Peter Windsor: Verstappen Only Cares About Winning!

  • In this interview with ‪@peterwindsor‬ we discuss Max Verstappen's generational performance in the F1 2024 season, what made it so special and how was Verstappen's fourth championship different to the other three. Was the Brazilian Grand Prix the best drive of Max Verstappen's career or the best wet weather drive ever? What does Verstappen do that is different to other drivers in his response to journalists' criticism of him? How did Lando Norris lose the championship and was Lando Norris more at fault that his team McLaren? Should Zak Brown and Andrea Stella take some responsibility for all of Lando's lost points and will Lando Norris be able to come back stronger in F1 2025? Did Mercedes sabotage Sir Lewis Hamilton in Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying by having Lewis set his final hot lap in traffic or did Lewis make another costly mistake in qualifying? What does ‪@peterwindsor‬ think about George Russell's comments that Lando Norris should've kept the fight for the F1 drivers' championship going to the very last round and that in F1 2025 George Russell intends to do what Lando Norris could not. ‪@Peter‬‪@peterwindsor‬ talks about Charles Leclerc and says whether he thinks Leclerc was justified in his outburt at the Las Vegas Grand Prix and what does Charles need to do to fix this in F1 2025.

I'm sorry, "NONE of it Lando's fault"????? What the ! Mostly ALL of it was Lando's fault. The teams job ends when they give you the fastest car and are there to change your tyres. Rest is all up to the driver, and all the balls dropped at Maclaren have been balls dropped by Lando. Poor starts, poor defence, it goes on

Max Verstappen is indeed one of the all time greats. Not because he won 4 titles now, not his amazing skills in the rain, not his insane season in '23 but this year he showed how amazingly talented this lad is. As he said in an interview on Dutch telly: this one I am really happy about cause I showed I can do it also without having the fastest car.

Without the fastest car.... for the whole year...
21 and 24 combine for a really GOAT type career already when you also have 2 totally dominating years too.

Just look how he totally demolished Perez. Every-single-time the gaps where huge. Its not only a difficult car.. Both have the same gear. But max can setup the car better to his liking> that is also a talent. Feeling what is wrong with the car. I think he can better feel a car than Lewis. You see it now with Russell. Both have same car but i must say, Russel is doing a better job than Lewis.

@@edgardoMurnia you can question if perez side as the same quality engineers as max had. Maybe Max's his engineers were better. Maybe if you have two engines with one delivering a few more hp's , Max would get that one.. I can agree on that. But RB has many times stated that the cars are equal. I think the second half of the year Perez drove with other specs.. Max didnt like the new floor. Perez did, so he used it, max didnt. So they were able to choose their own specs and setups. Then why did he constanly was soo much behind max? Not only in the race. You cannot compare that (when you have to overtake you ask more of your tyres) but qualifing is equal for everyone.

Max is such a great driver because he lives and breathes racing. Where others unwind in a club or on a beach or a yacht, Max jumps in the simulator and races his friends. And not just in open wheel formulas, but also in GT cars, hypercars, etc. He knows how to be fast in any car. Given half a decent car in 2026, I would expect him to be the first driver to know and feel exactly how to drive these new cars on the limit and extract the most from them.
This sim racing is a great tool to learn how various vehicles react in different situations.

Max reminds me more of Michael Jordan’s mentality than almost any other athlete. If you piss him off, he keeps receipts and he’ll remind you of what you said. Every time somebody says something nasty he’s gonna use it as fuel. It’s in the best interest of his opponents to not do that.

It's blindingly obvious that RB strives to be no 1 at strategy calls - the rest just go through the motions. If the team lets Max down, you hear about it for a second - but they review it and don't make the same mistake.
I think Max's debrief performance - the way he slices and dices every performance even if he does well, better than expected etc. is beyond anything else we've seen.
I think he asks different questions like:
    - could a call have resulted in a better finish?
    - could we have data earlier on to take advantage of that in hindsight?
    - was there a way to ensure an easier victory?
    It's just on another level.

As good as Oscar is, and as great as Oscar could be in the future. I don’t think he’d be as close to George as he was to Lando.
And I’d also say this, George has been tested again the 🐐 in Sir Lewis Hamilton. And is doing very well.

Perhaps not on pure race pace, since Lando is absolutely rapid and George still has more shows to give to get on par there. But overall awareness/ strategic and all, George is probably above many out there on the grid. George might be a healthy mix of Lando on pace and Oscar in other things.
Perhaps a tiering model should be created over what has been seen this season.

McLaren weren't disappointing at all. They didn't have the car this week and 5th and 6th was always the best they could do. Oscar didn't deserve a penalty as he wasn't over the line. Windsor still bringing up McLaren getting rid of Riicciardo and bringing up Hungary and Monza is laughable. He's a petty old fool.

Charles is furious because he cant beat and out qualify Carlos adding that he is expecting the team will give him a better tuned or optimized or shall I say a superior CAR than Carlos to show the F1 world that he is faster than anyone else in the grid let alone to Carlos before Lewis joining next year. Now how he can expect Ferrari to favor him over Lewis if in the last few races he was besten most of the time by an underrated driver who is leaving the team whom he thought should not get those favorable results. Peter is right about his over ranting after the race, that its a combine frustrations from him but I guess he has some grudge to Carlos from over taking him and showing disrespectful that he is fast if not the fastest among them. But Kudos to the World Champion that until the end he didn’t crack instead he showed to his peers that he is the best among them from wet to dry his skills and driving talent is far superior than anyone even he has an inferior or a slow CAR but can still find a way to win and fullfil his goal that is to win the Championship. That is the mindset of a true Champion. Next year he’s still the man for me to win his fifth .

The conversation around Verstappen and his place in the record books is so interesting. People have been forcing the argument that he’s “one of the greats” even before he won a single championship. While it is clear Max is extremely talented, these discussions so often ignore the fact that 1.) his teammates have never been allowed to challenge him 2.) for many of his championships, the stewards have disproportionately ruled in his favour and contrary to the established rules of the sport 3.) his team has been allowed to get away with several instances of cheating (e.g., cost cap infringements and asymmetric braking) that have given him significant competitive advantages. While many of the “greats” have had one or more of these advantages, none of them have had them all. Yet, so many people are unabashed in calling him “the best the sport has ever seen” and a “great”. He might very well be, but why has he needed all of these advantages to succeed? No one ever seems to ask that question or seek to answer it. To me, the bar has always been too low for someone as talented as he is.

He had had the most flawless, most dominant, best individual drivers season of all time while there have been way more dominant cars in the past (w11, mp4, w08, f2002) and now in 2024 he’s won the championship while being in the third quickest car for the majority of the season.
