Thinking in terms of fish durability, I was initially considering catfish, but Koi is tempting because it I would avoid dealing with the regulatory issues of food production.
We have a large mouth bass bred in CA called black bass that can take pellets. They are somewhat skiddish, usually require experienced fish farmers and aren’t readily available everywhere outside of the live food markets.

If you’re not selling fish they are pets. Nothing wrong with catfish, it’s just carp or koi make thing so much easier.

What fish are common where you are? Id guess Tilapia. Any novel species?
Good Video. I am not sure if bass can be kept captively in CA, but largemouth bass are popular hydroponics fish where I am at.

The catfish also have a toxin on it skin and a venom in its dorsal and pectoral spines that's why they can cause a bunch of pain.
I really want to farm crucian carp in San Diego, CA but I can't seem to find any providers, do you know of any?
Yes, most people farm a hybrid carp which is a goldfish x carp hybrid. They lack barbells which is preferred in the marketplace. Are you in SD County?

I’m not a big fan of catfish in smaller systems unless they are pets. Someone always gets stuck!!!
