I have been spoiled by preamp gain for years.... just got a Germino Lead55LV and amazed at the difference of power tube distortion,,,, when cranked. I totally agree this is the way to go.......from now on as the dynamics are impossible to be replicated by pedals, preamp, etc..............
Cheers Eric
My favorite of all tones!!!
Glad to hear it
Well done and thanks for sharing brother! Be Well Johan!
Glad to hear it, brother!
If I could have any one amp JTM45 any day all day. Another great Johan video TY .
Thanks Jake!
Damn. That thing plays itself. Never harsh. Sounds on my headphones like you wouldn’t have to do a lot of EQ in a recording as well, like maybe a bit of a high pass and you’re dun. Niiiiiiiice.
Very nice tone ! A lot more grit than I thought these had. I always thought of the jtm 45 amps as being more of a clean Marshall. I heard a few new riffs here Johan : )
Thanks man, yeah some amps pull the riffs out of you. Cheers
Damn! That sounds great!
Thanks!
The overdriven sounds are amazing as expected, however the backed offed clean sounds are just as incredible. The JTM 45 clean does not receive enough praise.
Great demo I have a clone of this in a single 12 inch combo and a treble boost and maybe a clean boost is all you need from clean to mean. I use a rangemaster clone and a klon clone in front of mine roll down guitar volume for clean
What a classic combination. I was made in 1967 too, not sure I've aged as well...
Hahaha! Cheers Erik
Great amp.. your Les Paul looks as good as that Blues Breaker sounds!
Those white bobbins REALLY sets off the top !!
Cheers Jason
Lovely sounding amp. JTM45's are probably my favourite Marshall amp.
Thanks Patrick!
that'll be a fender amp then ;)
@@phill2840 not exactly, Fender was using very different parts. Many of the parts weren't aviable in the UK at that time. So Jim Marshall had to kind improvise and take what he could get.
@@phill2840 Exactly. The JTM45 circuit is an EXACT copy of the 1958-1960 Fender Bassman 5F6-A circuit. And every other classic Marshall (Super Lead Plexi, Metal Face, and early non-master JMP) is also based on the 5F6-A circuit with some minor tweaks. There would be no Marshall without the Fender Tweed amps from the 1950's, especially the 5F6-A.
@@JohanSegeborn Johan we wanna see a bassman vs jtm45 video THROUGH THE SAME CAB video :) (if possible with given output transformers)
One of the best video you made Johan! Not only because the sounds you achieve are great, as a rock encyclopaedia, but also because shows a way of playing and managing sounds that has become overlooked over the years; you manipulate what you already have and get fron clean( ish) arpeggios to searing leads, i think is great, easier, efficient, more practical and rewarding than switching over an array of boosters, drives and fuzz boxes!Cheers! \m/
Thanks Vincenzo, great to hear that!
10:28 "Shoot you in the back" - Motorhead!!!! On 11!!! I heard that man! Good Call! This guy is awesome! Great Tone dude! Like sweet tasty crunchy smooth butter!!!
Thanks man! I’m a huge Motörhead fan!
As soon as I heard that riff I couldn't think of it...cheers😁
Great sound ! Treble booster is my favorite effect.
I play with a Tokai ls200 and a palmer amp. I hope to have the Marshall one day.
Greeting from France.
Thanks, Cheers from Gothenburg!
Get one of those diy kits, but get transformers from metropoulos, i heard they're very good.
@@waldemarpierzchalski Yes! There are great DIY amp kits out there. I built an 18 watt TMB clone head from Ironworks, a defunct outfit started by an engineer in NJ. Paired with a 4x12 with 25w Celestions, it is awesome. And yes, with a Dallas Rangemaster clone I made with old germaniums from WW2 in it, the pedal wakes up the amp nicely! Great fun building this stuff, too.
I'm picturing Peter Green,Paul Kossoff,Martin Barre and Leslie West on stage right now blazing away.
Cheers Thomas! ;-)
Johan, i just picked up a bassman 500 head, this thing is killer for guitar as the old ones were, its got a lot of tones in it, would love to see you check it out!!
Great amp. Sounds just like the albums.
Glad to hear it
Aw yeah !! Almost bought one of these 30-ish years ago. Looked rough, but sounded Great, $325. I remember cuz I bought my barely used wood/wicker Mesa/Boogie Mark III combo instead that day, for 3x the co$t of the Bluesbreaker. Don't really regret it, just wish I'd bought both !!! ;)
Hahaha! :-)
Many of us have made such regrettable gear decisions in the past. The trendy stuff comes and goes, but classic, quality gear remains desirable for good reasons.
A thousand times, YES
I know the former owner of this amp. The amp was found in a barn at the countryside of Norway, and was bought for a small price.
Is all the photography yours too? Stunning sounds and so much more to look at than just another dude and his amazing collection.
Thanks, yeah it is! Glad you like it!
Another wonderful demo, Johan. I always learn something when I tune in...
If you haven't already, could you do a similar demo with an old AC30 and a treble booster? That combo is legendary, and I think you'd have a blast...
Cool, that’s what I’m working on right now actually! Minus the TB though. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn ,
Man...I hope I don't sound argumentative here, but Rory Gallagher used to use that combo to excellent effect, and Brian May's textural use of the TB into the AC30 was almost symphonic in Queen...there were plenty of others, of course (Foghat, for one), but those two standouts alone should make my case...
What a killer amp and player. Love it!
Thanks man! :-)
Spending a morning catching up on some Johan/ JTM 45 videos and found this…. Great demo of the JTM45s versatility. Did I also notice a little bit of Kiss Music from the Elder creeping in there?
This thing sounds ENORMOUS and GREAT. The first few minutes had tones straight out of “Since I’ve Been Loving You.” Proof that almost nobody needs a 100 watt plexi to get amazing rock tones, unless you need huge amounts of clean headroom, and then I’d suggest a Hi-Watt or Fender Twin anyway. Great video and great demo of a great amp. My only suggestion is that you could have done some stuff on the neck pickup, and adjusting the tone controls on the guitar (Woman Tone?)
Have you ever heard one of these amps? Just because it's not a 100W Plexi doesn't mean it won't tear your head off. Those things are extraordinarily loud.
I recommend researching John Mayalls Beano album and learn about the nightmare the techs had trying to record his [Clapton's] JTM at the volume he was playing. It bled into everything.
-- I’m quite familiar with the recording of that album and also how loud a 30watt amp can be. That’s why I said this video was PROOF that you don’t need 100 watts for huge tone. If I remember correctly, a doubling in power results in about a 3dB increase in volume, so if a 100 watt plexi can hit 120dB, a JTM 45 should be able to easily hit over 110dB given the same speakers. What’s great about this video is just how big that amp sounds in this particular vid. Still wish the neck pickup would’ve been used more, and tone on the guitar played with...
Man, I love that amp. FWIW - to my ears, there's no Rangemaster on Beano.
this why tube amps are awesome, regardless of brand design etc (granted this one more then others) just by adjusting the volume knob or adjusting your pick technique you can have a myriad of tones at your fingertips, on the fly, anywhere on stage, and let the room tell you whats needed.
Hi, Johan
I saved it on my playlist. Thank you for the link. I don't know, if I will be so tough to put those Wizz pickups, but sounds good. And honestly, burstbucker rools.:-)

