I remember when Ryan started making videos on Battleship New Jersey and was somewhat hesitant and sometimes seemed uncomfortable. I really like that he is supporting the curator of Battleship Texas Battleship Texas. The more practice this man gets the better he will become at presenting the history of this United States Legend. And then the both of them can help other curators explain and promote their Museum ships.
It's genuinely heartwarming that the staffs of different warships work with each other rather than against each other. Teamwork makes dreamwork!
Ryan is a True Ambassador for the Preservation of Historical Ships
All of you guys preserving these ancient floating cities rock! BB-35 is finally getting the lovin' she deserved from the start. I used to avoid Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake so I wouldn't have to drive past that rusty mildewed, but otherwise flight ready Saturn 5 laying on it's side. Update: They built a shed around it and charge a modest admission now. Hallelujah!
Raccoons were occupying Huntsville's Saturn V before it went indoors.
The Saturn V exhibits in Huntsville and Kennedy are awesome to see.
The battleship New Jersey was offshore firing for us when I was in Vietnam. The battleship Texas was offshore at Casablanca when my father was going ashore in WW2.

Seems to me fellows, there’s a little bit of animosity to one another. But they seem to get through it. A who’s gun is bigger kind of thing! I do enjoy watching all of these segments, Iowa, and Texas. And both ships are a great ship in there own way. I really appreciate all that you both do. Thanks guys! For sharing and all the knowledge from both of you guys!
Great to see Ryan and Travis presenting . Two great ships from different eras and there are some really good videos on both ships . I'd also include Tom Scott ( The older one ) for Texas . Given the challenges of preserving these leviathons the exchange of knowledge is vital and the technical skills need to be passed on .
Tom Scott (The older one) is very knowledgeable and his videos are very informative. Would like to see him here too.

Please do! It will make for some real cool saluting guns for special occasions, like the secondaries of HMS Belfast in London (the IWM also fires Belfast's main guns on special occasions, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did so for this week's upcoming coronation of King Charles III).

Thank you for these videos. I think these 5" guns work like a 105mm or the bigger 155mm with the sliding breach. I think the 120mm main gun in the Abrams tank works like that too as opposed to the rotating breach ni the 16" guns.
The 3" has a sliding breech. The 5" an interrupted screw breech plug.
Nice work their are also other coatings that may cost less than Nickle plating like DLC (diamond like coating) that offer great protection minor pit filling and cost much less. BZ keep up the great work.

If you can You should . I saw U.S.S. Ranger Cv. 61 in Dry dock (1978?), An amazing sight , if you can go under the Hull even more amazing. Sadly I forget exactly when . I was a Bt2
Some of those parts can be spray welded and remachined to look perfect.
I was going to say something similar. They can do the same thing with laser metal printing. They did the something similar for an old F4U Corsair were they reprinted the surfaces of all the valve faces because they had been reground so many times that they were too thin to work to remove the corrosion on them, so they literally reprinted the valve faces with a metal printer and brought them back up to the original specs and worked them from there.

The mushroom is called an Obturator . It’s shape is made to conform with the barrel with crazy hot high pressure gases caused by firing to seal the breach and direct all the gases towards the muzzle of the barrel . 😊
While you are correct that it is part of the obturator, the term "mushroom" is legitimate due to its frequently use in old Navy ordnance manuals. While it closely conforms to the back of the chamber, the mushroom itself doesn't seal the breech. There is a pad made of canvas, asbestos and tallow that was sandwiched between the mushroom and face of the plug that served as the gas check. Chamber pressure from firing pushed the mushroom back so that it compressed and swelled the pad. The swelling is what sealed the breech and made it gas tight until the shell left the muzzle and pressure dropped.
The “mushroom” technical name is the spindle. The obturator sits on the collar behind the head of the spindle. This technology is still being used with artillery pieces today. Now the materials used to make obturator bands have changed but still works the same way you explained. Nowadays, the obturator band consists of a split ring then rubber composite band and then another split ring.
The 3"50 breech block is essentially a large Sharps .45-70 drop-block. Very cool!
One area of the ship that has eluded any exploration online is that 2-3 story building-like structure at the top of the main mast. A very familiar structure as was so prominent on USS Arizona and the 1941 era USS Nevada. I'd love to take a journey up in there...

Would you consider having the pitting welded and machined down to bring the artifact back to its original specifications? Or is it more important in your opinion to leave it as-is?
What would be your consideration for and against such repairs?
it would be badass if battleship Texas could fire her guns one more time after she's fixed up

Damn that went by quickly, great to watch these collaborations between fellow museum ships. The exchange of information, ..are knowledge bombs to most, if not all of us, to absorb and enjoy. Explaining the transition methods of preservation for the different eras does nothing but strengthen the ability to keep these gallant ladies of the sea around longer for generations to enjoy.

Is that breach erosion entirely from corrosion, or did gas blowby contribute to it similar to how small arms can have small amounts of breachface erosion from gasses getting past a primer?
Not sure about calling that a mortise. At least in the woodworking world that would be a groove or slot. A mortise is a recess that doesn't typically extend to the edge of the part. Maybe it's different in gunsmithing?
It's called a mortise on guns.
3”50 was electrical firing pin if I remember what I was told.
That was probably the 1950s version with the automated mount. They were different in many ways to the earlier marks of 3-inch/50.
I am not aware of any modification of the 3"/50 cal ever mounted on Texas that was electrically fired. They are all percussion.

When will yall start re installing the guns back on the Texas
the 5" guns will be put back on while were in dry dock but probably after more of the exterior painting is done so they dont get too messed up. The rest of them can be easily craned on either on land or via floating barge.

Breech. The spelling breach means a gap or opening, as in a fence.

How do museum ships deal with the cannona from a legal aspect with federal law? Ie destructive devices, automatic cannons, etc. Are they registered or exempt?
When demonstrating the firing mechanism, you had a spent cartridge in the chamber. Was that just to demonstrate loading and extraction, or do these guns have issues with dry-firing empty?
The 14" guns should totally be restored so they can fire again. Beurocrats, tax collectors, random civvies complaining about noise, 14" is the answer. Anything less is cowardice.
I despise historical societies. They should not have the ability to dictate what someone does with their own property.
Who knows, it's probably some regulation that prevents the ship from being altered far beyond reasoning.
It is meant for preserving the ship, not making drastic changes to the ship itself, although I may not know anything about that...
@@GameMaker3_5 I was talking in general. It goes for buildings as well. If I buy a building it should be mine to do with as I want and not stuck preserving it. The same goes for museums. When the acquire items it now belongs to them. Just my view is all.

If you noticed he was there in support of the Battleship Texas curator. Ryan stood back and let the man talk, but when he seemed to have a snag Ryan would ask a pertinent question that that he could answer as he was talking to a colleague rather than making a video. I'm very pleased to see this.
