- In this video I discuss the key concepts to maintaining a healthy recirculating aquaculture system that you should know. These key RAS concepts include water quality management, water treatment, oxygenation, feeding, biosecurity, and maintenance. The difference between a closed recirculating aquaculture system and semi-closed ras fish farming is discussed along with the factors that impact water quality in RAS fish farming.

Really like the video. Our farm is somewhere in between a closed loop system and semi-closed loop system. Nitrate build up is definitely an issue though. I have been recently trying humic acid and seeing how that affects the biofilters and all 3 nitrogen species. I am hoping to one day add aquaponics as I do not have a huge abundance of water.
How are you farming? Using ponds or tanks?
@@ThisIsAquaculture We are an indoor RAS system. This past winter we have been achieving around 98% recirc but we are getting to the point that we will need to do some water change.
98% is impressive regardless if it's in the winter. How much water do you need to top off through regular evaporation? Are you using media beds to capture solids?
@@ThisIsAquaculture We use a drum filter to remove solids. We are able to calculate how much water is leaving the system through the drum filter. Due to the fact that we repurposed an existing building that had cisterns for rainwater capture and we turned one of the cisterns into a filter, we are unable to measure replacement water. We have a one way valve from other cisterns into the filter so they get topped off by rainwater, snow melt or well water. I can monitor the water levels of the filter and cisterns but I would say because we tend to close things up in winter so our air exchange is limited, water loss due to evaporation is minimal. I loved your video. Very well done. I do have one question/comment. Isn't ionized ammonia LESS toxic to fish, as it cannot pass over the gill membrane as easily? Unionized ammonia binds to the gills and can kill the fish. In your video, according to your graph, there is more UNionized ammonia as the pH becomes more basic, which would mean it is MORE toxic to fish. Can you please clarify? Thank you.
Your correct!! Unionized is way more toxic… I’ll have go back and double check my video… it possible I said that wrong!!! Is like way more toxic. Not sure I can fix it if I did say that wrong other than put it in the video description…
