This was definitely confirmation that Chris made the right decision to retire when she did. No titles in 1989 after 19 straight years with at least one title and an astonishing 157 titles total. It was time to hang it up. She waited to turn pro until she was 18 and as the result, debuted at number 4 on the rankings and ended her career at number 4 as well. She was never ranked below 4 in twenty years. That feat has no chance of being matched. You'll never see another one like Chris Evert, no matter how long you live.
I think watching Chris play is something you really appreciate as you mature and understand the game better ....like a fine glass of wine Depth, Width, and that classic wrong footing her opponent... Sort of like the lady you meet at mid week ladies tennis and then a coffee after
Zina said about this match that her original idea was to play all out serve and volley attack, but Sherwood Stewart said to her that Chris would love the pace and the constant target. They decided that it would be better to give Chris absolutely no pace whatsoever and make her work for everything. It really started to work once Zina had got over her initial nerves. Towards the end, Chris's game started to fall to bits.
I just happened to come across this and had forgotten all about Zina Garrison. I remember now how she swung her arms while waiting to receive serve. I'd never seen any other player do that before or since!
I always had a tough time watching Zina. She wasn't the toughest mentally and would let nerves overtake on many occassions. However, she did have a very solid career. She won 14 titles and beat all the best at one time or another.
@@seensay2132 that and mental , she always seemed to get the big names in trouble but would fold, but her best year was 1988, late to end of 1989 where she reached number 4

Chris said after the match that it was one of the reasons she was retiring. She said that we you get older, inconsistency sets in. you can play some amazing matches like Chris did against Monica, then come out very flat in the next match. I think that also explains some of Roger Federer's losses in recent years
Great game plan from Zina to force Chris to create pace and make her lose patience. At this stage of her career Chris had days where she was impatient and lacked the fire in her belly.
In the late summer of 1989 when CE made the announcement that the USO would be her last event (she still was committed to Fed Cup 2 weeks later and won all 5 of her matches in straight sets which means she left the tour winning her official last match) the USO treated CE very normally which CE matches played at daytime not grandstanding her like in 2021 Serena Williams when they placed all her matches at night . CE went out quite unceremoniously to tell you the truth, allowing her Tennis to being the focal point and not herself. Sadly in Sept 2022 the media made it ALL about Serena Williams and no so much about tennis. Also it was so great to see Mr.and Mrs Evert applaud Zina Garrison efforts at match point . Beautiful people were the Evert's. And CE hugging ZG as they walk off the court together, true professionals . In 1987 Q's vs L McNeil, the chip n charge game kept CE off balance thus McNeil d Evert in 3 sets on the grandstand court and in 89 Z Garrison 1 handed slice and chip n charge and serve/volley kept CE off balance thus ZG def CE in the Q's of the 89 USO
Point taken. But difference in Eras and honestly a sign of just how far the WTA has come in 30 yrs. CE is an icon, a legend and trailblazer. Corporate America loved her. What a difference with today's tennis. Not so much power, just pace, strategy, mental toughness, i like this women's tennis ... even to the times when Steffi arrived. But the William's sister's changed it all, and women's tennis become more about power ...
The Williams Sisters also ushered in better athletes to the tour now. Cross training, mental toughness, and more lower ranked players not simply cowering to the stars. Long gone are the days of mousey 5’4 players living off top spin and moonballs. The game has graduated to speed and athleticism in addition to power, angles and bigger serving.

Chris was beating players consistently up until 1989 because all of the ladies on tour were playing patty-cake tennis until Martina came along. Venus and Serena changed the women's game, and professional tennis in general when they brought the element of power to the sport.
