Hi Jacob, My name is mike stand and I play in a group called the Altar Billies from California. We play traditional rockabilly music but i like to write a lot of train songs including the unofficial theme song for Big Boy 4014 (Ballad of the Big Boy) . Currently we are working on a song to honor the restoration of locomotive 1309, and wanted to ask if we could have permission to use some of your footage for a youtube video to celebrate the return of this awesome locomotive. Please feel free to have a look at our youtube channel to verify that we love train!s!. Thanks in advance for considering - Mike
Hats off the the WM for getting her up and running! This was definitely a big undertaking, but as per usual, the WM pulled through with expected professionalism!
Sounds like the local volunteer FD siren. My hometown has one also, but it sounds a bit different. Some are said to be former Cold War warning systems so it makes since they'd sound like them.
@@thunderbird1921 OK Thanks! Have not heard one of thoze since I was a kid down in San Diego, California visiting my Grandmother. Every once and a while they'd blow the old Air Raid sirens. That was in the 1960s...
Well, as UP is no longer running the 3985 Challenger, that would be about as big as a double header could get. I have a feeling though that UP wouldn’t go along with it.
Only if the dm&ir 227 could move under her own power as well. Very cool to see this old girl move under her own power in probably over 60+ years. Iit looks like the diesel was helping and doing most of moving for her. It looks like she can barely move under her own power sadly.
I love that this footage shows people for scale. What a monster! BTW, does anybody happen to know whether the C&O H6 (1309's class) is more powerful than the N&W Class A? 1309 is a Mallet compound, while 1218 was just a simple articulated of slightly larger size.
@@thunderbird1921 Since compounds reused expanded steam in 2 of 4 cylinders, they were maybe more efficient but I would say that the simples made more power since all cylinders used high pressure steam.
For some reason I thought 1309 had a multi-chime whistle. This one sounds like the one from N&W 1218, but a little lower in pitch. I love 1218, so this is A-OK with me! So glad to have more steam running in the East.
"a good clip" is very much a relative term for a Mallet compound loco-- their slow maximum speed was a major reason they were never very common and used generally on slow coal drags. Still a marvelous machine and a marvelous restoration on very limited resources.
that is not necessarily the case, while it may be true, the locos pump may just me louder just like #26 at steamtown. They seem to be on a flat area so i don't see why it would run so much.
That's an interesting sounding whistle, it sounds like it has a step in the middle of the valve with a second stage or something.

Sterling m5 or m10 possibly
@@JungleYT it sounds like a Pennsylvania railroad banshee whistle!
@@tylergreen4843 What's that?
Thanks to trains magazine to help raised
the $100,000 to finish 1309
Major piston rod packing leak on engineer side high pressure cylinder.
Is there any chance of 1309 working with 4014? That would be a great Christmas present. Awesome work by all involved. One Aussie fan happy.

I’ve had a love of steam since a kid as a 16 year old I hope in my many years I get to see more of steam my favorite rn is the T1 trust
When I was born in the late 50s it was being phased out... Yeah, that T1 Trust is a fascinating project
But they just tired to broke mallard record
Is anybody know what’s going on with the 1309 at the moment?
What’s the news on 1309? I haven’t heard much since January.
They have to replace the track so they can safely run it

@@youraveragejoe2 Last I heard was a few months ago, when it was taken to a rail fair somewhere, and went back. So id assume yes.
There expecting a mid summer debut of 1309, while 734s future remains uncertain, we can be happy that their at least running a steam locomotive!
Will 1309 be pulling summer excursions?
hey.. i wanted to ask.. will this loco fit on the turntable. there was some concern it might be to long
Yes, it does, but there is overhang.
As long as the wheels fit there should be no problem
Someone should find out if the PowerBall winner from Maryland is a rail fan. The rail yard needs some work

Does 1309 burn coal or oil ?
Originally built to burn coal and still burning coal.

It's actual whistle is a Hancock 3 chime. This whistle is making a guest appearance
This is a huge locomotive in every way. Can’t wait to see it going at a good clip with a loaded train.

The horn like N&W 1218
OMG... Did the fireman just toss a styrofoam cup off the platform in this clip (10:05 mins)
May have fallen out accidentally
A doubleheader with 734 and 1309 would be awesome!
Be patient

The C&O #1309 is a modern super steamer equipped with a superheater for more efficiency and reliability. But the diesel still took it's turn!
I’m a new subscriber
What’s the status of 1309 now? Are they still doing test runs?
N&W hooter whistle came back from the 50s. But different
As soon as 1309’s restoration is complete. It will be 734’s Restoration
THEY DIDN'T!! I...I didn't know this was even a thing...so they finally brought another mallet steamer into the mix...noice.
FANTASTIC !!!!
Nothing like steam!
I am extremely happy that they left the 1309 coal burning!
I’ve heard mouse squeaks on EBT 17 worse than 1309s squeaky braking system
Its alive ITS ALIVEEEE
Hope none of the Boyz caught the flu, with that rain coming down like that...
I won't be to surprised if that diesel locomotive blows up from constantly towing that behemoth
Too bad she will only run 10-15 mph on the mainline.
Nice watermark!!!