Thanks Zigfrid, glad to hear that! Yeah BB:s are great too
I love the custombuckers! They sound just awesome!
Burstbuckers are cool too!
@@uplaywithfire7564 Custombuckers? I don't know, how it goes, but must be awesome!
@@siegfriedwashburn3484 the custom buckers are only obtained through buying a signature custom shop Les Paul.

I don't believe these pickups are for sale to the public individually.
But man they sound so good! Cheers! 🍺🍺
@@uplaywithfire7564 Maybe one day... :-) See you!

Nice 👍
Sounds amazing! The current theory is that Clapton did not use a treble booster on the Bluesbreakers album.
Thanks, yeah he did have a rounder tone on that one
So how did he get that tone?
@@animageofsound5351 was just the JTM 45 cranked up with his 59/60 Burst. I played one once and it sounded like that. It was 15k which is not pocket change for most of us.
@@animageofsound5351 They did have 2 settings! Full and Treble boost! PICK 1!
Johan Segeborn reflective matching in the output section coupled with Alnico Celestion T652’s.
Nice amp, but my favorite ones you did are the Tweed Bassman, and that real old Vox AC30.
That has a very nice tone. Was never into combo amps but must admit this type of 2X12 amp sounds really nice. I'm going to guess it has EL34 power amp tubes?
Best tone ever imho
Thanks Federico, glad to hear it
I was actually floored by this video demonstration......I had no idea there was such a plethora of tones to be had from a Bluesbreaker.........and by the way, keep including your super awesome scenery videos along side the regular video. Thanks again for your time Johan. Edit: was the treble boost on all the time?
Thanks! I’m so glad to hear that! On some of the darker tones the TB was off. Cheers
Johan, Any possibility of doing an amp comarison between a old Hiwatt SA212 combo (70s era) and a similar combo by Marshall, Laney, etc.?
Always been a fan of your video graph Johan, and this video is no exception. North Americans need to understand where some of their european heritage comes from to understand the city planing and architecture that we have in various cities. Great stuff.
Glad to hear that! Cheers!
Great great tones! Little bit nasal and twang....
Thanks for share
Thanks, glad to hear that!
You hit some pretty sweet Paul Kossoff tone. I'm surprised this is the first time you've played this amp stinking of Marshall's as much as you do.. and yes I know Paul's tone was a mixed bag.
I will own one of these before I die
Johan what headphones are you using and what for? Amazing video!
What kind of treble booster was used here? Do you think that this configuration could work in a small bar / gig setting with a good attenuator? Will the amp have enough clean headroom?
@Johan Segeborn does this amp have KT 66 power tubes in it in this video? This is my fav sound and not too loud like most Marshall's. I think I could get away with no attenuation or just one click down on the old Hot Plate. Also have you tried the Marshall Astoria? It is the amp Greta Van Fleet guitarist uses and he has a great tone through it live. I don't think he had it when he recorded the record but his rig rundown tone is killer. The 61 Les Paul(SG) with real PAF's sounds great through the Astoria custom model Marshall. Runs KT 66 power tubes as well.
Glad to hear it. This one has Metal base EL34 in it. We have a couple of demos of the Astoria Classic on the channel
Thanks Johan, these two circuits work so well together. Desert island Marshall? 😉
Thanks Paul! My desert island Marshall is the 77 JMP 2204 🤟
Fantastic sounds out of that amp! Old Marshalls rule!!!
Where did you shot those beautiful industrial buildings???
Thanks man! That’s in Norrköping actually!
Yep, I really enjoy the external footage you add. Atmospheric and inspiring.
@@JohanSegeborn Alright! Got to go and check that out! Have been talking a lot about the Air Force museum outside Linköping as well.
The Marshall whisperer strikes again!

