  • This is an in depth demo of the Eminence Texas Heat and Lil' Texas 12" guitar speakers.
    I compare them using two different guitars, three amps and three different Cabinets. The speakers are given a workout in several different popular playing styles featuring
    guitarist and video instructor Mat Gurman.

    Yes, I agree. It is a great speaker. With a bright guitar, the Texas Heat is a great match...but it works well with Les Paul type guitars also. The Lil Texas brought out the
    sound of my PRS very well and sounds amazing in a sealed cab. Both speakers rock.
    I dont thing you can go wrong with either.

    Such nice playing! It's hard to make any speaker sound bad with playing like that.

    Thanks Adam. I can't intirely agree about that sound not being used. It is what most modern amp designers call their modern channel on current high gain amps and it is a preset for many modeling amps in the Metal setting to this day, basically a 1K cut, 4K and 400HZ boost. Regarding its longevity, it started in the mid 80's hair bands- that's 30 years at least. I still hear many players using that smiley face curve even if they are not doing it them selves with a graphic because its now a preset voicing. Thanks again

      @@MatGurman the British stuff has always been my favorites. (Vinatge 30's / Greenbacks). But there are times where the lack of bottom end is very apparent. What I like is that it has some British speaker characteristics but has that American nice tight low end....OI nly put mine in the amp yesterday, so can't wait to hear what it will sound like when she's had some more time to "break in"

    • @MatGurman
      @MatGurman  5 років тому +1

      Chuck McCrory You may be interested in the CV 75 that eminence makes. It’s designed to sound like pre Chinese (UK made) V-30. It’s a 75 watt 12”. It has a tighter bottom to my ear but still sounds like a Brit style coil. It’s a ceramic mag. 🎶

    Possibly the best video I've seen on tone. Wow, awesome playing. I play both pedal steel and guitar so my tone choice is clean, cleaner and slightly distorted for today's country. I like both speakers but the Little Texas wins for weight purpose.

    Wow! Your style of playing ranges clear across the board, from Chet Atkins, to Eddie. I was actually waiting for some Mark K. Sultans of swing. Which I know would kill It. That being said. Thanks for the comparison of the two speakers. It helped out immensely in my research for a 2x12 cab that I'm modifying to best suit my style of playing. Upon listening to many Neodymium magnet speakers. I tend to find they are not only Liter in weight. They are also slightly tighter than a ceramic magnet speaker.My cab is a vertical closed backed (thanks for that demo), so I'm leaning towards the Lil Texas, Paired with a Tonkerlite. Both speakers are rated at 101.1db sensitivity each, and combined weight of the speaker cab would weigh in at less than 40lb's. Both speakers are 125Watts as well. That being said. No wonder I'm seeing all these used 4X12 cab's for sale at rock bottom prices. Thanks again for a quick picking lesson as well.

      zpottsy Thanks so much for the kind words! There is a new neo Eminence makes that is very neutral called Wheelhouse 150. I put it in a Boss Katana 100 to cut the highs a bit....perhaps too much. I still like the Lil Texas the best!

    • @zpottsy
      @zpottsy 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks again for the reply Mat. Upon further research I discovered that Eminence also has a Neo speaker based on the Electro-voice speaker EV12L. The Eminence EM12N. It is a flat based signal speaker that I feel might be ideal for Mod Amp Systems, like the Boss Katana Amps. As for the Katana Amp. I had to get two MK2 100 heads to run the stereo part of a wet/dry/wet amp system. That being said. I think I'm going to try a Lil' Texas paired with the EM12N to get a great balanced across the board tone. Thanks again Mat

    Texas heat has more mid compression
    Lil Texas has smaller dispersion of lows which emphasizes highs

    • @MatGurman
      @MatGurman  6 років тому +2

      Oscar tapia Thanks for the info, very interesting and it sounds like that subjectively too! I now gig mostly with the Neo’s because they are so incredibly easy to move around. Also, the slightly reduced low mids and lows work well in a rhythm section situations where a stage and room can get swamped with low end. I like em both but for frequent gigging,
      Neo’s are really a great way to go. If I was playing a solo guitar gig I would opt for the ceramic version for the added fullness.

    I appreciate the demo. I have both speakers. I found the Texas Heat to be a "Better" Vintage 30 I only mean that in way it handles distortion perfect but the Teas heat is So much warmer and fuller definitely less harsh than a V30. I found the Neo version to be tight bright and with a punchy "voice" Both respond well to full volume playing on my 40 watt KT88 powered Plexi circuit Frenzel.

    • @MatGurman
      @MatGurman  2 роки тому +2

      Have you checked out the CV75? Its very much like a UK make V30 coil and handles more power. The weight of the Lil TX Neo is pretty amazing, enough so that I use it more often but I like the TX heat a bit more between the two.

      @@MatGurman I like the Texas Heat better than the Neo but I used the NEO in a combo for years simply because of it's light weight. Now I have gone full circle and use EV 200 watts, zero break up.

    • @MatGurman
      @MatGurman  3 роки тому +1

      If you have a dark sounding amp you may like the neo version a bit more but they would both work. The Lil Texas has less bottom to my ear so it tends to speak a bit brighter. That said, some of the UK series would work well also. I recently put a CZ 75 in a closed back Birch 112 and it’s really nice. That one sound a lot like an older Vintage 30. But, yeah either Tex will be plenty of highs available with the little Tex a bit less Bassy. I hope that helps- Mat

    • @MatGurman

      Hi. Sorry I did not see your question sooner. I have one lil Texas in an open back and one in a closed back. They both sound good and compliment each other but I am preferring the closed back. I have also always liked the “legend”. It’s inexpensive and very solid. Recently I tried a newer neo called the “wheelhouse”in a modeling combo and it adds less color to the sound which was good for that amp which had harsh highs. It’s easy to go crazy with speakers. It really depends on what kind of rig and sound you are after. That being said, I don’t think you could make a bad choice with any of the ones here unless you are trying to change something about the sound you are getting (cleaner, dirtier, brighter, darker) in which case you can choose a speaker with those qualities. If I had a 212 cab I would load 2 Lil Texas or or one lil Texas and one Texas Heat. If I wanted to tame the highs I would use one Lil Texas and One Wheelhouse for a more neutral sound but you will loose some of the more aggressive highs. I hope that is some help.🎶
