@@michaelplatts8052 British steam locomotives look more interesting with the venting of steam out towards the front of the engine. This H-6 appears to have steam purge vents around the smoke box door on the front of the engine. This is likely done to give a more visible depiction of what is going on with the locomotive rather than place them in a less conspicuous location. Steam locomotives can be very explosive. That’s one of the reasons they’re so expensive to maintain and require boiler disassembly inspections after a certain amount of use to be deemed safe.

When my kids were still small, we paid a visit to the B+O Railroad Museum for the first time, parking in the shadow of the hulking rusted mass of 1309. Took a bunch of photos with her in the background with our friends holding the kids. Quite impressive, even in its dilapidated condition back then. I imagined at the time, what stories she could tell, what places she'd seen, as she sat there on the display track. Now 8 years later, its amazing to see her story continue and that my kids, now more grown up, might actually get to ride behind her! Quite a testament to the women and men who made this happen, and a testament to resurrecting the spark that was always there, even on the cold December day 8 years ago.

And where are all the people complaining that this was a futile effort, that it could never be finished, a waste of time...
As for all the talk about 'leaking steam', I have a few explanations for that.
    1: It's raining on a hot locomotive.
2: This is the first time it's been under steam, the piston rod and valve rod packing hasn't worn in yet.
3: The flexible joints in the cylinder feed pipes are cold, and once they get up to operating temperature they'll seal up.
4: The cylinder cocks are open.
You can see by the end of the video the leakage has mostly stopped. Even though they've done hydrostatic and live-fire testing of the boiler, you'll still find a few little leaks here and there in the associated piping when you actually run it.

I hope people don't think I was dumping on people's hard work. I was merely inquisitive about appearance of excess steam and unusual noise. The restoration of a steam loc is a Herculean effort of time and money. As a little kid I saw the last of the steamers at work in the CNR railyards close to my home. I greatly admire the Americans who have put so much effort into these restorations. Wish we had some close to home here in Ontario Canada. good luck.

@@MyMrkeys I don't mean anything against you. Just that there have been a number of people complaining about how long this project was taking, how much money it cost (and how the cost kept going up as they found new things to be fixed), complaining that the museum was incompetent and that funding should have gone to other projects, and so on. Some people aren't happy if they're not complaining. While I haven't had much experience with these things myself (though I have shoveled coal in a two-truck Heisler), I hope to volunteer at the Illinois Railway Museum near me. Just have to decide which department I'll work with.