Great tone ! I am surprised how low the background noise/hiss can be when dimed...! Nice flame on your LP ;) What are the pickups this time ? Cheers
Thanks! Yeah this one is very clean in that way. I have Wizz Premium Clone PAFs in it. Cheers
Those 20 watt Celestions sound amazing!
Thanks
Oh yes, a bit of "Escape from The Island" Nice. Is the Bluesbraker a 4 x 10" combo originally? I also thought about if the chassis was different with tubes at the "side" or is it like a normal JTM45 chassis? Wonderful to hear vintage Marshall as always. Ha' det bra, Johan.
Yeah that’s great album! I think the chassis is the same as for the head. Ha det gott!
Johan... Doesn't it sound better without the tuner in between?
Sounds great
I love the selmer bass rig behind too.
No this one sounds best in tjus order actually, it makes the low cut more aggressive
What’s your favorite treble booster ???
Link Ray!!
HI Johan, I think I own the same cabinet. The JTM45 in my cabinet unfortunately is a Marshall RI from '88/'89. Could you do me a flavour and measure the depth of this. According to the book its 12" but I hope yours is also 11.2"
If you would have to choose a overdrive pedal that is transparent...what model would you consider? Thinking on getting the Morning Glory or Temnus...right now I am using the Fulldrive 2 ...excellent pedal
Hi Andy, the Klon Centaur is the most transparent overdrive I’ve played. The morning glory is great too.
Johan Segeborn thanks Jo...i am running a fender deluxe reverb very clean, so I will have to check those out...mainly use the FDRR for clean jazz chords, and sometimes when I get bored I practice some easy rock stuff 😉
@@JohanSegeborn What's the story?
Tumnus, hands-down.
It's essentially a Klon but takes a step further and puts 3 band eq with vintage/hot switch. Increases voltage to something like 48v which is to say it has high headroom for a pedal.
It's one of those pedals that every guitarist must try or own in their lifetime. It really is that good.
Thx guys for the input, will take a good look at all of em 🍻
"Slash tone?" No, he has gotten some great tones, but I think this sounds better. Granted, I haven't heard *everything* Slash has ever recorded and you're not playing with a rhythm section and singer, but still...
Great tones. Curious how it sounded without the treble booster?
Thanks, some of the darker tones had no TB on it here actually
How about a video of the insane range of sounds that you could get out of a Marshall Vintage Modern. (VMs are perfect for Strats.)
@Thomas Jefferson I agree!

The amp was blown a way by you ,on top of your game as usual
Question did you as a baby start playing guitar before you started to talk ?
Thanks my friend! :-)
How bout a close up of your left hand at 4:03?
Great Tones , but they always sound better in a full mix , I've heard some isolated Clapton Beano Tones and some Slash tones and they do sound a little different out of the mix.
Johan, JOHAN. It's been clearly established that Clapton did NOT use a Treble Booster, or any pedals, on the Bluesbreaker album as stated by the Producer and Engineer on the sessions. The "rumor" that he did was started by someone in the 90's who was selling Treble Boosters, and who was sucked under by self-interest (greed). You'd have been closer to the Bluesbreaker sound wo/the pedal, try it.
Please explain the way your recording here ( c414 and m130 ? )
