Krissy a good thing about schist is that if you work it on its line of strike ( eg. Nth/ Sth). from the point where it dips below the surface, ( if it does) it usually fractures off in layers or slices similar to slate. It is surprising how much gold can work it's way between these layers to then be flattened out (just like the pieces you were finding) when the layers close up again due to flooding, weathering & erosion backfilling any gaps. As with all rock the expansion & contraction of heat 🥵 & cold 🥶 fracture the schist which breaks away releasing the flattened gold . A standard size pick & a crowbar are a must for a bit of layer breaking & those big chunks of rock make excellent pivot points & wedges.
Happy hunting when you return to that patch & given that gold is still there on the worked ground there might just be a bonanza waiting to be uncovered. Good luck & keep swinging.

I chuckle at 'only a little piece', compared to 'huge piece' for the same size lump on other web sites.
The 6000 would be better choice of detector on that ground as long as it runs quiet. The 6000 has very sensitive edges of the coil compared to the NF12 which is more towards the middle of the coil. The 6000 is way better for nudging up to the big rocks which may hide the nuggets underneath. Once you go over the big rocks with the NF12 it won't pick them up from the height. This was proven by a mate who got 10g of species under a big rock on my patch. Good luck any way.

I'm wonder what is a good detector for just someone starting out but on the other hand not junk. Where I live is mountain and desert. Love watching all the different locations you go too. Another country I'll never see but here.

Some of my best finds have been in areas littered with nails. Other detectorists didn’t have the patience nor the equipment to persevere.

Hi Rodney, although I have used the DD coil a few times lately (I like it a lot) it's not the new coil that I'm testing. It's a powerful mono coil that was released recently 😉
Very entertaining, thank you. I was a licensed jeweler about 40 years ago but that was only because I wanted to buy cheaper raw materials for my hobby, My mom and her friends bought all my gold/silver bangles/rings and I had a lot of fun with a Wilkenson??? table top lost wax kiln/kit that was so precise (with correct investment) that you could see the veins on the leaf that was cast. You should save all the mini nuggets that can be used in the jewellery trade.
How about leveraging dowsing before using a metal detector? It would help reach out to some good sized nuggets.... Just a suggestion 😉

MMMMM, Clint did seem to have more luck than you or was it the different detector, it appears to be starting dry out over here in the NT got five tiny bits of gold today in my sleush, tried to go of track with my backhoe the other day and as soon as I was off the track the rear wheels started to spin so it still needs to dry out heaps, I can't wait to start detecting again I think it will be a good year over here this year, have a good day. Did you see the video Tassie boy prospect put out 4 days ago he came over to Australia to do some underwater sniping he did pretty good I am surprised you haven't tried it 👍
Sniping is something I haven't had the chance to try yet. There is no permanently flowing water here, as soon as it rains, the creeks are filled with brown muddy water which disappears again after a few days.
I don't know where he went but the water was clear but I'd still be worried about the crocodiles over there if I was him LOL
