I think it’s still a (ROAD) lifestyle specialty with good (but not always great) hours, and amazing compensation (especially if you go IR with all the cool procedures they get to do now)! I’d love to as well, but 1-2 IR docs have cancelled on me. I’m still trying though!
I think it’s a good specialty especially if you like pharmacology and CVP physiology. It is generally known to be a solid lifestyle specialty (though CRNAs do pose some competition), but the hours aren’t the greatest at some places. The hard parts are usually at the start and end of a surgery (like a pilot), unless the case is really complex. It’s also nice to be able to observe a lot of surgeries without having to be a part of them for some people. I’d suggest checking out one of my anesthesiology resident videos and shadowing if possible. I liked more patient interaction and an active coaching/mentoring role with patients so it wasn’t my cup of tea but it could be yours.
What about it? There’s a high attrition rate, higher tuition/fees, it’s harder to make it out & match, and the likelihood of getting a mainland residency especially if it’s competitive is more difficult, but if you can’t get into a mainland US/DO program it’s a reasonable option
