It was Martina's first Wimbledon win and first grand slam win. Two great legends who showed why in this match with some incredible play, especially with those wooden racquets. Evert was so gracious in defeat and she was genuinely happy for Martina, knowing it was a first grand slam win. Fantastic stuff. They would play a lot of slam finals in their prime.
INTERESTING TIDBIT: Martina wore what she called her "lucky dress" in the final, but it almost didn't happen. Before the final, Wimbledon officials informed Martina that they would not allow her to wear the dress for the championship match because it did not adhere to their rule that clothing must be at least 80% white. Martina started crying, and told everyone in the locker room of what had transpired. Billie Jean King was there, and when she saw this, she marched to the Wimbledon committee to confront them about their edict. She returned to the locker room an hour or so later with a smile on her face and told Martina that the committee had changed their mind and that she could indeed wear her "lucky dress".
@@charleskristiansson1296 The players were graceful in terms of their personal manners as well. I like the way the umpire didn't have to call "time" during the breaks because the players just returned to the court themselves, usually well before 2 minutes were up.
There have been pure hearts in this world. I didn't care much for Chrissie until recently when I started watching these old clipses. Now, I'm head over heels for her. Absolutely graceful, lovely, attractive human. I can't even comprehend how she was also so successful in the game. Reminds me of Zidane in football
I just got interested in tennis this year, and I attribute it to two things: 1. Iga Świątek’s 37 match streak 2. My dad telling me about the time that he and my mom got to watch Martina Navratilova practice in the 1980’s, which subsequently took me down a rabbit hole of her matches and made me become obsessed with the game. It’s for these reasons that I think I tend to be slightly more interested in the WTA, past and present (though I do love the men’s game as well).
A time when there was still manners on court, love this final but Chris should have won,her class and humbleness in defeat is in itself a triumph and her genuine joy for Martina is something today's players could learn from, also nice to see skill with rackets used and not technology winning games.
Martina totally deserved this victory although was lucky to get there after she looked at certain defeat in the semi final against evonne before the dramatic injury

Just realised Chris Evert is the first female player(might just be the first player of any) to use double handed backhand. She started playing tennis at 5, when it's too hard to hold the racquet with one hand. Her father let her use two handed backhand as a transition, but she would keep using it throughout her career. Some people would argue Connors, but Connor's backhand is a mix between single handed+double handed.
They hit so hard! Technology has made it a different game. Not better or worse, just different. Men use the drop show a lot now, chokes up those heavy hitters.
that's why Evert's record is so amazing.with a relatively weak serve, she got to 10 Wimbledon finals and several finals in Australia(when it was on grass).
Some of these fault and out calls were questionable. How much of a difference does the technology make now days. Would love to see players today play with those rackets and balls

Dr Len Welch: Chris Evert wasn’t intimidated in my opinion because she didn’t have the weapon to hurt Navratilova’s game on grass, despite of two wins here against her. Interesting. In 1995 they brought in the "almost completely white" rule which meant that that type of dress certainly wouldn't have been allowed.
I can see why women's tennis in the 70s and 80s was more popular than today.
It had class and finesse not the slugfest aided by technology we have today.
